New Experiences in the World of Apartment Dwelling
 

So I've encountered a new and wonderful experience today; the turnover. You see, one of the ways apartments justify gouging you for money is by presenting a freshly cleaned, maintained, and painted room for you when you move in. Granted the cleaning is half-assed, the maintanence is sloppy, and the paint is more on the rug than on the wall, but it's there.

So my roommate moved out, and they're turning the apartment over for him. What this generally means is that they wake you up 3-5 times in the period of a week (twice to check the apartment, and then painting, cleaning, and maintanence).

So now it's 9:00 AM, and I didn't get any sleep until 5:00 last night because of a headache and other associated problems. My apartment is full of people who "No Speak English", and the fumes are spreading like death. I can only hope they don't paint anything that isn't a wall (given the speed at which they paint, this is DEFINITELY a valid concern).

And it's only day one.

Not really on topic, but I will never live in an apartment again. Having people above, beneath and nect to you sucks since you can hear damn well everything.

I will never live in a home that is connected to someone else's again. Its just too much of a pain in the ass.

It's weird. Living in the dorms is great because you're so close to your friends, and the hijinx that result are hilarious. Living in an apartment is like all of the closeness with none of the friendship.

I know what you mean. Having your neigbours' fuck-antics when you are trying to sleep in your ears or getting screamed at because you walked too loudly sucks.

The atmosphere in a dorm is something completely different. A dorm has rooms. It feels like you are all living under the same roof but only in different rooms. Apartments feel, well, apart.

Back when I lived in apartments, the only friends I had among my neighbors didn't share walls with me. There's something about hearing what people sound like in the bathroom that sort of gets in the way of really making friends with them.

There's WAY more neighborliness in my current neighborhood--a row of single-family houses--than there ever was in any apartment building I ever lived in.

Yeah the dorms were fun, but overall, I'd rather be in an apartment.

Fortunately I'm good friends with my neighbors, and move-in means I'll have plenty of new ones around August 15th. Then again I can't say I like waking up to the rhythmic squeeking of my friend upstairs, but at least she's cute.

What I meant was that apartments make you feel like you should be apart.

And the single row is probably more fun since there are a lot less adjoining walls :p

In the era of cheap-arse digital cameras, always take a zillion pictures any time you rent or lease anything that can be damaged. When I rent a car, I go around taking closeups of every scratch and ding before I pull off the lot so I don't get hit with the bill. Their little forms are too vague.

I'd do the same with an apartment if I was still in the renting stage.

I am living on the third floor of a house, each floor its own residence. I am tired of dorms and sharing a room, so this was a nice change, and the place is beautiful. And since I am on the top, I dont have anyone walking above. Sucks to be below!

Wow, you guys must live in some bad apartment buildings. In the one I live in, the only time I hear any of my neighbors is when I'm in the bathroom, where there's a vent that connects to the apartment directly below mine. Sometimes I hear them yelling at each other....but that's pretty much it.

....I guess that's what you get when you live in an apartment worth 5k a month...unfortunately, living here requires roomates which can be equally annoying.

This is rediculous. Over the last few days, I've had people come in TWICE at around 8:30 PM. One set of people were here to clean the apartment, and another was this poor guy who was supposed to be painting. This was after I talked to the Courtyards people this morning...

I'm paying $640 a month for this?

At least the landlord cares about maintenance.

I had a landlord at one place take three days to have a deadbolt installed after my place was broken into.

This is pretty much what I'll be moving into, except we got the middle floor. I'm definently looking forward to it. I think the multi-level house is much better than traditional apartment housing for the reasons listed above. Although I'm sure we'll run into all kinds of interesting dilemma's anyway. :p

I did the apartment thing once and hopefully never again. I have excellent hearing and it was like living in one big house with assholes all around making noise and yelling.

I quickly moved to a Duplex and built a house while there. I am fortunate to be living in an area where housing is at least affordable. My house payment is cheaper than most of the rent rates that I have seen quoted here.

i must be lucky, i'm in an apartment with three working girls and i never hear anything. Heck, i'm always worried if i keep them awake or if i disturb them. I never hear anyone upstairs above us, and my adjoining wall roommate is single, so no squeaking bed symphony...I've only had one chica over and this bed doesn't squeak, so it's been fairly nice..
but yeah, when i moved in, they had just signed a new lease, so everything was being repainted, then it was 5 days wtih the floors being resurfaced/shellacked...

it's not a bad existence, more like a dormroom for me, just a small room adjoining the bathroom and a shared kitchen/living room. I can live here, just not "live" here..

for $750 a month in UWS of manhattan, i'm pretty happy
