Let it go the guy is a "Fuckin Jag-off" fighting would have probably resulted in two things, One bodily injury no matter how good you whipped his ass or took a ass whipping it hurts in the morning. Two JAIL, Jail sucks. Probably got his ass whipped any way when he got home by his wife for makeing a sceen in public like that! If she let it go then thats two more assholes in the world!

Years ago, me and a friend where walking up the local high street, running some errands etc. My buddy needed to use the ATM, and one of the local teenage "we hang out here gang" members decided to use my buddy as a leaning pole.

My friend was trying to get his money out of the atm, while telling this idiot to disapear, but wasnt having any sucess. The teen was getting more and more rowdy, and smashed a bottle of wine he was drinking from on the wall and lunged for my buddy.

With one quick pop, my friend knocked him to the floor, and then turned to one of the idiots groupies, who attempted to take a lunge at my friend, and proceded to knock him to lay next to the first guy.

There was a ROAR of cheers and clapping from people shopping and coming out of buildings, because these youths have really become a nasty problem in that town.

It was like a scene from a movie. I was real proud of my friend for standing up. He was getting thanked all day too.

In my fantasy world I would have said "allow me to apologize" and then turned to his wife and said "madam, I am truely sorry that you had to be embarassed in public like this by your raging asshole of a husband." Then he would have taken a swing at me, I would have caught his fist with my left hand, then knocked him out with a right cross to the jaw, and gone back to the line to the applause of the crowd.

In reality I probably would have done exactly what you did, stood there dumbfounded and 20 minutes later gotten really pissed off and spent the rest of the night thinking of witty comebacks that I should have used.

I'd only fight in that situation if he was:

a) insulting my girlfriend, or anything where you need to stand up for whats right

b) threatening my personal safety with his actions...

I don't think trying to show off for his wife is threatening enough to fight... but thats just me

Look at it this way: if you would have fought, you would have probably kicked his ass and injured him. Injuring people brings about legal consequences, so it was a good thing that you let this piece of garbage go about his miserable existence.

I probably would have reacted the same way you did. It amazes me that people walk around just ready to fight. The way this guy reacted would have startled me too, and I would have trouble making a decision. I hope if it ever comes down to it, I won't hesitate.

I am a big fan of witty retorts. Something along the line of " Oh, I thought that was your mom, aren't you out past your curfew, young man?" Then when you are assaulted you can really make it stick. It is hard to make a shove stick when there are not any physical symptoms. I am about 50/50 with the witty comebacks, though. Sometimes I can think of them, and sometimes I just stand there and take it. They do not work so well if they do not have the appropriate wit. Yelling "Ungh......Stupidhead!!!" just does not have the right effect. They just think you are slow. (Trust me.) Keep a couple ready just in case. Try "you know what they say about people with small hands, right?" or "Isn't tonight group night?" or something that applys to people in a general sense.

If at all possible, turn around and walk off. Keep in mind that nobody is so tough, or mean, that somewhere there isn't someone tougher, and meaner...just laying for him.

here's one for you, a recent event near my hometown. two assholes roadraging and cutting eachother off on the freeway. they come to the light on the freeway offramp. asshole number 1 gets out of his car, and starts yelling at asshole number 2 and kicking his tires and whatnot. Asshole number 2 gets out of his car and STABS asshole number 1, asshole number 1 pulls out his gun and shoots asshole number 2. neither are dead, both are in the hospital, and have alot of explaining to do.
