Car bomb explodes in Tenessee
I found it intersting that authorities said "there is no reason to suspect terrorism".
What exactly is the definition they are using, that this does not meet the criteria? One Killed As Car Explodes at Tenn. Hotel One Killed After Vehicle Explodes at Largest Hotel in Nashville, Tenn.; Homemade Bomb Suspected The Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. July 21, 2004 — A sport utility vehicle exploded in a parking lot at Nashville's largest hotel, killing one male inside, and authorities said they suspected a homemade bomb was involved. The explosion occurred late Tuesday about a half-mile from the main entrance of Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center, and about 200 feet from a day care center, which was closed, said Jim Cavanaugh of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Police said the blast was felt miles away, and it left nothing but a shell of the SUV. Investigators from the federal Joint Terrorism Task Force were at the scene, but FBI agent Doug Riggin said there was no reason to suspect terrorism. Cavanaugh said the cause hadn't yet been determined but investigators suspect a homemade bomb. "It could have been homicide or suicide or the guy may have just blown himself up," police Homicide Detective Brad Putnam said. Cavanaugh said authorities were trying to trace the SUV's license plates to identify the victim. The Gaylord Opryland has 2,881 rooms. The Grand Ole Opry's theater is on the hotel grounds and there is an adjacent shopping mall. "We haven't got a lot of calls from guests, but we are addressing any concerns they may have," hotel spokeswoman Karen Hunter-Lowery said. http://abcnews.go.com/wire/US/ap20040721_1162.html Mind you, I am by no means terrified, but unless there is something missing from the story.....It smells like terrorism to me. Just not a very good job of it. |
Now are we talking domestic terrorism, or is Tennessee now a hotbed of activity for Al Quaida (or however it's spelled)
The fact that it was so close to a day care center, would be a little unnerving for residents of that area, had the day care center been open... |
I don't know...could be that the guy had a grudge against his girlfriend, who was staying at the hotel. For me, terrorism = violent targeting of civilians for political aims, and until we find out what exactly the guy's motives were, this hardly seems like terrorism.
|
terrorism = the use of fear/terror to intimidate people or governments
As it looks here the bomb was just used to kill one main person. Not to intimidate others. |
I don't know about that, if a bomb went off in front of a hotel I was staying at, not sure terrified is the right word, but I'd be sure thinking it was high time to go home...
|
Why is that more terrifying than if the person was shot, stabed, poisoned, ran over, beat with a bat, ect...? Its just another way to die.
|
Anyone gets murdered in a place I am staying, I am going to think twice about staying there...
However, something blowing up is different than someone getting stabbed or shot, especially if it's not an accident. |
Do you know why a bomb is a more terrifying way to die?
If the guy died any other way we probably wouldn't have known he ever lived. |
My opinion is that it is more terrifying because it threatens a larger group of people than a simple stabbing. A bomb can destroy a whole hotel while a stabbing, gun fight, etc are less likely to destroy the building.
|
Wow, that guy must have been lost.
"Do you know if there's a bus route that will drop me off in Northern Ireland?" |
Mafia! Tennessee is the new mafia capital of the world didn't you guys know that?
I've stayed at that hotel before and it's beautiful but I guess that's kinda off topic. I think It'd be pretty easy to rule out terrorism when a car blows up in the middle of a parking lot and doesn't kill anyone except the driver. It seems like it was homicide, but possibly suicide. |
Relax. It's fucking tennesee.
Shit. When I was there people blew shit up for fun. You'd go to the gun shop and buy a few pounds of gun powder or black powder and make bombs and launch old garbage cans in a field or blast boulders out of the riverbank just to see if you could. |
Two words: Mob hit.

we're all part of the same global community. |
Not sure if I'm ready to be committed to the Tilted Paranoia section or not, but I have a strong suspicion that there have been other terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11. They just aren't classified as such and aren't labeled as such by the media.
Is this an example of this? I don't think so but you never know. After all, what's the best way to keep terrorists from their goal of spreading fear? That's right boys and girls, don't let anyone know about it. |

Unless you can point at the bits and pieces and say he had evil intent, he's just another dumbshit making bombs for personal use. If the FBI or BATF turn up enough molecules to something to say otherwise, then by all means, he got what he deserved and let's see if he had accomplices and then impale them all on fat, blunt wooden poles, well greased with bacon drippings. I work in NYC in offices above the Century 21 store on Cortland street, and have for the the last 4 years, so don't go all "global community" with me. Take that One-World, "I'd Love to teach the World to Sing" crap and park it in your garage. I'm an American. |

I too live in NYC and have for many years before 9/11. But let's put this into perspective. If you don't pay attention to what's outside of your "day to day" and suddenly something or someone blindsides you because you weren't paying attention, it merits at least being waking up and being vigilant and paying attention to other situations. While it may not affect you the same ways that it has affected me and my friends and collegues, doesn't mean that I'm "touchy" compared to you. It just means I deal with things differently than you. I have an office in Nashville so to me, this affects my coworkers in some way I'm sure of it. |
I doubt it. Not if they grew up in TN.
The dead clod is just another Darwin candidate until proven otherwise. |
Maybe it was a mob hit? did that ever occur to anyone?

I mean I'm sure everyone here who even has the slightest idea who I am is tired of hearing me bitch, but I get tired of defending the South all the time. This is supposed to be a community where we're all protected from being offended. No other subgroup of humanity is riddled with ignorant offensive barbs at the TFP quite like the South is. I don't understand what makes it OK to do that. I mean the caption below the link for the Southern forum says it's "The Land of the Missing Teeth." I'm Southern, I'm a TFP'er and it offends me. I wish it would just stop. |
I live in Tennessee, and frankly, I don't give a shit what people from other regions of the U.S., think of the south, its their ignorance, not ours.
I just wish the bomb was closer to that goddamned Opry Mills Shopping Mall. I'm still pissed off that they closed Opryland (an amusement park) to build a damned mall. Man, Opryland had the coolest shit ever on Halloween. |
Crow, relax.
No, I'm suggesting that the person built a device and was off about about to show it off to his buddies and blew himself up. You must live in the city, huh? If you lived in a rural area, you'da understood. Blowing shit up is fun. Did you never play with fireworks? Have you never made the big pilgramage to West Memphis and gone home with a trunk fulla m-80s and bottle rockets? Geeze, chill out. Pop a couple valiuim and call me in the morning. Omega, malls are a blight on society. I agree with 100%. |
