a dog proof ball?

I have a 9 month German Shepherd pup that chews through every ball we have ever given her in no time. We got her a new tenisball and she had a hole in it the third time I threw it to here. Is there anyone else who had this problem, and if you found a way to solve the problem what is it? Is there a ball my dog can't chew through in 5 minutes?

Absolutely! Head to your local PetsMart and shop around a little bit. They have tennis-ball-looking balls that are way tougher and are meant to stand up to doggy teeth.

Yep...and I found "Ivan's" in the pet department of a grocery store. Don't remember the brand, but it's white, about the size of a tennis ball, and runs about $4.00. Ivan used to swallow two tennis balls every morning with a glass of water...now he's pissed that he can't eat this one, but my ball bill has dropped to almost nothing. One other note, there is no green string to crap out every few days!

http://www.kongcompany.com/ Makes pet toys that are virtually indestructable. My dog has only chewed thru them one time, and it was when we kept filling it with peanutbutter and letting her go to town. They make balls now I think, I'm not sure.

Yeah Kong Company makes some good stuff. Not indistructable balls mind you, but your dog will definately have to work on it a while.

Kong is the way although nothing is dog proof. Nothing.

Kongs are pretty close.

kong is good.

the kong toys i have had for my husky have long outlasted his erratic attention span.

he prefers stuffed toys that squeak.
the squeaky thing seems to be understood as a little plastic soul. he really likes pulling it out.
i have little collections of stuffed toy limbs around my apartment from time to time.
the dismemberment process seems to be the fun.

My dog loves this ball from Petsmart. He can bite it, collapse it, you can kick it, and the handle is big enough for him to carry. It weighs about a pound, and he really seems to like the big, full toy that is a real target.

Hehe, my dog used to have that same ball pocon. Used to. After about a year there is between 1/8th and 1/4 of it left. He'll sit down with it and tear off peices, Chew them like gum, then either spit em out or swallow them. The handle was totally gone within the first month.

As for the problem at hand, i've yet to find a toy the dog wont destroy, if he plays with it. Luckily, the neighbor kids are always throwing balls over, so we have a huge collection of popped and shredded basketballs, soccerballs, tennis balls, rubber balls, etc. Doesnt solve the problem of him not destroying them, but at least we dont have to keep buying them.

kepage23...found "Ivan's" indestructable ball last night, under the couch as usual. Anyway if you haven't located one yet, it's a "Hartz", and tough as hell.

that's what my familiy does with our dogs. it's so fun to watch them lick the peanut butter out of the kong. :-) our last dog used to go pick up his kong and bring it to us and then drop it at our feet whenever he wanted us to put peanut butter in it. our new dog hasn't gotten used to our family yet though, so we haven't been able to do the same with him.

Damn. I didnt know there was such a market in this! We always just kept a stash of normal old tennis balls around for the dog to chew. Sounds like a good idea though if your dog likes chewing.

Chingal0 08-05-2004 12:08 PM

Tennis balls work if you want to replace them everday. That is, if your dog is a chewer. And yea, Kong's are indestructible, but damn near close. A friend of mine has a pit bull and it takes him about 3-5 months to destroy his Kong ball, whereas a tennis ball would be gone in .5 seconds.

I used to work at petsmart and had to answer this question millions of times, and each time i have taken them to the Kongs. There are also black Kongs, those are for stronger chewers. There are lots of different types of kongs too, regular balls to bones you can stuff treats into and various things. I did see Kongs come back though, in huge chuncks, but that was rarely...

I have a rottie/blue heeler who likes to prove the indestructible toy makers wrong. I just stick with giving him HUGE rawhide bones that he knaws through in a day (two if i'm lucky). With balls, I just grab any tennis balls I see laying around nearby tennis courts. I have an old soccer ball that he's destroyed, but even though it barely holds its shape it's his favorite.

We got a kong for our Labrador like 10 years ago, it's still bouncin around. You can't break those things..
