Breakfast of champions

I’ve noticed that it is no so unusual to see people buying alcohol at convenience stores in the morning.

I’ve always felt that it is pretty hard to get ahead in this world just working hard and being clean and sober. I can’t comprehend what thought process is involved in starting your day off with a mind altering substance on a daily basis.

I’ve caught people working for me who had to have a joint to get “motivated” to work. (You’re fired!)

(Is this a part of a larger picture of where we, as a nation, are headed?)

So...how normal is it, for you, to start your day off with something more motivating than coffee or a caffeine drink?

Or...do you see this occurring in YOUR everyday life? Do you see people working under the influence of something on a regular basis?

ubertuber 07-15-2004 06:44 PM

I am in an unusual situation, being a performing artist... I'll tell you that there are people that I have known that were stoned more than sober - while performing, in class, etc... It seems that this has been more common in the last two years or so, but I don't know if that is just because I am more aware of it. And by the way, I am talking about classical music, not rock or jazz, which I have seen to be even worse!

mrsandman 07-15-2004 06:49 PM

I think I can KIND of comprehend getting your mind in a different
state 'artistically". But isn't it difficult to maintain a level of excellence in performing? Or does it depend on what substance you are using?

ubertuber 07-15-2004 06:59 PM

I think performing (at least classically, since that is all I know) requires all of your concentration and focus - but in an "open" manner, meaning you are alert, mentally nimble, aware of everything around you, and extremely reactive to what's around you. For me, this can only mean playing clear.

As for your second question, I see people using pot more than anything else around me. I think the jazzers go more for alcohol, but that is probably environmental, since they often work in bars and nightclubs (and are sometimes partially paid with an open bar).

Consider also that not everyone works 9 - 5- for many years I worked the graveyard shift, where i'd come in to work at 9 or 10 in the evening and get home at 7am. At 7am, that's my dinner time, so I didn't want eggs, I wanted a burger and a beer - strange at 7am but it was what i wanted.

Past jobs I've held, people going out for a few beers at lunch was nothing, I had an assignment that kept me inthe UK for about 6 months, my contacts would go to the pub every day for lunch and toss back a few Guinnesses (I did it once and was exhausted the rest of the day)

It's certainly not a new phenomon that people do this..

kurty[B] 07-15-2004 07:27 PM

I used to work a 7 PM to 7 AM job. So, on our last day of the week a bunch of us would go to a nearby pub that opened at 7 AM (mainly for the sole purpose of our business), and would get slammed.

It was a very simple job, and quite a few people (me included sometimes) would get extremely high and go do it. I knew quite a few people who's goal in life seemed to be to maintain a 24/7 inebriated state.

I don't know if that stops them from smoking out, too. The jazz musicians I used to hang around with would be stoned nearly every waking hour. What's more disturbing for me is that the sailing team likes to sail while high on coke. That can't be safe.

well i cant say i have never gone into work drunk... but it sucks. i cant get anything done. i prefer to drink when im able to enjoy it.

cartmen34 07-16-2004 06:44 AM

The only thing that gets me going in the morning is a single serve Orange Juice.

Just finished my OJ for the day. Ahhhhhh. superior.

And I don't drink with the intention of getting drunk, so no, I cannot see how people can start their day with a shot or two of whatever it is they drink.

I just realized how wholesome I sound....ick.

ARTelevision 07-16-2004 07:39 AM

When I was teaching at the college-level, I was very aware of the drinkers and stoners in my morning classes who were already at it...

I used to work with guys who would drink and get FUBAR and use this type of equipment. These are garment cutting machines with a 10" to 22" blade that cuts through 11" of denim fabric like it was soft butter.

I was always amazed that they never lopped off a finger.

In younger days, and long ago, I worked closely with cops. I’ve heard many a hair-raising tale from some of the “boys in blue” who were under the influence of mind altering substances when involved in car chases, or, man with a gun, etc…(coping with the dangers of the ghetto in their own way.) Are there any current stories involving dangerous jobs mixed with drugs?

Myself, I have had only one job that I could do while stoned: D. J. But that wasn't necessarily dangerous… unless I played Polka music.

flamingdog 07-16-2004 12:10 PM

I'm pretty much a daily stoner, but the one thing I never do is smoke up before I go into work. It would just be so counter-productive, it wouldn't help anything.

water_boy1999 07-16-2004 12:27 PM

Not for me, thanks. That is what after work hours are for. I am a daily pot smoker but would never and have never been inebriated before going to work.

If I had a fellow co-worker who I knew was drunk or stoned, I would have a problem, one that would see itself appear before their bosses. I just won't put up with that shit.

The_wall 07-16-2004 12:27 PM

I work in a kitchen, about half the people who work in the kitchen smoke pot, most of them do smoke at work. I'm one of those people. Its not that we can't get through work without it, but some days it just helps so much to get through the day w/o going balistic. But man oh man is it great working in a kitchen in that situation =)

kurty[B] 07-16-2004 12:30 PM

one of my past co-workers, was in the Army Rangers as a radio operator long ago... Talk about some interesting consuming mass quantities of hallucinogens while on duty stories. i don't like sharing, because I imagine I can't do any of them "justice".

Good for cutting denim, huh? Maybe I could lose some weight with one!

In the early 1980's, I worked my way through college as a janitor, cleaning the same classrooms by night that I studied in by day. My boss, Harvey, simply could not function unless he was drunk or high. He literally refused to leave the house until he had a few drinks or lines.

There have always been people dependent on mood-altering substances to live some semblence of a normal life. It's not a recent thing.

tropple 07-16-2004 02:46 PM

Hey, just remember that 9-5 is not absolute.

When I worked 11pm to 7 am in the Navy, I used to stop by a bar that opened at 6am. It was a great place and there were always other mid-shift people stopping in for dinner and a beer. It's no different than a day-job person stoppnig off.

The owner used to tape Monday Night football and show them on Tuesday morning, commercials and all. It was a blast.

TM875 07-16-2004 02:51 PM

Yea, I work either 10pm - 6:30 or in the area of 3am - 11:30. I need to find a place to stop off for my early morning dinner / breakfast break.

Polyphobic 07-17-2004 05:33 AM

In the past I used to come to work stoned or on LSD. It's much easier to do that working at a fast food joint. At my current job I would never think of it. Office work at my job involves talking face to face with my coworkers who are generally more educated than the fast food job. Plus, having quite everything (except for the occasional drink) doesn't help.
