Ever feel like laughing and killing yourself at the same time?

I seriously cannot stop laughing at this.. it's hilarious. At the same time, every time I lookat #3, I feel like hurling myself off a cliff.

I could get deep about how the industrialization of the world is killing nature. Or how modern civilization corrupts innocent lives. Or how in this fast world, you're forced to grow up quickly or else get.. swallowed up... by... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

MrFlux 06-14-2004 11:15 PM

I giggled...

loudly and uncontrollably.

amonkie 06-14-2004 11:21 PM

Poor cute little duckies ... :(

meepa 06-14-2004 11:24 PM

A tiny part of me laughed... Most of me felt so bad though :(

gondath 06-14-2004 11:48 PM

This is a job for duckling search and rescue.

KellyC 06-14-2004 11:50 PM

any chance that they'll live?

Stare At The Sun 06-14-2004 11:55 PM

Not to be a party pooper...but looks really photochopped...still very funny either way!

noahfor 06-14-2004 11:58 PM

I doubt they fell in. I mean they can step over the holes.

Think of all the decomposing bodies of baby animals floating around in the sewers. Makes me laugh every time.

ForgottenKnight 06-15-2004 12:59 AM

I'll bet the duckling in the third picture is the last one to cross and that the others are safely out of the sight of the camera.

Part of me wanted to laugh. Part of me felt bad. I was torn in two doing both at once.

World's King 06-15-2004 01:57 AM

Pic #2:
the little duck under the mommy looks a bit odd.

Halx 06-15-2004 02:23 AM

that would be because it's fuzzy

SecretMethod70 06-15-2004 04:00 AM

*sigh* Why do people insist *everything* is photoshopped these days. (And, no, the correct answer is not that everything is)

Anyways, yeah, I hate to admit it but I chuckled...then I realized I was going to Hell for laughing at the poor ducks :( :p

Laugh all you want guys, without feeling guilty. It's DEFINITELY chopped. First off, note the car in pics 2 and 3. It's moved. That means the engine is running. How many ducks do you know that will keep calmly walking near a running car that's moving? They ALWAYS walk away from the car.

Second, look at the adult's feet in pic2. They did a nice job, but you can see that the feet don't belong there. That telltale blurring around the toes when everything else is sharp gives it away.

The shine on the exhaust pipe in #3 looks a bit off to me as well. There's 6 chicks in the first photo, and 5 in the second. The mother isn't that far ahead that a chick could have fallen down already, I think.

Still, it's horrible but funny at the same time.

I disagree about the car moving. The second picture is lower and more to the right than the first picture. Since it's lower, you don't see the bumper. Since it's farther to the right, the exhaust is in the frame. The exhaust on my pickup truck doesn't come off the back, it comes off the right side, about 2 feet forward of the bumper.

haze11979 06-15-2004 05:41 AM

Definitely faked...where's the duck in the super-shiny bumper? Why does the bumper turn into an exhaust pipe? Just look at the baby ducks. They don't match the environment.

The bumper is reflecting the left side of the grate, the duck is on the right. The right side of the grate is past the bumper, and wouldn't be reflected.

I already explained the bumper/exhaust question. (see reply above)

I guess I'm likely to believe this because I've fished ducklings out of a sewer grate before.

Cervantes 06-15-2004 07:13 AM

Evolution/development is harsh but sometimes funny. It's a bit funny and a bit sad.

I must admit i chuckled while feeling sorry for the ducklings, the mother looks so suprised.. It is pretty sad.

rainheart 06-15-2004 08:38 AM

I laughed hard..... and then I felt like crying.

I hope its photoshopped.

Never heard of fishing from a sewer grate, but to each his own.

I am on the fence about this one. Totally hilarious, but looks a wee bit doctored up. Funny as all hell though.

Halx 06-15-2004 09:11 AM

You guys keep fooling yourselves into thinking it's photoshopped to make you feel better about it.. fine. I understand. Sometimes it's just too difficult to rationally grasp.

StormBerlin 06-15-2004 09:41 AM

I think the duckies are too big to fit through those grates. Unless they wiggled a bit. I think it's fake. And yes Halx, thinking it's photoshopped makes me feel better.

saut 06-15-2004 09:47 AM

These particular photographs may or may not be altered, but I remember reading an article (probably on fark) a few weeks ago about some ducklings falling into a storm drain. I believe they were rescued.

fhqwhgads 06-15-2004 10:01 AM

Do a google on ducklings storm grate.

It happens all the time.

Fremen 06-15-2004 10:11 AM

For some reason I don't feel bad.
Maybe I should feel bad about that.

T.U.B. 06-15-2004 10:52 AM

Not the same ducks, but feels better to know some of them get saved...

Ducks and geese walk with no regard to cars all the time-ever drive through a park full of them? I do and they look at the cars like we've ransacked their home, but they keep walking. Blurring happens when things move, like duck feet or the cameraman.
I tried to find it in Snopes, but no luck there-however, there have been some duck-from-the sewergrate pictures posted elsewhere, so in all probability this is pretty accurate. Like Hal, I knows my Photoshop and that isn't a paste-up;-the shadows can't be that well blended into the pavement no matter how hard one tries-paste-ups are very hard to do when done well and there would still be errors-those things you've pointed out are not errors.(To be sure, though, magnify the picture by hitting control + about 6 or seven times and look for obvious outlines.)
It's the mother duck looking back, like WTF? that made me giggle.

denim 06-15-2004 12:24 PM

So, if the ducklings fell in, did anyone try to save them?

canuckguy 06-15-2004 02:39 PM

i hunt so the duck/dying really does not matter to, nor to I think that every image i see is photoshopped but I think this one is, the ducks are just to perfectly positioned. still sad to see.

That's interesting. All the ducks and geese I've come across tend to get out of the way when anything larger than themselves approaches.

Quote:

Well camera movement would have blurred the whole picture. And the feet aren't totally blurred, just the edges around the bottom - so unless the ducks somehow can move only the bottom of their feet while the rest of the foot stays still. . .that doesn't explain this photo.

Halx 06-15-2004 03:23 PM

there is another picture to this set.. it's actually taken first in the sequence:

http://flippedcracker.net/photos/alb...cks1.sized.jpg

The photographer apprently takes credit for taking the pictures, but offers no explanation yet.

You skeptics.. bleh.

Xell101 06-15-2004 04:17 PM

Feeling bad, but laughing anyway.

As for the authenticity, it isn't photoshopped and that was probably the last duckling, ducks aren't known for being demons of effeciency with their movements, it probably just looking back, not for lost ducklings.

zxello 06-15-2004 04:18 PM

http://www.myidols.com/duck2.jpg

look at the bumper, no reflection, but you can see most of the grate.....

Xell101 06-15-2004 04:24 PM

It looks to be reflecting the other side of the grate. If it was reflecting the side nearest it you'd be able to see a lot more grate.

Again, you're looking at the far side of the grate in that reflection, not the right side where the ducks are. Where the ducks are is too far right for the convex surface to reflect it.

Munku 06-15-2004 06:29 PM

THe tail pipe has no ducks in it's reflection.

Stiltzkin 06-16-2004 02:06 AM

I have minimal photoshopping experience and I still didn't think for a second that these pics were real. Whoever chopped this just did a good job.

SlackrJon 06-16-2004 08:46 PM

I laughed, We should all be wondering about the sick bastard that took the pictures of the ducks falling and didnt do anything to help. He's totaly goin to hell.

Eclipse26 06-16-2004 09:02 PM

Awww...fake or real that is so sick and wrong. Poor ducklings.

But, I still laughed. Straight to hell for me.

SpikeQX99 06-16-2004 09:14 PM

It's not chopped at all, I read the article sometime last week I think it was about these ducklings that fell in the sewer drains, and were swimming around and stuff, and a bunch of people helped out and got all the ducks out of the drains and on their way to more adventures!

Besides, it's not like a duck is gonna drown in a sewer you know? They're kinda built for floating in the water right????

Funny on one hand, but kinda sad on the other...

an interesting study in the human animal though, beings that people naturally believe that baby ducks are funny no matter what they do, but then they fall in the sewer and it's funny for a little while, then it's like "holy shit man!!! we gotta do something for the little duckies!!!!"

Er, you're not taking it far enough. Most sewer systems don't drain directly into a body of water. They go through a water treatment plant first. And before that, they likely get rather large, and go through booster pumps...

miggity99 06-17-2004 06:29 AM

The ducks are ok!

Five ducklings rescued from sewer

By KATE GARSOMBKE
For the Daily Tribune
STEVENS POINT - It was a beautiful day - the sun was shining, the birds were singing. Strangers smiled and greeted each other as they passed on the sidewalk.

But as people strolled Friday along downtown's Main Street, panicked quacks and peeps suddenly pierced the calmness. Something had gone wrong.

Brandi Roberts, owner and manager of Layla's Garden Deli, noticed that a mother duck had tried crossing Main Street with her ducklings. One by one, five ducklings fell through a storm sewer grate.

"I saw one of them fall, and the mom got scared and took off," she said.

Acting fast, Roberts picked up the phone and called for help.

Stevens Point firefighters and two Portage County Humane Society officers showed up shortly before 10 a.m. and began their daring rescue. A crowd of onlookers grew as firefighters removed a manhole cover and went below the street to fetch the ducklings.

The crew thought it had gathered up all of the chicks when they heard more frenzied peeping coming from the storm sewer.

Firefighters placed the captured ducklings in a pet carrier and lowered the cage into the storm sewer, hoping the other birds' cries would attract the lone chick. Once all of the ducklings were rescued, humane officers took them and went in search of their mother.

Ducks lost downtown aren't a rare occurrence. Many are just trying to get to Pfiffner Pioneer Park, where there is water, said Debbie Duernberger, a humane officer.

Duernberger and humane officer Jenny Stormoen went to the park and spotted a mother duck swimming with two ducklings. They figured this was the ducklings' mother.

"When we first opened up the cage, she came in closer and kept looking at them," Duernberger said. "As soon as she heard chirping, she came right over. She was very happy."
Wisconsin Rapids Daily

quadro2000 06-17-2004 06:39 AM

Looking at those pictures breaks my heart. Even if they're okay.

denim 06-17-2004 07:46 AM

Imagine how'd you feel if you were leading your kids across the street, and some undetectable predetor got them w/o you even noticing it happend. That's scarey indeed. You might be next. No surprise the mother duck took off.

maleficent 07-16-2004 04:27 AM

I saw this this story in a magazine tonite - -was really sweet -- nice to know the duckies were safe....

It was different version of the story, that only two of the ducklings fell, and it was a not the firedepartment that did the rescuing...

I know you guys are all happy laughing at the torment of a mother duck, but it's a 'shop, or simply that the final picture is the last duck walking safely away and the mother examining the sewer.

Look how big the birds are in comparison to the grate openings.. you'd have to actually stuff them through.

ARTelevision 07-16-2004 07:11 PM

I just like the title of this thread!

I smile everytime I scan this forum's thread listings and notice it...

xxSquirtxx 07-16-2004 09:28 PM

Awww. How sad.

But I did giggle a wee bit.

Destrox 08-19-2004 06:09 PM

What makes this even more funny, I have a t-shirt that is very similar to this.

Its got a momma duck, walking 4-5 baby ducks.. then a middle photo with them in the middle of a street (with the yellow line), and finally the third photo has only the momma duck and 2 babies.

Its cruel, but damn i love it.

glasscutter43 08-19-2004 06:39 PM

Ducklings fell through a grate in my town last spring. Two people walking by saw momma duck and heard the babies. Three guys from Home Depot armed with duck tape (sic) and some 1 x 2 rescued all the little duckies. Made the front page of the local paper.

merkerguitars 08-20-2004 09:31 PM
