heh, I quit smoking cigarettes a few weeks ago, and in my quest to not smoke cigs anymore, I wanna take up cigar smoking hahahah. seriously though, I do. I think if I have a couple cigars on the weekends when I'm drinking, that'll fill my smoking quota.

anyway, I'm checking out www.cigar.com right now, but was curious if any of you fine people have any input on this subject? thanks in advance!

I am not sure what the rules on posting sites are because I am a newbie. However, the single best site on the web for buying cigars is www.cigarbid.com. It is the ebay of cigars and the single best deals in existence. Never buy from a cigar shop when you can get boxes for under $100 here. And good brands like CAO, AVO, Gurkha, etc.

Also, if you are considering a relatively safe alternative to cigarette smoking, you may want to look at pipe smoking.

Now, this was off a pipe website but I've seen similar information in a small number of health journal articles that think to include pipes.

Macanudo mini cigars are awesome. Not much of a commitment, and they are very mild.

Just to clarify- they are saying breathing in concentrated smoke from burned leaves daily for 30 years does not adversely affect your health compared to breathing in normal air. Also, if you don't actually breathe in the smoke, it seems to have healing qualities, since these people that enjoy the rich deep taste of tabbaco in their mouths live longer than nonsmokers. Common sense is now reaching out and slapping you. :icare:

When I am sitting around drunk I love a good cigar. While my experience with cigars is limited, and my preferences may be different from yours, a good Churchill type Arturo Fuentes is at least worth a try.

Well, except that it's never that simple. For example, there may be a calming effect from pipe smoke consumption which outweighs any in-mouth-only smoke effects.

I'm a cigar smoker and for purchasing I like www.holts.com and www.jrcigars.com - prompt shipment and the cigars are always in good condition.

I just ordered some onyx reserve churchill's from www.lowcostcigars.com. tec I checked the price difference on both sites you posted and they're about 10 bucks more a box on those sites. But as you said, prompt shipment and good condition are huge factors. I asked for 2 day shipment so I expect them on Friday. I'll post back to this thread when I get them. Thanks again though, all great sites and all going on my favorites list!

choskins : That is fantastic. I smoke Jose L. Peidra Cazadores mostly, they are a cheap cigar, cuban, great taste but inconsistant rolling. I haven't ordered online yet, I mail order from a local cigar shop.

I built my own humidor and really enjoyed the experience, I will post pictures of it soon.

For a good cigar at reasonable prices I go for Honduran (no specific brand). I have yet to be unhappy...

Tobacco quality is more than just the seeds, there seems to be an effect from soil, climate, etc.

Most (not comfortable saying all) Hondurans are made from Cuban-seed tobacco. Plus the climate, etc is very close to Cuba so the cigar actually tastes similar to a Cuban (for a LOT less money)

Also, some of the best growers left Cuba and many ended up in Honduras.

holy cohiba choskins, that humidor is wicked. i have been struggling with doing something and you have inspired me. i have about 500 cigars, (200 cuban) and have them in various coolers with humidification devices since i moved a couple years ago.

but mike c, my only fear is that i have a few friends that got nailed by beetles and by keeping my cigars separate, i think i am escaping this.

i bought the super heavy duty largest ziploc bags and put a few boxes at a time in each bag with a humidification device full of 50% propelyne glyco and 50% water.

then i put all those bags in about four different large coleman coolers.

every couple of months i check the status of the cigars and fill the devices as needed.

i also have three small humidors at home and three at work with a rotating supply of different cigars.

one humidor at each place is strictly cuban, and the other ones are based on the size of the cigar.

Thanks cheeterbo! It's not hard once you get to it. It sounds like you are extremely cautious, which is good. However, I am a firm believer that so long as you maintain the humidity and temperature within the range and keep your 'gars locked in a humidor, you should never have a problem with beetles. When you stray out of the temperature range, you open yourself up to problems.

yeah I read that once you get above 80 degrees F, that's when the microscopic eggs of the tobacco beetle can hatch.

You can also make your own. Just get a cooler, get some wet Oasis, some of the liquid that goes in it, a container for it that can exchange air, and a humididty monitor from Radio Shack.

Being a pipe smoker I felt the need to check this out, and strangely, the actual report is quoted CORRECTLY- it then goes on to say that they are uncertain about the cause for this puzzling outcome- note however, that I am skeptical as the report dates from 1964, and there are other reports and studdies that show a higher mortality rate from pipe smokers- sorry for being off topic a bit, but it has provoked me to start digging for info......

Back now- and after an extensive search, the quote is right, but later studdies (about 40 years of them) show the conclusion reached by the smoking website you quote to be pure horseshit - in fact you get a much higher incidence of throat and mouth cancer, and an elevated risk over the general public of lung cancer (pipe second hand smoke may be worse than cig seconhand, and the smoker is exposed even if he does not inhale)- so in fact it is easier on the lungs, just as the average cigar smoke is, but worse on the mouth and throat- tracheotomies anyone?

Back in October the Treasury Department tightened the ban on Cuban Cigars and imposed some pretty harsh penalties for an American Citizen to even smoke a Cuban while traveling.

Yeah, pretty hard to enforce. but 10 years in the fed seems like a good enough deterrent to me.

so does anyone know any good sites to order cigars at that take orders for people under 21... i turn 21 in february... and want a couple cigars to celebrate... but all the sites ive found that have good deals only sell to people over 21...

I highly doubt there are harsh penalties for Americans that smoke cubans while traveling, heck everytime i go to Bermuda i bring back a few boxes of Cubans.
