Want a baby? Have sex!

London - A German couple who went to a fertility clinic after eight years of marriage have found out why they are still childless - they weren't having sex.

The University Clinic of Lubek said they had never heard of a case like it after examining the couple who went to see them last month for fertility tests.

Doctors subjected them to a series of examinations and found they were both apparently fertile, and should have had no trouble conceiving.

A clinic spokesperson said: "When we asked them how often they had had sex, they looked blank, and said: "What do you mean?".

"We are not talking retarded people here, but a couple who were brought up in a religious environment who were simply unaware, after eight years of marriage, of the physical requirements necessary to procreate."

The 30-year-old wife and her 36-year-old husband are now being given sex therapy lessons while the university clinic undertakes a study to try to find out if there are more couples with a similar lack of sex education.
Anyone else grow up this sheltered? I wasn't nearly this naive, but when I was younger and just learning about sexuality, my mother's ability to keep me sheltered from porn and other nonsense of the sort gave me a huge learning curve. Regardless, I've overcome that hurdle to become the massive sex god that I am today. :D

KellyC 05-17-2004 03:11 PM

looks like somebody are missing out....lots of catching up to do so too...

StormBerlin 05-17-2004 03:15 PM

So I wonder how the hell they were taught to have children? Just wish really hard?

k1ng 05-17-2004 03:32 PM

Even in strict house homes, kids learn about things from other kids, the media, asking questions, etc.. These people must have really been quarantined from the rest of the world.

la petite moi 05-17-2004 03:33 PM

Wow. They must have been VERY sheltered! I mean, they must have been homeschooled and never asked any questions!

rsl12 05-17-2004 03:33 PM

as great as this story is, i REALLY doubt it's true. usually people keep things like this confidential unless the patient agree. and these two don't sound like the type that would like people discussing their sex lives.

Xell101 05-17-2004 03:37 PM

Huh, when sheltered was read the word quarantine came to mind...wow.

theguyondacouch 05-17-2004 03:54 PM

Did any else think of that mad tv sketch?

water_boy1999 05-17-2004 03:56 PM

You mean there is no stork????

SecretMethod70 05-17-2004 03:58 PM

heh I just came here to post this. Looks like I was beaten.

Crazy stuff. Can't imagine how one could live life like that!

Halx 05-17-2004 04:00 PM

This is priceless and must be shown to every living person on the earth because of it's comedic value.

cchris 05-17-2004 04:02 PM

My missus reckons that I have been sheltered when it comes to cleaning the house.

It just gets done doesn't it?

saut 05-17-2004 04:27 PM

I thought sex was instinctive. Hmph.

wilbjammin 05-17-2004 05:06 PM

How were they trying to have children if not by sex?

Truly odd.

Redjake 05-17-2004 05:21 PM

He'd kill me if he knew I was mentioning this, but one of my friend's didn't know that babies came out of the vagina 'til he was 18 years old (senior in high school). He thought all babies were cut out via cesarian (sue me if it's spelled wrong) section.

la petite moi 05-17-2004 05:29 PM

Yeah Red, I thought that for a LONG time too.

Amethyst 05-17-2004 05:33 PM

I really have a hard time believing that this story is true. I don't think that anyone is that sheltered.

Laugh! 05-17-2004 05:38 PM

Joseph Heller wrote about something similar to that in Catch-22, but I thought he was just joking. Sheesh.

Halx 05-17-2004 05:50 PM

I'd believe it.. I've seen how naive religion makes people

Phaenx 05-17-2004 05:51 PM

The first time they do it is either going to be very akward, or the greatest feat of sexual prowess man has ever known.

I bet he gives her such an efficient German sexing that they time travel.

I agree. These people would have to live in a cave to not know how to make a baby.

mingusfingers 05-17-2004 06:41 PM

There sex ed in the german system? Or were they the home schooled types?

I never thought anyone could live to be 18 years old and not know that babies came out of a vagina as well, but the guy that Redjake is talking about is true. He's one of my friends. :)

Tuffy_McGee 05-17-2004 06:58 PM

Someone needs to tell them about "Where babies come from"

LOL.

Yikes, they must have had NO social life outside of church, NO television, and NO education about life in general.

Asuka{eve} 05-17-2004 07:02 PM

.......... This is a serious contrast from 70% of Chinese learn sex from internet pr0n.

skier 05-17-2004 08:31 PM

I wonder if they got beaten every time they asked about sex...
seriously how could you not figure it out?

sexymama 05-17-2004 08:32 PM

Sounds like an urban legend to me.

ariekitten 05-17-2004 09:53 PM

my mom used to say she was so fertile that she could get knocked up just by my dad lookin at her.....is this anywhere along those lines???? LMFAO!

Macheath 05-17-2004 09:54 PM

Just lie back and think of the fatherland, or your parish priest - you know, whatever floats your boat.

yeah, chances are if your grandparents didn't have kids, you wouldn't either.

SixEdxMia 05-17-2004 10:42 PM

Every young christian knows full well that When a man and a woman love each other and commit for life that god will bless them with a child. Maybe they were waiting on the stork?

((You want him to put what?!?! where?!?))

stevie667 05-18-2004 01:24 AM

probably a case of not wanting to do the deed because satan would consume them or something, so therefor there must have been a nice religous way...

cliche 05-18-2004 01:29 AM

I'm not so surprised. When I was in dissection some years back, a girl on my table (Canadian aged 23 at the time, now a doctor) was utterly shocked to learn that the human penis has 2 functions... An amazing mixture of surprise and disgust went across her face which I won't forget in a hurry.

Jadey 05-18-2004 02:20 AM

Wow! I'm the exact opposite. I grew up with a mother who taught the sex ed classes at my junior high school. I used to get a box of condoms in my stocking at Xmas, so, I was at the other end of the sex information spectrum.

yabobo 05-18-2004 03:34 AM

I just find that too hard to swallow! pun intended.

There is sex ed in our system. I think those people came from a extreme religious sect.

denim 05-18-2004 11:25 AM

If it's true, I really feel bad sorry for these people. OTOH, now they get to learn it all! Should be fun, once they manage to get over their own hang-ups.

nogoodreason 05-18-2004 01:26 PM

Can you imagine how awkward sex would be for the first time if you'd both lived to be adults and never even heard of how to do it? The speculation is fantastic.

Otherwise, this seems entirely impossible. They went to the fertility clinic. They tested his fertility. That means he had to cum into a cup. He, at least, had to have some clue that his wee-wee had some role to play in procreation. No matter how religious, it doesn't seem plausible.

gdr2004 05-18-2004 02:34 PM

Is this a parody site? It has to be.

Gjefflin 05-18-2004 05:02 PM

I'm sorry. They MUST be retarded.

Nachimir 05-18-2004 06:32 PM

Bizarre!

I was raised a Jehovah's Witness with a mother intent on keeping me away from porn, etc, yet I still knew all about the mechanics of sex by the time I was eight (Probably one of the few things I wasn't naive about when I ditched religion).

I agree about the comedic value of that story :)

MSD 05-18-2004 07:27 PM

Urban Legend. Nobody is that stupid.

billege 05-18-2004 10:06 PM

I don't see it. Unless one lived in a vaccuum and never questioned anything, I don't see it.

I just can't imagine anyone so non-questioning and oblivious as to not figure it out.

Nachimir 05-19-2004 03:50 AM

It might not be true, but it's not entirely unbelievable.

If people grow up in an environment such as a non-mainstream religion or sect, where they intentionally segregate themselves from the rest of society, people are embarrassed to talk about sex or even think sex itself is sinful, they're told as kids that "touching yourself is bad, it's a sin", and every time they ask a question they're pointed toward the bible, it's perfectly possible.

If people are conditioned with enough guilt and fear, it can easily overwhelm curiosity.

Kostya 05-19-2004 04:57 AM

Quite clearly these religious zealots learnt sex education...

It's justthey failed to recognise that the story of the Immaculate Conception is an atypical example...

From snopes:

http://snopes.com/pregnant/nosex.asp
Quote:

Sex is a subject which, because it has long been considered an inappropriate subject for public discourse in our society, is a particularly favorite topic of non-public discourse. We gossip about people who are having sex, we gossip about people who aren't having sex, and we gossip about people who are having too much sex. We titter about people who know too much about sex, and we chortle at people who know too little about sex.

The latter point is well-represented in urban folklore, which abounds with tales of sexually naive adults who don't understand what sex is, have sex the "wrong" way, or don't grasp the rudiments of birth control. Thus we have tales of childless couples who discover their infertility is due to either a complete lack of intercourse or to the husband's mistakenly penetrating his wife's urethra (because no one ever explained sex or proper sexual techniques to them), couples who use prophylactics by placing them on the ends of bananas or broomsticks (because that's how condom use was demonstrated to them), and women aghast at finding themselves pregnant even though they've been consuming contraceptive jelly.

(In Joseph Heller's novel Catch-22, Doc Daneeka reminisces to Yossarian about his days in private practice, and he talks about a couple who once came to him because they were unable to conceive a child. Despite the couple's claims of regular sex, the doctor discovered upon examination that the wife was still a virgin. He used plastic models to demonstrate to the couple how to have sex the "correct" way, and a few days later the husband returned and punched him in the face.)

In May 2004, yet another news article reported the classic "couple discovers they're childless because they're not having sex" tale, this one supposedly involving a German couple who reported to an IVF clinic at Lübeck University for infertility testing, where the staff determined the cause of the couple's childless state was their having "never made love" — they thought all they had to do in order to conceive was "to lie next to each other and let nature take its course." (Their ignorance of sex was attributed to their having been brought up in a "strict religious environment.")

As far as we can tell, this recent version of the story originated in the 18 May 2004 edition of the UK newspaper The Mirror and was picked up from there by other news sources, including UPI. The article looks to be either a spoof or a hoax — the type of story one would expect to find in a supermarket tabloid — not only because it repeats a common urban legend motif, but also because:

* It has a lack of detail common to tabloid or spoof articles: The couple is identified only as a "husband" and a "wife" (with no quotes from either), and no name or title is provided for the article's single source of information, a university representative (he's merely an unnamed "spokesman").

* The spokesman states that it was only after the couple "were subjected to a battery of tests and both were found to be perfectly fertile that we asked them how often they had sex." In-depth questions about frequency and nature of sexual activity are generally asked of couples well before any actual fertility testing is undertaken, in part for this very reason (i.e., nobody wants to run a battery of expensive tests only to find out that some external factor was responsible for the couple's failure to conceive — like maybe the couple is engaging in sex infrequently, and always at a time when the woman is probably not ovulating.)

* The article includes some way over-the-top, buffoonish statements (ones not befitting a medical professional) based upon information supplied by the putative spokesman, such as: "We're not talking about retards here, but a couple who were brought up in a strict religious environment" and "The couple had read up about in-vitro fertilisation treatment but believed it was something to do with a 'turkey baster, a mattress and a woman standing on her head.'" (Would a couple so ignorant of the basics of sex and pregnancy really understand the concept of IVF?)

* No one we contacted at Lübeck University (at least, no English-speaking personnel — my command of German is nicht so gut) had any knowledge of this story

The Mirror hasn't responded to our inquiries yet, but we'd be quite surprised if this report turned out to be anything but a fictional bit of humor.
So although it's not definately false, that's where my money is.

Deominous 05-20-2004 03:13 PM

We all know that they were actually having sex. However to them it must have been such an intensely personal thing, certainly nothing they would ever want to share or get caught doing. I wonder how many trips they took to Thailand.

greytone 05-20-2004 04:50 PM

What is this "SEX" that you are all speaking of? It sounds like fun.

That's very funny. I can see how some people are ignorant to not know it, but I find it hard to believe that they were tested before asked how often they had sex.
