Are you a Mod?

Do you own Quadrophenia?

Do love Scooters?

Do you wear vintage clothes?

Are you cooler than all those stupid Rockers?

A little history...
‘The Mods’. A Mod was a product of working class British youth of the mid-sixties. They portrayed an image of being stuck up, emulating the middle classes, snobbish and phoney. The Mod boys dressed in suits, neat narrow trousers, and pointed shoes. The girls displayed a boyish image. They darkened their eyes and wore their hair short to fit a unisex type of culture.
The Mods were essentially from London and the South East and were complete followers of the latest fashion. They consumed purple hearts (a mixture of amphetamine and barbiturates). Each had to have a Lambretta GT 200 or a Vespa GS 160. These were their scooters that they rode as part of their stigma that connected them to being a Mod.
The Mods had a very distinct, yet common interest in music. While the Beatles were enjoying immense popularity and success among Britain's mainstream society in the early 1960's, the first-wave of Mods pursued a different sound. They adopted modern jazz, which was a style of music originated in Black America. Through the jazz music of Black America, the Mods appeared to distinguish themselves from mainstream society. They seemed to be attracted to the "cool" demeanor and elegant clothing possessed by jazz musicians, and strived to emulate their style.

The Rockers...The Rockers enjoyed Rock and Roll, and their style consisted of jeans, boots and leather jackets. The Rockers were a British version of the Hell’s Angels motorcycle gang. They wore black leather and studs, had anti-authority beliefs, and projected an easy rider nomadic romanticism. The Rockers lived for the present, with a scruffy, masculine, ‘bad boy’ image.
The Rockers were essentially from the working class and despised any fashion. They each had the same hairstyle, shaggy with a bit of slick to it. The Ace Café was the hangout of the Rockers for the greasy foods and jukeboxes. Riding motorcycles was of the upmost importance, so they kept away from drugs and alcohol. The motorcycles were also modified or "souped up" in order to be in top racing form. Every Rocker had a ‘Triumph’ or a ‘Norton’, a brand of motorcycle.
The conflict between the two groups was largely created by the media which was trying to make both groups look bad.

Loki 05-08-2003 04:10 AM

hmm, if i was presented with a choice between the two sub-cultures, i guess id go for mod.

(and on a few nights go out with the rockers ^^)

thanks for clearing that up btw redravin =)

platypus 05-08-2003 04:57 AM

No, I'm a mocker.

blkdmnd 05-08-2003 06:52 AM

Thx red. Interesting reading. Even though I was born in that era, I had no idea what this thread was about.

Rocker, as it pertains to today's society.

Cynthetiq 05-08-2003 06:53 AM

what about poseur??? can I be one of those?

GSRIDER 05-08-2003 07:17 AM

Do I wear a skinny tie, and a shark skin suit? Yup. Do I ride a scooter.... no. Do I hang out with the Upsetters SC? yup.

So scooters are making a huge comeback, so is ska and rocksteady. Young bucks running around in suits and porkpies. Ahhh youth, I love it. I believe this is the fourth resurgence wave of this subcult... and those vespas are not getting any cheaper.

I'm just babbling really. Not a mod, not a rocker... just an old punk with a t1 line and a facination w/ motorcycles and great music.

rockogre 05-08-2003 07:34 AM

ROCKER, 110%

I own Quadrophenia, a Norton, Jeans, Boots, and a Leather Jacket. Also have the bad attitude.

We fart in the general direction of Mods.

Thanks redravin40 for explaining our obvious superiority to Mods.

Charlatan 05-08-2003 10:03 AM

Do I own Quadrophenia? Yes.

Am I a Mod... not really. I like some of the fashions but have never really been willing to committ to any sub-culture.

I do drive a Vespa though and if I could figure out how to post pictures I would post a picture of it...

Bill O'Rights 05-08-2003 11:26 AM

I'm sure glad I'm not the only one who doesn't know what the $#%& is going on. I feel so out of it.

juanvaldes 05-08-2003 12:02 PM

Troublebot 05-08-2003 12:44 PM

Probably more of a hick.

Not that I'm proud of it.

Can I be a rocker hick?

merkerguitars 11-16-2004 08:37 PM

Nazggul 11-16-2004 08:59 PM

OK, you are a carbon copy of a friend of mine, (or he of you), Ziggy. Man, you could be twins.

Me? I am not a Mod.

Halx 11-16-2004 09:24 PM

I'm a rivethead lite!

Deckard 11-16-2004 09:32 PM

I'm cyber-punk/goth or Rivet Head I guess. What else do you expect from a 6'8" 24yo who loves Rammstein and all things EBM.

Paradise Lost 11-16-2004 09:40 PM

I'm a rocker, but the funny thing is, I also love to dress up in suits... Go figure.

StormBerlin 11-16-2004 11:42 PM

Holy Shit, talk about reviving an old thread...

jwoody 11-17-2004 03:33 AM

Most definitely a MOD.

I used to own a Lambretta. Had to give it up after the ultimate embarassment of having to tell my girlfriend to get off and walk up a (not very steep) hill.

I've owned 4 Vespas.

I have 2 tailored suits.

I own Quadrophenia on VHS and DVD.

I spend more on clothes than all other expenses combined.

When I see:

http://www.geocities.com/modrevival/mod_target.gif

The Royal Air Force is not what immediately comes to mind.

I dislike 'rockers' for no other reason than they are rockers.

One minus MOD point because I also own The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle on VHS.

*Hrrrroooiik... pa-thoo* Dirty Rocker scumbags.

Aw'roight 'king. You cammin' dahn Broighton this weekend?

 very funny!

I'm a rocker. but nowadays, the term has blended (i think) because anybody who is not into the new disco (Hip Hop) can be a rocker even tho they are Mods.....

btw, Was Elvis (Costello) a Mod for his era?

and: I do not own Quadraphenia, but have Tommy, Meaty Beaty, Big & Bouncy and The Kids Are Alright.

I bought a Kawasaki 450, but my mom made me sell it, said it wasn't lady-like.

pinkie 11-17-2004 08:23 AM

Mod.

I'm buying a Vespa this spring, too! :D

bullmoose 11-17-2004 09:08 AM

I used to own a Vespa and dress like the Beatles back in the day.
I still have an original copy of Quadrophenia.

Then after going through an age of enlightenment, bought me some Levis and a Triumph and never looked back.

Damn, I sure miss that Triumph.

tropple 11-17-2004 09:37 AM

Sex, drugs, Rock & Roll

stonegrody 11-17-2004 09:37 AM

Rocker. I don't mind mod's though. They are always there for me when I need a cup of coffee

tspikes51 11-17-2004 04:37 PM

Both. I don't really fall into one single label. Right now, I'm in the library with a pressed, collared rayon shirt on with a pair of jeans that have stains on them from weed-eating this summer. Hey, I like to look nice, but only when I don't have to do laundry every day. I also live rock music, (OK, live was a typo, I meant "love," but that's true also) have been in many a pit before (mostly pulling stupid little kids out so they don't get trampled), but I still enjoy some Coltrane and other jazz every now and then.
