Favourite Unconventional Snack Food

As i sit here munching on my apple and peanut butter at 1:07 am (Avoiding the nagging thought of having to work very shortly), i'm just curious as to any other unconventional snacking food combinations... Lame thread i know, but i'm curious nonetheless.

Nancy 04-23-2004 12:33 AM

I'll bet charlatan would find that apple/peanut butter thing delicious - as for me: euuuw!

I prefer: cheese with Nutella, mmmmmm!

fatboss 04-23-2004 02:09 AM

OK, take me through the process please.

How do you get the Peanut Butter on the apple?

Peanut Butter...........*drool*

Being an English boy, I still get funny looks from people when they see me eating PB & J

Strange folk!

Aletheia 04-23-2004 02:19 AM

almost any condiment + bread = awesome

Cottage cheese + sugar + coffee.

Absolutely brilliant.

Redlemon 04-23-2004 03:50 AM

My father-in-law likes grape jelly on american cheese.

tecoyah 04-23-2004 03:56 AM

Freshly juiced carrots........ooohhh, so sweet.

Me? Peanut butter on apples? Not so much. But my son loves it. He sits down with apple slices and speads the PB on them one after the other... Not my thing...

Now... Nutella on cheese? who was saying euuuuw?

Polyphobic 04-23-2004 06:18 AM

Peanut butter, crackers, and brown sugar.

Brown sugar+ peanut butter + mostly anything = yum

Crack 04-23-2004 06:52 AM

I like peanut butter on waffels... or pancakes.. and syrup!

or peanut butter and pancake syrup mixed up then put that on bread... or... chicken nuggets with ranch dressing...

Yakk 04-23-2004 07:49 AM

Penut Butter Banana Split.

Cut the Banana length-wise, so you end up with 2 banana-shaped half-bananas.

Carefully spread the PB on one of the two bananas. You want nice clumpage. This is hard, bananas are slick.

Make a sandwich.

Cut the Banana-sandwich into bite sized chunks using a SHARP knife. A dull knife will cause the PB to squeeze out.

Eat.

Do not eat if you need to speak in the next hour! =)

For a less healthy wierd snack:

Waffles, Vanilla Ice Cream and Maple Surup.

More healthy again:

Pineapple and Unsweetened yogurt.

edit spelling.

absorbentishe 04-23-2004 08:12 AM

Cottage cheese with some french dressing mixed in. Kind of sweet and sour!

Redlemon 04-23-2004 08:18 AM

I like to mix salsa into my tuna fish & mayo... would that be considered weird?

moonstrucksoul 04-23-2004 08:22 AM

some of those just sound untasty, but everyone is different and we all have different taste buds.

peanut butter + apples :)

yogurt + grapenuts cereal :)

Junchbailey 04-23-2004 08:38 AM

peanut butter + carrots (especially those little baby carrots)

peanut butter & banana sandwich

onodrim 04-23-2004 08:40 AM

I love having ranch dressing on french fries, sooooo good. :)

k1ng 04-23-2004 08:49 AM

i dont especially care for bananas anymore, but when i used to eat them a lot I would wrap a slice of american cheese around it and eat it.

I actually got that tip from Mr. Rogers when I was a kid.

Hanxter 04-23-2004 08:59 AM

sour cream with Tabasco sauce blended in and plain doritos

cocktail onions dipped in sour cream

cream cheese with shrimp cocktail sauce blended in on wheat thins

Charlatan 04-23-2004 09:00 AM

"american cheese" always makes me laugh...

...its right up there with "american english"

SabrinaFair 04-23-2004 09:20 AM

I used to love banana peppers, American cheese and mayonnaise sandwiches. Haven't had one in a while...but that sounds pretty good...I'm going to get me snack. :-)

fallenangel 04-23-2004 09:58 AM

ranch dressing + anything = amazing

mmm, green grapes, cheese and crackers (stone wheat thins work best) mmmm

hey! I agreed to taste a peanut butter/jelly sandwich so you go ahead and give cheese/nutella a go! :D

CinnamonGirl 04-23-2004 10:14 AM

Shredded cheddar cheese with French dressing...mmmm. I guess that's not too weird, though, since people put both cheese and dressing on salads...I just skip the lettuce and stuff.

Nothing weird about cookies and milk, but I like to crumble Oreos up in a glass, pour milk over them, and eat it with a spoon. Apparently this is weird :p

amonkie 04-23-2004 10:19 AM

Crackprogram, you took all mine! Only other one I think I can contribute is putting cream cheese in salsa and then scooping up both with the chips

Lebell 04-23-2004 10:28 AM

I've done peanut butter/bananas and peanut butter/apples before.

To do the apples, just cut up the apple into slices and use a knife to put the peanut butter on the apples slices.

I haven't seen my favorite snacks from my youth: ketchup sandwiches and Miracle Whip sandwiches :D

World's King 04-23-2004 10:33 AM

I'm boring.

I have a friend that eats wasabi and peanutbutter sandwiches.

samiam 04-23-2004 11:19 AM

Soy beans in shells are a great snack.

04-23-2004 11:40 AM

mmmm- apples & peanut butter, yummy.

I snack on Wheaties before I go to bed. I also like chesse. plain. especially colby.

Mephisto2 04-23-2004 11:07 PM

Onion sandwiches

Mr Mmmmmmephisto

KellyC 04-23-2004 11:17 PM

Butter Milk Bread + Condense Milk = Yummy snack.

dip it, pour it, spread it, however you like. its good.

oh yeah...also..my mom's egg roll with fish sauce. I can snack on 20 of those lil' things. Yummmmm

analog 04-24-2004 12:05 AM

I like to put sliced onion on a grilled cheese sandwich every once in a while. Not very common, that combination. :)

Fremen 04-24-2004 12:41 AM

peanut-butter spread on Ritz cracker w/picante sauce on top

and

grilled cheese with a tomato slice inside with the cheese, and sometimes the whole sandwich dipped in egg, on both sides, then grilled like you do French toast.

Fob_Magi 04-24-2004 01:30 AM

well I like dried squid snacks (theyre a popular asian snack)..

but I have a friend that used to eat Peanut Butter, Bacon Bits and Parmesian Cheese on a sandwhich...

gump 04-24-2004 04:17 AM

i guess i'm a little wierd but i love deer jerky. i can't get enough of that junk. it makes a great snack when your at the house or out fishing or anything.

Damn. I was going to say that. With butter.
I also like to make a cheese sandwich, throw in five or six whole green onions (somewhat trimmed) and nuke it in the microwave. Goopy and chewy at the same time.

Cheese and apples are a favorite TV snack for the wife and I. I cut the apples up into french-fry-sized slices.

Also, a bowl of brown rice or barley, topped with butter and brown sugar and then nuked in the microwave until the butter and sugar both melt. Better than any pudding I've ever had.

Yakk 04-24-2004 08:54 AM

Oh yes, that does remind me.

Turkey Coldcut, Wasabi and Mustard.

Lie out the Turkey. Draw 2 lines of mustard near the middle, and spread a small amout of wasabi at one end. Roll from the wasabi end.

Tangy and tasty!

matteo101 04-24-2004 09:42 AM

Hellmanns mayo spread on toast is sometimes a midnight snack. I like to cut a babybell cheese in half lengthwise and melt it in between two saltine crackers. And when I make KD(macaroni and cheese) I throw in tons of real bacon bits, ketchup and hotsauce, and it is sooo good.

Me too. I like a little salsa to dip in too.

If anyone else out there 'loves' ranch, you should consider making your own with hidden valley mix, and heavy mayonnaise. It's really good.

brianna 04-24-2004 11:12 AM

apple slices are also yummy with mustard -- particularly apples+sharp cheddar cheese+trader joes hot and sweet mustard = yummy+ in+ my+ tummy

tropple 04-24-2004 12:37 PM

Dark chocolate fudge and very hot salsa.

raeanna74 04-24-2004 01:29 PM

There are a few odd ones in here that I wouldn't have even thought of.

As for peanut butter and apples - I've tried that - Yum!
For snacks I also like: Grits with butter and salt, Graham Crackers with peanut butter, and cinnamon sugar, cucumber slices topped with tuna and mayo, or dill pickle and cheese slices sandwiched together. Some of those I fell for while I was pregnant. I guess I've never gotten over them.

His best tip for kids was popcorn on peanut butter sandwiches.

The easier way for PB and apple is to cut the apple in half, scoop the core out with a spoon, then fill the hole with peanut butter.

If you're outa dip, ketchup and mayo mixed together will do.

Apparantly, although it used to be common, it is now strange to put a slice of sharp cheddar on apple pie. . .

jRuntlets 04-24-2004 05:05 PM

Personally I like a sundried tomato bagel toasted - with plain cream cheese and two sandwich pickles. Like a sandwich. Mmm.

DelayedReaction 04-24-2004 05:12 PM

I concur with the Ranch n' French Fries.

French Fries covered in Old Bay are great (it's a Maryland thing).

One of my other favorites is Pancakes topped with Bailey's Irish Creme. Delicious.

Fenton-J-Cool 04-24-2004 05:41 PM

I've heard of some of these, and eaten on a regular basis many that some are passing off as 'weird' :(

Try your favourite jelly (strawberry works best) and cheddar cheese on a bagel.

The first truly unorthodox combination I can think of is as follows (place ingredients on counter in the numbered order)

1. Soda Cracker, unsalted
2. Medium Cheddar cheese square
3. Hot Pepper ring or two

Macedonian food = new hotness

SlackrJon 04-24-2004 09:59 PM

Peanut Butter, Rice Krispies, Sugar and Milk. YUM

bernadette 04-24-2004 10:12 PM

peanut butter & sliced tomato betwixt bread (sandwich) = omg soooo good!!!
don't laugh. trust me. try it.

diced tomato in cottage cheese with salt & pepper

a couple spoonfuls of godiva belgian dark chocolate ice cream in coffee. *orgasm*

floydthebarber 04-24-2004 10:53 PM

What is "American cheese"? Is it cheddar?

I like aged cheddar with bread and butter pickles over top.
Mayo on my fries.
Anchovies right out of the can on stoned wheat crackers.
Pickled herring.
Raw asparagus.
A sheet of nori (seaweed for sushi).
Artichoke hearts.
Shrimp crackers.
Bri and hot salsa heated up a bit...yum.

I can go on...I'm all about unconventional snack foods.

Blackthorn 04-25-2004 09:57 AM

Frozen grapes are great poolside treats.

bobbobbobbob 04-25-2004 11:00 AM

I've been getting into gnawing on lumps of spanish chorizo recently - I get odd looks, but it's good stuff.

No, it's processed cheese (sorta like Velveeta, if you know what that is).

It's one of the few things that America has produced that makes me hang my head in shame...

Fo-choon cookie!

Fishin Musician 04-25-2004 03:27 PM

Peanut butter the all purpose food!! I love peanut butter and banana sandwiches, and peanut butter and fresh pineapple. I also like peanut butter on my hamburgers…don’t knock it, it’s not bad!

Another favorite is a cup of coffee with saltines in it.

rmorgenstern 04-25-2004 05:18 PM

Raisins, salted and dried cecci / fagioli (get them at Italian grocery stores), filberts, salted and dried cashews all mixed together ... kind of a trail mix

Yogurt+apple+honey+bannana+almond butter.
yum

Date the Banana 04-25-2004 06:42 PM

medium sized soft tortilla, olive oil and parmesan cheese, toast for three minutes=gooooooood

and I have no idea why, but my mouth started watering after reading just about all of these, no matter how bizarre they sounded...

Jolt 04-25-2004 06:50 PM

I haven't had a peanut butter & onion sandwich in a long time...will do that this week as the Vidalias are just in now. woo hoo!

I also have made PBJs using pop-tarts instead of bread and jelly.

Whoever said venison jerky, I agree, the stuff is sooo good, especially with a little teriyaki.

Lately I've found that washing down Balance bars with a can of Slim-Fast is frigging great...it's better than Red Bull...hehehehe *boioioioioingggg*

SecretMethod70 04-25-2004 07:19 PM

For snack foods, sometimes I really like sardines, others I like pickles, and still others I like Jalepeno peppers :)

TipsyMcStagger 04-25-2004 10:07 PM

Yogurt + Cottage Cheese

And maybe just a bit of cinnamon

Gortexfogg 04-26-2004 06:06 AM

Fritos dipped in barbecue sauce...mmmm, it's my absolute favorite!

metalgeek 04-27-2004 03:02 AM

ants on a log:) peanut butter, spread on celery, with raisins on it, haven't had it in years though.
here in China, it's be:
Chongqing Strange Tasteing Horse Beans.
(yes they do taste strange)
also when I was a kid I used to make: pb+honey+white sugar+raisins+chocolate chip sandwhichs... no wonder I have bad teeth:)

greytone 04-27-2004 03:57 AM

At the movies, a friend taught me to throw the chocolate covered peanuts in the hot popcorn. They melt a little and the salt and sweet and soft and crunchy make a great pairing. I like peanuts, but I don't like them put in many recipes. I tend to only eat them alone. So I tried it with the chocolate raisins which I think is even better because it has dark chocolate and adds a chewy texture.

sexymama 04-27-2004 05:50 AM

I can't believe I just found this thread and no one has mentioned Peanut Butter and dill pickle sandwich -- the best!

(Lebell will have to make his own Mircle Whip sandwiches -- ughh!);)

Redgirl 04-27-2004 07:04 AM

In keeping with the snack theme and not the meal theme (because I love PB on my pancakes too, but that's not a snack for me anyway!):
peanut butter on apples
Very ripe bananas dipped in white sugar (I like my bananas when the peel is turning brown)
frosting right out of the container
Doritos, bean dip and salsa (I don't think this is strange, but others have said it was.)
And probably the strangest for me... pickled okra. Strange because I hate salt and wipe it off all my chips and french fries, and yet pickled okra is salty as hell.

And btw: I love american cheese- it makes the best grilled cheese sandwich. Which I then dip in my tomato soup... mmmm I'm so hungry now!

jizzmasterp 04-27-2004 06:38 PM

A grilled cheese sandwich with peanut butter kicks ass. French Fries dipped in chocolate milkshake or mustard are great. Turkey breast + Turkey Sausage on whole wheat bread. Turkey Sausage + Cheddar cheese grilled on Rye bread.

minyn 04-27-2004 07:12 PM

a brick of ramen. good eatings!

SixEdxMia 04-28-2004 12:17 AM

I eat cold tortillas.
*shrug*

MaGlC_MaN 04-28-2004 05:21 AM

i've only tried this while high, so do it at your own risk.

honey + tortilla chips or..
honey + bread

again, i did it while i was high and it tasted good, but what doesnt? :P

Perhaps my most fattening snack is an oreo dipped in peanut butter. Ahhhh......

Peanut butter and apples, a peanut butter and banana sandwich, and just plain peanut butter are also good snacks.

I also like pretzels and salsa, french fries and ranch, or a chocolate bar wrapped in a slice of white bread- got that one from my mom.

glasscutter43 04-29-2004 07:23 AM

Toasted peanut butter, banana and grape jelly sandwich and a glass of cold milk.

Battered Mars Bar

Don't knock it till you've tried it!
Sounds disgusting. Looks disgustiing. Tastes incredible! You'd have to try it to believe it.

sixate 04-29-2004 12:29 PM

I like to smear peanut butter on banana's. Jiff creamy to be exact.

nogoodreason 04-29-2004 02:05 PM

When I was a kid, I used to really, really enjoy saltine crackers dipped in Black Cherry Kool-aid. The floaties were the best part.

Now that my tastes have matured, I'm a huge fan of a nice, spicy mustard spread across good swiss cheese. No Kraft singles, those are to be eaten all by their lonesome.

Ranch dressing on anything.
Melted Velveeta cheese on anything.

Southern delicacies:
Souse meat, potted meat, vienna sausages, all of which are very nicely complimented by Tabasco and Saltine crackers. All of which are things you would never eat if you knew the actual ingredients.

Sounds like you invented the poor man's easy version of the sopapilla. Try adding cinnamon next time. Of course real sopapilla uses flour tortillas instead of corn.

Grilled Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwich -
The PB melts, and it's absolute heaven

If'n you are feeling a bit naughty -- throw some Nutella or some chocolate onto the PB before grilling it--

maleficent 05-03-2004 07:03 PM

I discovered those in Scotland, and gawd are they good. its really no different than the US Fair Food tradition of deep frying Twinkies.
To deep fry a Candy Bar, and Mars Bars, Milky Ways, Almond Joys, anything will deep fry -- chill it first then mix 1 cup of floud, 1/2 cup of corn flour, 1 tsp of baking soda, and milk (or beer) to make the batter has the consistency of heavy cream.
Heat enough oil, coat the chilled candy bar in the coating and fry until golden brown.
Have paramedics standing by for when you have your coronary.

I have discovered that as a result of my university cafeteria days, I mostly eat food for the condiments. For example, ketchup can make anything edible. I noticed this when I looked in my fridge and found the various condiments crowding the real food. I also can't keep croutons in the house. what's a person to do...

la petite moi 05-03-2004 08:07 PM

Bowl of dry Honeycombs/Special K.

ANYTHING, yes ANYTHING with Extra Sharp Cheddar.

On a side note I am definatly trying Tuna, Mayo, and Salsa. Sounds delish.

cliv 05-08-2004 07:08 AM

How about peanut butter on pizza ? It sounds weird, but it tastes fine. To spread the PB, the cheese has to be somewhat solid, so it's best with day-old pizza that has been in the referigerator overnight.
