VOICE lifts?!!

Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse...

Surgery 'makes you sound young'
A growing number of patients are having this surgery
Doctors in the United States are offering patients voice lifts to help them sound younger.

The surgery involves plumping up the vocal cords to turn old shaky voices into strong clear ones.

The technique has previously only been used on people who have lost their voices through injury or disease.

But doctors say it is becoming popular with patients who have already had plastic surgery and want to sound as well as look younger than they are.

"There are people who pay $15,000 for a face lift and as soon as they open their mouth, they sound like they're 75," said Dr Robert Thayer Sataloff of the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia.

"The wobbles, the tremors, they're what we recognise as things that make a voice sound old."

Vocal cords

Surgeons can make the voice sound younger by bringing the vocal cords closer together.

This is done by injecting collagen or similar substances to plump the vocal cords up.

It can benefit people like politicians and teachers who need to have a strong voice that carries
Dr Leroy Young
"The surgery brings the vocal folds closer together either by injecting a material through the mouth fat or a bone like substance or collagen or by making a little incision in the neck and implanting a little piece of gortex to bring all of the vocal fold tissues closer together," said Dr Thayer Sataloff.

"Either one of those techniques will take a voice that is soft and breathy and give it strength and solidity that makes it sound more believable and younger."

Doctors said the technique could be particularly helpful for people who use their voice in their careers.

"It can benefit people who may be getting toward the end of a singing career," said Dr Leroy Young of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

"It can benefit people like politicians and teachers who need to have a strong voice that carries," he said.

"I'd say caveat emptor for the professional singer but if you're a teacher and you don't want to sound like Marlene Dietrich, it's something to consider."

If it helps your self esteem, I'd say go for it. Don't think that's the primary motivation, though.

Good for radio DJs...
*stifles laugh*
AHAHAHAHAHA! God! That was stoopid!

I think they need a "brain lift"

Karby 04-20-2004 08:14 PM

that's stupid...though i can't really blame 'em. with our society placing so much emphasis on youth and beauty and everything thats supposed to come with it, it was bound to happen...

Hmm... That gives me an idea...

I think that is really cool. I'd be curious to know if they could adjust your singing range up or down as well; I'd love to have a power-bass voice, but I'm a second tenor.

Midnight_Son 04-21-2004 07:22 AM

I don't see anything wrong with it at all.

FaderMonkey 04-21-2004 07:32 AM

There is no way I would do it, but if someone wants to, go for it. I would never let anyone fuck with my vocal cords. I'd be too scared that something bad would happen and I wouldn't be able to talk again. No way.

Nisses 04-21-2004 07:46 AM

Actually, it makes your voice sound stronger and a bit louder.
There's no way of telling *what* your voice will sound like afterwards, and it's effect on your vocal range can be equally unpredictable... so a singer should really think twice before attempting it.

Normally, it's a procedure reserved for people with problems in their voice after a coma, long illness or viral infection that have a hard time getting themselves heard when there's any other noise at all, like moderate social gatherings, or even on the phone. For them, it's a handicap.

If you depend on your voice, it's highly dangerous to consider. And if you don't depend on your voice, it's not worth the cost/danger.

Their voice sucks maybe?

Sooner or later they'll know how to modify your voice so that you can sound like a celebrity. Who needs cloning when you have plastic surgery?

Hahaha...yeah, because they have the most money, and the most to lose! Seriously, though, if I were that old and still singing, I just know my fans would say, "WTF happened to his voice? He sounds like Donald Duck now."

Let's face it: there's no end to vanity when the money's there.

onodrim 04-21-2004 07:41 PM

Oh my god, being a singer, I would never ever mess with my vocal cords. Everyone gets older, everyone's voice will eventually fade, this is life. Why can people no longer deal with this fact? *sigh*

If you want to strengthen your voice, there are plenty of non surgical ways to accomplish this. But of course that would take effort and practice, and who has the patience for that anymore.
