Birthdays

I'm not that old, my 19th is coming up in less than two weeks, and i'm sort of fearing the worst for it. You see, i've had an odd run of shitty birthdays for the last couple years and i don't want to expect too much from this one as well. I mean, i'm living in a new city, away from home and most of my friends, turning legal drinking age in fucking VANCOUVER people! *sigh* and i don't want to get excited about it because i know it's not going to go at all the way i'm wanting it to.

To top it off, it's also my three year anniversary with, well let's call him loverboy for now (to coin Nancy's phrase). But i don't know what we are and i don't know if i'm supposed to celebrate it or not cuz i don't know how he's feeling about it. I dunno...

Stupid birthdays, stupid childish dreaming. I used to love them. I'm the kind of person that makes a big deal out of everyone's birthday that i know... but then mine backfire in my face on me... Gah, i'm ranting, i just really wanted to know from everyone if they celebrate birthdays still, at what point am i supposed to just shut up about it, forget the goodybags and party hats and leave well enough alone.

The greater the expectations, the greater the dissapointment.
Don't have any!

I just turned 25 and as the years go by I accept it as just another birthday and I am not looking for any big celebration or great presents. Being with family and friends means the most to me. Just take it easy and enjoy another year of your life and be grateful for the ones you love and who love you, be grateful for your life and all will go well. ;) Happy early bday!

Just think of a birthday as an oppurtunity for you to show your affection towards the people you love. If you blow it, then they will probably be very mad at your for a while, until you make it up to them. It shouldnt be much more than that, although you are turning drinking age so you should have some obvious plans. I'm not sure if you should think of it as a traditional birthday party, even if birthday cake is a neccesity for you.

jay-g 04-20-2004 11:02 AM

When you were little, birthdays were so exciting. And i would be like," i want this and this". Now, it gets repetitive and i dont want anything or expect too much. Mostly a nice dinner with friends or family is good, and i would be happy with that. After awhile and time passes, it seems like more of a regular day. And you start dreading birthdays, more than, getting excited for them. "I dont want to grow up, cuz if i did, i wouldnt be a Toys R Us kid." Growing up sucks.

Cynthetiq 04-20-2004 11:16 AM

birthdays? you still worry about birthdays?

Blackthorn 04-20-2004 11:21 AM

You have the right to expect that people will at some age stop making a big deal out of your birthday. That age is around 11.

Seriously...I'm going to be 40 this year and woo hooo...no one gives a poop. Not even me. :)

water_boy1999 04-20-2004 03:46 PM

Get this. I share my birthday with my younger sister and my mom. Yup, 3 in one day. I have never had my own birthday. In fact, it was supposed to be a big deal when I was younger, but now it isn't as much. I resented the fact that I never had my own B-Day. Now I cherish that day because it is my way of showing my love for my mom and sis. Cherish your B-Day like it will be your last. Go out on the town, have a few drinks, and don't sweat the small stuff! Happy B-Day~

My birthday lasts about 45 combined minutes, on the day of my birth. My wifes birthday lasts from June thru September of each year. In fact the only reason it stops is to celebrate Halloween.

present_future 04-21-2004 12:22 PM

I've pretty much stopped expecting big things from my birthdays. Not that I haven't had any good ones, some of my birthdays have been damn good, but I guess I don't really see the point of celebrating sometimes.

World's King 04-21-2004 12:41 PM

I'm more worried about my un-birthdays.

paddyjoe 04-21-2004 01:48 PM

Hmm, Vancouver eh?

Why don't you PM flyman and splck. Odds are those two boys'll show you to the birthday of your life.

They are less of an event as you get older, but just let your friends keep you busy for the day. Don't give up the 'childish dreaming' either. Once that's gone, you may as well be in the ground. Sure, you'll get less time for it, but don't give it up completely. Enjoy! You're young!

yournamehere 04-21-2004 08:01 PM

Just remember - having another birthday sure beats the alternative.

Sounds to me like you're not facing any major problems - you're young, starting a new life in a new city, and in a relationship that's lasted 3 years (so it may not last forever - welcome to the club!). If that's as bad as it gets, you're better off than most.

Trust me - you've got worse birthdays ahead. Enjoy this one.

Lol, i don't doubt that at all!

God of Thunder 04-22-2004 03:13 AM

It's been said that age is just a number, and now that I'm older (I'll be 35 this year) I tend to agree.

Anymore I really don't care about the presents as much as I do about spending the day with family. My sister lives on the other side of the state and I don't get to see her much.

Don't sweat the birthday stuff much and do like everyone here says, just enjoy the day and have fun.

And, if any of my family reads this post, I was kidding about the present thing. I want lots of gifts

Nancy 04-22-2004 05:13 AM

*sigh* If only I could afford a round-trip ticket to Vancouver. I'd make your birthday quite unforgettable N! *rrrrrrrr*, hehehe :D

It's nice with surprises arranged by family and friends on your birthday but have you ever tried demanding things from them like which restaurent you'll eat at and stuff you'd like to do etc. so your birthday will go like you want it to? Just a thought...

I sure hope your birthday will be great N! *hugs* :icare:

Redgirl 04-22-2004 08:10 AM

Back when I was 19 I was still having great birthdays! Where everyone still made a big deal out of them. Sorry your's is looking sucky. I just turned 28 on the 20th and it was the first birthday that I actually forgot about until the day before. So people are right about that, you start to just ignore them after a while.

Haven't gotten to the "dread them" state yet, but that's because after next year I'm not having anymore. :) So what's to dread about being 29 forever?

Happy early birthday- at least go have a couple of shots!

guthmund 04-22-2004 10:24 AM

I'm sorry to hear you so depressed about your birthday.

It's just like any other day. If you pile dreams and and pin your hopes on just one day, you're bound to be disappointed. One day simply cannot live up the expectations.

Therefore, treat everyday as your birthday and smile until your face hurts. :)

bparker805 04-22-2004 10:59 AM

I have found it beneficial to myself to plan my own birthday party. When I do this, there is no way in hell that I am going to let myself down on my favorite day of the year. If others want to come along for the ride, that's great! but I don't expect anything out of anybody. That way they will never let me down. Make it your day and do what you want! And if there is something that you want or expect out of your friends, let them know. I usually start telling my friends about silly little things that I am interested in about 3 weeks before my bday. That way they have an idea and I hopefully wan't get something that I don't want... :D

NoLa 04-22-2004 01:01 PM

My 21st is coming up in less then 2 months... woot!

bernadette 04-22-2004 01:36 PM

my birthday is tomorrow & i am going to be a whole lot older than 19... *sigh*

over the years i've come to accept that really it's just another day & i am thankful just to see the day.

i know exactly what to expect tomorrow:
hubby will come home a little bit earlier than usual. hooray!
he will bring me roses, probably a coral color (my fav).
he'll get me a card with a neat picture, not an ordinary hallmark b-day card & he'll write sweet words of his own inside.
then we'll go out for dinner.

and that'll be it. that's how it's been for several years. and it's plenty good enough.

oh yeah, my friends & family will send me snail mail cards & e-cards. already rec'd a few e-cards.

happy (early) birthday, fallenangel.
don't expect anything & you won't be disappointed.
be happy you're alive & well.
appreciate the small stuff.
april is a lovely time of the year.
open the windows, put on your favorite music & dance a little bit! :)
