So nobody but my mother remembered my birthday...

...yet I don't care.

Why do birthdays become more irrelevant as you get older?

Nancy 04-14-2004 11:35 AM

I think you just get less egoistic over the years which isn't a bad thing at all

Nancy 04-14-2004 11:36 AM

oh hey: happy birthday! :D

moonstrucksoul 04-14-2004 11:37 AM

happy birthday- one day late.::)

Cynthetiq 04-14-2004 11:45 AM

because they come faster and faster every year...

Fenton-J-Cool 04-14-2004 11:50 AM

Amen to that Cyn.

I've also noticed Christmas loses a lot of it's original lustre. It used to be, at the risk of sounding like an idiot, a 'magic' time of year, where everyone just seemed to get along for the two weeks before and after it. Now, however, it's just another time of year until Christmas day, and even then we don't make that big of a deal about it.

Cynthetiq 04-14-2004 12:05 PM

oh crap... forgot to say happy birthday.

water_boy1999 04-14-2004 12:14 PM

left home when I was 15, birthday was nothing a thing for me, so after I got married at 30, and forgot about my wife's birthday shortly after that, you can only imagine the kind of doodoo I was in...

Charlatan 04-14-2004 12:42 PM

I try not to think about my birthday as it means I am one more year closer to old age...

That said, I like it when my wife and son remember.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!

We're sorry. Will you forgive us?

There's so many frickin' bdays to keep track of this month...........

Rodney 04-14-2004 01:17 PM

Why don't birthdays matter as you get older? No more good presents, that's why :-). Kids wouldn't give a shit about birthdays if other people (ie, parents with presents to give) didn't make a big deal about it. When you get older, you can buy your own damn presents any day of the year, so what's special about birthdays?

That's kind of cynical, but that's the way I feel. Birthdays are good if somebody uses yours as a way of expressing love for you, or vice versa; but too often it's just another occasion where everyone's going through the motions.

As for birthdays as a grim reminder of mortality, I don't see it that way. Rather, they're a cheery reminder that I'm still here. As for eternal youth, you'll find that nowhere in your contract.

Yeah of course, I didn't put my birthday in my profile, so it's not surprising you didn't notice :P

Thanks for all the greetings, although I should point out, it was today (14th) not yesterday.

You forgot your own birthday?

Fremen 04-14-2004 02:12 PM

You're the man now, 'dog!

Happy b-day, flamingdog. :D

Sledge 04-14-2004 03:53 PM

You don't have anything left to look forward to once you pass 21. If, like, you got a shiny new right every year, I think people would be a lot happier with growing older.

greytone 04-14-2004 05:09 PM

Happy Birthday, even if I am a little late.

oberon 04-14-2004 09:37 PM

Yeah, after 21 there's not really much very useful that comes with age. Except perhaps knowledge, experience, & understanding.

Oh yeah. And you get to rent cars when you're 25. Whoopee doo. ;)

flamingdog 04-15-2004 11:13 AM

Heh, thanks again everyone. The marquee made me smile.

I don't think I peaked with 21, I just don't give a shit about my birthday. It feels weird though, some people around me, esp at work, seem to care a lot more than I do.

skysooner 04-15-2004 01:53 PM

At 38, I don't want parties or even really cards (except from my wife). I prefer to celebrate it in silence. I'm only as old as I feel (which isn't all that old thank goodness).
