dip?
is there anybody out here that dips, or chews tobacco... i'm just curious here..
|
my roomate does it every so often... I find the smell horrible and have to leave the room when he's doing it.
|
HOOOboy,
I'll just say no. If I have a choice, I almost prefer to be around smokers. |
Last summer I had a few friends who were really into it.
Since I've moved to college I see alot more people walking around the hall carrying their dip bottles...disgusting. |
Nope. I don't know anyone who does either. But, I am the only person in my group of freinds who doesn't smoke cigs. I do however enjoy a fine cigar every now and then:D
|
There's a strange nordic/eastern european thing of putting tobacco filled pouches up between you lip and your gum, giving you a speed-like rush so i'm told.
How do you think that up? "'ere, Nigel, I just had a f'kin' brainwave... get me them tea bags... and those 20 king size. Fuck, this is gonna be HUGE!" |
I smoke. If I chewed and smoked at the same time I would die.
That and mouth cancer is gross. I prefer my good ol' lung cancer. |
What exactly does 'dipping' and dip bottles mean?

My buddy dips, but he uses a pop can of some sort to hide is juice. |
IMO - As nasty as smoking. I know more people with health problems due to smoking, but a few chewers had some nasty oral surgery. One of them got a henious infection because he dipped on the way home from the dentist. The dentist got repremanded for not briefing him about tobacco before the surgery.
|
As disgusting as smoking. Didn't know it was called dipping, though. Each to their own, I guess.
|
I've known a few people who were into the habit. In a way, I consider it FAR more disgusting than smoking. I won't say 'eww gross' .. I just wont talk to you.
|
I believe here in the US we use snuff for dipping. Snuffing is not popular here as in other places in the world so we call it dip.
People who chew or dip spit because if they swallow the spit they may get a over dose of nicotine and become nauseous and puke. |

It does not give you any speedlike rush at all, it is still the same nicotine rush you get from smoking. Although in higher dosage than from inhaling tobbaco smoke. In essence it is still just tobbaco. It tastes pretty odd and it takes some time getting used to, but once your'e in the addiction is stronger than from smoking. There are many myths that the anti tobbacu movements here in Sweden have spread about it like, it is filled with shards of glass, there is arsenic added to it etc. but most of it is just FUD-tactics. There has even been claims that it causes mouth cancer like chewing tobbaco but in the 20 or so years there have been reaserch on it not one single scrap of evidence supports that claim. By Swedish doctors it is called the "better of two evils" as Snus doesn't affect your physical preformance like smoking does and there is no proof that it can cause cancer. Though in my opinion, tobbaco in all its forms are a plague upon mankind and shoud be forbidden before any more kids becomes slaves under it. |
My uncle used to chew snoose (dono how you spell it) and spit into a soda can in his car. One time my aunt was driving his car and thought a swig of pepsi would hit the spot....
She turned such a shade of green. That was the end of chewing. |
A friend of mine did for about 2 months. If he was stilling "dipping" I would show him those pics Hanxter posted...yikes
|
yeah those pictures that were posted are defiantely worst case scenerios. i've been dipping for 3 years now,. and i plan to keep dipping for a few more. i am going to quit one day. but as for, it's still the love of my life.
|
I used to dip back in high school. I really enjoyed it but it made my jums and lips burn after a while. It was alos getting to be a very expensive habit. I think a can of Skoal goes for almost $6 nowadays.
Sidenote: I was recently on a scavenger hunt and one of the things on the list was to put an entire can of Skoal in my mouth. NO heitation whatsoever. Wintergreen long cut straight to the mouth. And that was not the strangest thing on the list. |
I have done it before. I think its harder to quit dipping over quitting cigerettes. Plus in my experience, the buzz was alot stronger. Its just gross, i mean, spitting into something for 1/2 hr. Wow, thats nice.
|
I have been around people who have dipped my entire life. I tried Copenhagen one August afternoon while cutting grass and it knocked me off my skids for about half an hour.
The guy who got me to try it had oral surgery to try and keep his bottom teeth but he still lost them in the end. It seems the tobacco ate his gums away and he could just push his lower teeth out. Nasty, Nasty stuff. I wouldn't touch it on a bet. |
a big no thanks to tobacco. I've never chewed and don't intend to try it. I've had a cigar on special occasions but more for the taste than anything else.
|
I chew about a can of Skoal stright a DAY in the summer when i ride four wheelers and dirt bikes with my friends. ive cut down a lot with the cold weather but now its geting warmer and im out side more im start to pick it back up more :-/
|
As you can tell by my name I dip. Now after reading this thread I feel like the nastiest person on the planet, lol, but I started in high school and it just grabbed a hold of me. Tried quitting numerous times but it just didn’t work out.
|
ive only known 1 person that dipped... nastiest person i ever met... i think its an expensive nasty habbit(smoking aswell)
but you people shouldnt care if anyone thinks that it is gross or worry about cancer. you only live once, do what makes u feel good, just dont make me smell your nasty self. |
Yes I dip, for about a year now. Started in High School, during my study hall a couple of my buddies who always did it in school hooked me up with one so we could do it in the library. It was pretty fuckin sweet the first month or so but now it doesnt do much yet I'm still addicted.
Once in awhile I"ll get the good ole buzz from it. Its definatly more buzz than cigs is. I've been trying to quit for 2-3 months now. I cut back to about 2 cans a week. I was up to 1 can a day at one point. As for the people who think it "stinks" Honestly you can't smell the shit unless your like 2 inches from my mouth. And anyone respectful is gonna have a bottle you can't see the spit in. |
Try swallowing instead of spitting

We just don't do that here, at all. |
i smoke but if i am out or at a place where i can smoke, ill take a dip or 2 from time to time
|
I do. I wish I didn't. Started when I was 9 and am turning 30 this year. I have tried to quit but it is much more difficult than smoking. One "chew" is 3 times as addictive and 10 times as powerful as one cigarette. In July, when I turn 30, I am going to give it my best effort to quit. I have no problems with my lips, gums, or teeth. I have always been extremely carefule and timely when it comes to brushing my teeth so I don't see any bad signs yet......yet.
Wish me luck! |
Knowing what I know now and seeing pictures / reading information about smoking / dipping etc I dont understand why anyone would ever start, I tried one cigarette in my entire life, took half the cig in one drag and never did it again.

I've done it for years, and am currently into my second week without it. I've "quit" twice before for more than a couple of months. Hopefully the third time's the charm. I've heard different numbers for a comparison of dip vs. cigarettes, but I think it varies with how big a dip, whether you swallow or not, etc.. Basically, one dip is equal to several cigarettes. Big dips of Copengagen are equal to many cigarettes. Man, I miss it. I started in High School, because it was rebellious. Through college, I'd do it when studying, out with the guys, or bored in the dorm. It didn't make you smell bad like cigarettes. I'd quit after college, cause I knew I would'nt be drinking like that in the real world, I'd quit dipping too when I grew up. Then law school was alot more stressfull and much more studying. Then I'd quit after I took the bar exam. Talk about stress, I needed it like I've never needed it before! So i took it and quit, until I started worrying about the bar results. And I thought taking the bar was stressful! Sure I "knew" I'd passed, just like everyone else, but there was that nagging creeping fear. I started again. I'd quit when I entered the real world and was a real lawyer. But in the real world, talk about stress?! real money, not grades are on the line! long hours, long car trips, Nights in the office prepping, etc.. Besides, lots of people do it, and I can swallow it if I need to to hide this somewhat embarassing habit. Well, it was time. I've already gained 5 pounds, and am sick and tired of sunflower seeds, beef jerky, and this crap called "Bacc-off" My mouth hurts more now than it ever did. My skin is crawling, and I really miss it. It's like saying goodbye to an old friend! I still want the stuff. It sucks!! |
Siding with Hal on this one. I find it 12032183x more disgusting then smoking, and I try not to communicate or hang with smokers. I really think I'm allergic to smoke, and it was hard during highschool 'cause the bong really was appealing but now it's different. I can stand the smell of 'dip' but it's not the most inviting scent, and I could only imagine the disgust of kissing someone who dips. Cigarette smoke is a bad enough flavor to have on the lips, let alone peppermint-menthol-tobacco.
Plus, I like my gums, and teeth, and mouth and everything. |
Way more gross than smoking. I mean it's like watching someone puke fecal matter in small amounts constantly into a container and carry it around. I'd rather be around smoke anyday.
|
It's great! I used to smoke, drink, and dip all at the same time. I was really cool. Ok enough sarcasm. It's a really nasty habit. It get in between your teeth, makes yiour breat smell like hell, and causes mouth and throat cancer. Dippers keep otolaryngeal oncologists in business though. Tip, if doing it, stop.

And while tobacco by itself may not contain arsenic, large tobacco companies (including Philip Morris, makers of Marlboro) add a variety of different chemicals proven to cause cancer in laboratory tests. http://www.mnmed.org/publications/Mn...arch/Jones.cfm So, it might as well be arsenic. |
Stay strong Dy156 You have my support!!!!

Alas, it's western Oklahoma, I know women that dip. Several people dip here in the office. You find cups on the desks with wadded up paper towels in them used for spit cups.
You really haven't been repulsed by a women until one spits next to your boots. How anyone could kiss something like that is beyond me. (Spitting ON your boots is still a hanging offense in these parts I believe). |
I used to for a time while I was in the Army (hey, everybody else does it, so it can't be THAT bad, right?).
I remember a time when our 1st sergent mistook someone's spit cup for his cup of coffee....needless to say, he wasn't a happy camper that day. |
I honestly don't know anyone who does this. I'm amazed there are so many who do. It's a disgusting thought, and this is coming from a smoker.
|
smoking ruins your lungs, you can live with dentures but you cant live without lungs. Ive been dippin for about 3 years now. I love it, i have a dip every other day or so. I used to dip all the time, i went through 2 cans of Cope in less then a week. Everyone has their own bad habits and tobacco is no different. and, Skoal offers many new flavors that taste great. to all you people that think that dip is an unforgivable social sin, try it. Try either apple, peach, or frost blend.. they taste GREAT and the buzz is amazing.
|
I'm from rural West Virginia, so I know QUITE a few people that dip from all walks of life.
I don't really dip anymore, but I did for quite some time. I tried it, mostly because I was curious as to why in the hell people would even do it (I thought it was pretty nasty). Once I found out that it could give me a buzz again (I was pretty jaded, being a smoker) I decided to do it every now-and-then when I was around a certain crowd or wasn't able to smoke. Once I moved back in with my parents, it became a lot more often, since I wasn't able to get out to smoke as often as I'd like. I ended up moving entirely to snuff for a few months, but I've since quit. Honestly, it's a bad choice. It can fuck up your teeth, your gums, your health...hell, it can even kill you. But I'll be damned if that cherry long-cut Skoal isn't one of the most delicious things I ever tried. |
well, as an australian, i believe i can safely say, hardly anyone in australia does this... i barely know what you guys are talking about.. i mean, i've seen those football coaches etc. do it in american movies, oh and, bills brother in kill bill 2 does it i believe... but apart from that.. nothing.. i mean, i'm not even sure if you can buy it over here.. Sounds like a very weird and disgusting habit... but, its got to have a positive side to it? i mean, you're not inhaling smoke...

i do it every once in a while when i get a free half can from skoal at local concerts. i dont see how its any more disgusting than smoking really. elitism in the tobacco ranks? the buzz (which is why you people started tobacco in the first place right?) is way better than a cig as you can actually feel it. edit- i didnt realize this was yet another bumped super old thread. |
i dip as well but on a very unfrequent basis, i only do it at work beacuse overnights at a job is very boring, and i hate smoking.
plus i am surrounded by many people that chew so it is very accepted in my workplace my firends i live with chew as well but they chew 10-15 more times a day than me and leave there bottles everywhere, i usually get stuck cleaning them up but i will be quitting, i have decreaseed my usage massively over the last few months, i knew it was time to quit when i realized i dont get that much of a buzz anymore from it, now its just a bad habit |

I'd like to offer you a small bit of perspective that may help you, it did me. I started smoking at 20, and I'm not regularly smoking now at 27. It took me from 25/most of 26 to stop. I don't "socially smoke" or "smoke when I drink" like 1000 "light" smokers qualify their "not smoking/quitting" with. However, today I had one. Bummed of a pal, first one in.....5 weeks? Something like that. Before that I don't think I had one for 8 weeks. You get the idea. My reasoning (and my point): I did not quit smoking. I am not a non-smoker. I’m a smoker who is not smoking. I hope that doesn’t sound stupid, but I’m trying to differentiate between “quitting” a problem, and dealing with one. I am still a smoker. I still want smokes. I still crave them. But, it’s not a daily or even weekly thing. Every once in a great while, I even indulge. Sometimes, it’s not cool because I’ll find myself going from 1…to 1 a day for a week. That is lessening a lot with time, thank goodness. The last time was when my sister, a smoker, stayed with us for a week. My dumb ass smoked at least one a day with her that week. The next week really sucked, but I never bought a pack; and, didn’t bum one. Alcoholics have the right idea when they admit it's an addiction. Alcoholics’ first step is to admit an addiction, and then they come to terms with having that addiction as part of them. It’s not something you “quit,” and I don’t think “quitting” is a good thing for smokers either. You don’t quit your addiction. You can stop indulging it on a regular basis though. It’s a real bitch, but you can do it. Just don’t think you’re going to “quit.” It’s the wrong frame of mind. You can stop, but you can’t quit. The addiction will still be there, and it doesn’t quit. You deal with it, and choose to stop indulging it. Now, because I’m sooo far off topic (though they’re related!!) allow me to say that dip, dipping, is just freakin disgusting. I know how gross smoking is. Dipping takes that to the next level. It’s just…nasty. |
My brother does it. He never did before he went into the army. I guess there is a lot of peer pressure for "dipping" in the army.
|
Hubby dipped for years while in the Marines. He started because it would help him stay awake during overnight training/guard duty, and since everyone else in the Corps either smokes or dips (well, almost everyone it seems), and he was always being offered dip or smokes, he took up dipping (he hates smoking, go figure). He quit about a year ago and I'm very proud, I know it's a hard habit to break.
As for it being disgusting...it's not really worse than smoking...neither are pleasant. It really doesn't stink though, unless you don't get rid of your spit container immediately...now THAT is disgusting. |
I tried it once at a Skoal booth at a drag race. They gave me a sample of their light, minty fresh, candied up version of tobacco. It was absolutely the nastiest thing I have ever been around in my life. I can't even imagine how disgusting the harder stuff is. I don't know how someone could use that crap long enough to get addicted. Also I had a roommate in college that dipped and the nasty bastard and his friends would spit into beer bottles and leave the uncapped beer bottles laying around where they invevitably got knocked over and leaked on the carpet. I had to pay part of the cost of replacing that carpet.
