Looking young

People keep telling me I look 'very young', is this a good/bad thing? how?

jay-g 03-24-2004 10:12 PM

I would have to say, its better than being told you look old and weathered. Now that you mention it, you do look young.

Mojo_PeiPei 03-24-2004 10:16 PM

I'm 19 and some guy at a party the other week said I look like a 12 year old.

I'll be laughing when everyone else is aging and I still have my youthful good looks.

03-24-2004 10:22 PM

why wouldn't it be a good thing? When you're 70, you'll look 40 or 50. I get the same comments. I'm 24 but people always say I look 17 or something- ya, it's wierd and unpleasant right now but I've got "young" genes, yet I also appreciate it.

tricks 03-24-2004 10:29 PM

It's a good thing. You can lull people with your young, naive looks then wow them with your years of worldly knowledge and experiences.

KellyC 03-25-2004 01:53 AM

Very good thing. I'm in the same boat with you. The only thing that pisses me off is those damn attendants kept asking me for ID everytime I went to see a rated R movie, even though I go to the same one almost on a weekly basis.

And what others said.

AfterBurn 03-25-2004 04:30 AM

I'm a guy though...

skysooner 03-25-2004 07:16 AM

It is good now. I am 38 now and for years looked younger than my years. When I had gained quite a bit of weight I didn't hear this anymore. People would pretty much guess right on my age. Now that I have lost 80 lbs, people are saying I look younger. I just kind of refound what I used to have. I would rather look youthful than older at this point in my life.

Junchbailey 03-25-2004 07:41 AM

Just the other day I had someone say something to the effect of:
"Why would you get married, you're only what, 16?" I'm actually 23. I usually don't mind if people thing I look young for my age, but when I have to show ID at Wal-mart for an R-rated movie, that annoys me a little.

SabrinaFair 03-25-2004 08:02 AM

People always tell me I look and/or act older than my 20 years...which I usually think is a good thing because I usually don't get carded for drinks. But...when I'm 40, am I going to still look "older than my age?" I think I'd rather be in your position....American society values youth so much.

lurkette 03-25-2004 09:53 AM

It depends on context. When I was teaching college students and was only a few years older than they were, looking young (I looked about 17 at the time) was a distinct disadvantage. It's very cliche, but since I turned 30 and started worrying about my "lost youth" I don't mind so much that people think I'm in my early 20s. I got carded the other night to buy a margarita and the waitress wouldn't believe I was 31. Felt good :)

lisa 03-25-2004 10:08 AM

I've just turned 23, but I don't look 23 at all...

I think I look a lot younger, but that has got a lot to do with the way I dress, or the not waring of make-up, jewelry etc... I guess i could look a lot older, but, still being a student, and being lazy by nature, I don't really bother that much about my appearances...

Most of the time i don't really mind it, that i look younger; but when I see little 16-year old girls nowadays who look so much better than i do, with real cool clothes, nice make-up, great hairdo and stuff that makes thém look so much more feminine than myself... that sometimes can upset me... (but still, not longer than 10 minutes or so  )

AfterBurn 03-25-2004 10:47 AM

Heh don't feel bad, I'm a guy and I look feminine and I had a few people ask me if I wear make up before :S (I don't)

spook75 03-25-2004 11:06 AM

I have always looked younger than my age, but now that I am 28 things are returning to equilibrium; I finally am looking my age. Hell, I don't even get carded for booze anymore, which is really sad for me.

laconic1 03-25-2004 11:30 AM

I used to look really young for my age, until I turned 21. Then my hair started going gray and I have aged about 15 years in the past three or four years, and now I can pass for 30 even though I'm only 24. Enjoy looking young while you can.

World's King 03-25-2004 11:45 AM

I look young too.

My mother will turn 48 in a few days but you would swear she was in her mid-30s. It runs in the fanily.

glasscutter43 03-25-2004 11:48 AM

I have shoes older than most of you. Being thought of as younger than I am (45) is always welcome.

Midnight_Son 03-25-2004 12:02 PM

HEY! I'm one those people!! ha-ha
I didn't mean it in a bad way at all....you look young, be happy!

enjoy it man, I'm 32 and still get carded for beer every now and then. I like it, I hate to think of myself as being "old".

twilightfoix 03-25-2004 12:18 PM

yep same here, 18 and people say i look 15-16, get carded everytime i buy a pack of cig's. i won't mind though when i'm 40 and can still pick up a girl who's 30. oh yeah, pimp on, pimp on

I have the same problem Sabrina. Sure its nice to be thought of as older now, but I doubt I'll like it in a few years. :(

So, enjoy your youthful looks, it's a good thing! :)

BoCo 03-26-2004 07:04 AM

I'm nearly 28 and most people thing I'm about 21 or 22.

I can live with that. :)

troit 03-26-2004 07:14 AM

Better to look 35 at 50 than 50 at 35....

Cynthetiq 03-26-2004 07:48 AM

Only issues happen when it hampers or hinders getting to knock boots with someone. :)

Bleed Me Dry 03-26-2004 04:30 PM

I'm 24 and look about 18. I used to hate it, but the older you get the better it starts to sound.

viejo gringo 03-26-2004 06:56 PM

It's a good thing, but I can tell you that when you are 70 you WILL NOT look 50....been there done that..

but, you are only as old as you feel, and

age is not a matter of time, just a matter of the mind....

and tonight I am dragging....:D

The_wall 03-27-2004 01:10 PM

I actually look older then my actual age, I'm 19 but can buy beer ;)

MaGlC_MaN 03-27-2004 02:58 PM

i've been told i look young so many times.. i hate it. but yea, all i can hope for is that when i'm like 40 - 50 i'll still be able to pick up the hotties with my 20 - 30 looks ;)

Munku 03-27-2004 07:31 PM

If anyone tells you it's all fine and dandy.. It's not. Try being 18, look 15, Never had a girlfriend, picked on in school. Like looking young is theg reatest thing in the world. not to mention I'm skinny as a twig. It sucks.

soccerchamp76 03-27-2004 11:32 PM

I am 18, and I look around 12-13. It DOES suck now as some people do not believe that I am 18, sort of embarassing at times too. Always get carded for movies, and when i bought a knife the guy looked at my ID and asked me a question to make sure the info was correct. The only time it would help is if i am 30 and i look 24.....that could seriously help my social agenda but for now it doesn't help at all.

mingusfingers 03-27-2004 11:43 PM

I've got that. I hate it now, I guess it will get better.

Don't worry, you keep buying those smokes and you'll look older than you are before too long;)

I was ID'd for quite a few years after turning 19 (drinking age here), it annoyed me then, but it's better to look young than old.

Rodney 03-29-2004 08:23 PM

A lot of it is facial structure. If you've got small or delicate facial features, and are slender or skinny to boot, people will think you're younger than you are. Facial features naturally enlarge as you get older -- bigger nose, bigger chin, wider face -- so those of you who start with delicate features will in fact always look younger than your peers, all other things being equal (smoking and eating habits, etc., and of course baldness).

People who have naturally bold features -- big chins, big noses, big jaws -- always look older or more mature than their age (your choice of terms), especially in their teens.

Of course, that's not all of it, especially as you get older. I'm 48, male, and people think I'm -- well, not 35 or anything, but no more than 40. In part that's because I had those delicate features to start, have kept myself in moderately good shape, and have almost no gray in my hair (and still have most of my hair, too.) When a younger-looking guy starts to look older, usually gray hair, baldness, and weight are the culprit. When you see a picture of some politician in the news, most of them except the obvious fitness freaks look to be about 55 or 60, because they're all overweight with three chins, mostly balding, and have a lot of wear on them from the long hours. But a lot of these guys are in their early 40s. They just haven't taken care of themselves -- they're too busy taking meetings and drinking with lobbyists.

WarWagon 03-29-2004 08:54 PM

Dont feel so bad, one of the girls here at school looks like one of the Olsen twins from a few years ago.

Toecutter 03-29-2004 08:59 PM

I'm almost 30, and i could easily pass for being between 18 or 21. :-( Hey, i wonder if there are any casting calls for any new teen dramas going on some where!?!?!

Dant0007 03-29-2004 10:57 PM

It's always a good thing, hands down. Unless you're 5 and they say you look like an infant.

Bobaphat 03-29-2004 11:35 PM

I was just told by a woman I work with that she thought I was 36 or 37. I am 27, there are worse things than looking young I guess
