St. Patricks day

Does anyone here do anything special for St. Patricks day besides getting drunk?

Redjake 03-15-2004 09:04 AM

I waste all the fuckers that think it's funny to pinch you if you aren't wearing green

moonstrucksoul 03-15-2004 09:29 AM

as someone with some Irish heritage, I can't stand the fact that everyone uses St. Patrick's day as an excuse to go out and get drunk. Maybe it's because i rarely drink to begin with, but it seems absurd just to get loaded because it's a religious holiday in Ireland.

I wonder if all those snakes ever got back into Ireland...

LOL, me too.

I'm a big pale guy with red hair. When you're that Irish you don't need to wear any fucking green.

I don't really do anything special, but in general I find it's a good day to have a beer, sing a bawdy song, and make new friends. I'm not going to go off the handle this year (Last year I was carted home drunk from the bar at 8:30, by total strangers). I still plan on having a pint or two and relaxing a bit.

World's King 03-15-2004 11:52 AM

I drink, celebrate being Irish, and have amazing drunken limp dicked sex.

I usually listen to the Electrics all day, but I can't find my tape this year....grrrr....

spook75 03-15-2004 02:17 PM

I may this year, that is if my g/f goes with me. Otherwise, I will stay home and study.

toiletraccoon 03-15-2004 03:16 PM

I hit up all the local parades the few weekends before and then on st patricks day i usually go out for a few drinks.

VitaminH 03-15-2004 03:56 PM

I have a big test on thursday. Damn my professors. I want green beer!

Mephisto2 03-15-2004 04:42 PM

Unlike most "Irish" posters here, I really am Irish. :-)

And yes I tend to go out and celebrate because I live overseas (Sydney). Does that mean getting drunk? I'm afraid so. Say what you want, but we like to have a few beers and Irish social life revolves around the pub.

Back home, St Patrick's day is, officially, a religious holiday but don't kid yourself. It's not as if droves of people go off to Mass or anything. St Patrick's Day was an American invention after all... :-) The whole parade thing etc.

We now have parades in Ireland (since the 50's or 60's I think), and most people who go do so to bring their kids. It's not such a big deal back home.

And, for the record, no one in Ireland ever says things like "Kiss me, I'm Irish" or "May the road rise with you" (ARRGFGHH!!!), or "May God hold you in the palm of his hand" (GRRR!!)... or any other of that syrupy Hollywood Oirish crap.

The most you'll hear is "Cheers" or if there's a visitor from overseas we MIGHT say "Slainte".

My fraternity is taking it as an excuse to have a party. Unfortunately, I dont much like big parties, am not in the mood for one, and dont want to clean up afterwards. Not to mention I have class the next day so I have to get up early.

sexymama 03-15-2004 05:19 PM

This is silly, but every year that I teach Kindergarten, I have the little guys build traps. I then turn the room upside down, replacing all the pens with green pens and making all the crayons green. We have a fun time looking for the leprechaun.

But getting drunk, never do, don't plan on doing it soon.

bernadette 03-15-2004 05:34 PM

in the past i've gone out drinking with friends in search of green beer.
one year we even had a st. paddys day party at our home. we even made corn beef & cabbage, even though i don't like cornbeef & hubby hates cabbage.

this year we'll do nothing except sit home & watch some tv same as any other ordinary night of the year.

i don't like to wear green. if you want to pinch me for that, be prepared to get smacked.

scrappmittens 03-15-2004 06:12 PM

yeah nothing.......because dont really care about it

Chingal0 03-15-2004 07:27 PM

St. Patricks Day is good fun around here, not sure what is happening this year but it will probably be a good time. I had the traditional corned beef and cabbage last night accompanied with a huge party and the usual puking of nasty shit. I feel great today tho, and am ready to party on the day of.

Oh ya, I guess I fall into the distinct category of 'Irish' as Mr. Mephisto put it, but I can still void myself of green material, even tho I am wearing a green shirt now.. Hmphfff

I get wasted for St. Patrick's Day...

"Its saint patty's day, everyones irish!"

homerhop 03-16-2004 01:14 AM

It doesnt matter if you are a Paddy or a plastic Paddy. Its a day to have some fun with your family go watch the parades.
As with all celebrations there are some ;) who might get a little bit merry but what the heck its our national Saint and we celebrated it world wide.

3leggedfrog 03-16-2004 07:28 PM

it's funnier when you pinch them back...or 'accidently' punch them in the face. whichever comes first :D

Mephisto2 03-16-2004 09:36 PM

Well, it's St Patrick's Day today in Australia and I'm going home soon to my Australian wife who is making me Beef & Guinness Pie. My job is to prepare the Colcannon.

I'm also looking forward to the four cans of draught Guinness sitting in my fridge. To make things better, I'm back off to the Auld Country in a month, so I get to taste the real thing again! And, as every good Irishman will tell you with a tear in his eyes, I get to enjoy "de Mudder's" cooking again.

As the song goes...

Ring a ring a rosie,
As the light declines,
I remember Dublin city,
In the rare oul times...

Mr Mephisto (getting all misty eyed and nostalgic)

Fearless_Hyena 03-17-2004 05:38 PM

We have a habit of singing....:D

The Irish Rover

On the Fourth of July, 1806
We set sail from the sweet cohb of Cork
We were sailing away with a cargo of bricks
For the Grand City Hall in New York
'Twas a wonderful craft
She was rigged fore and aft
And oh, how the wild wind drove her
She stood several blasts
She had twenty seven masts
And they called her The Irish Rover

We had one million bags of the best Sligo rags
We had two million barrels of stone
We had three million sides of old blind horses hides
We had four million barrels of bones
We had five million hogs
And six million dogs
Seven million barrels of porter
We had eight million bales of old nanny-goats' tails
In the hold of the Irish Rover

There was awl Mickey Coote
Who played hard on his flute
And the ladies lined up for a set
He was tootlin' with skill
For each sparkling quadrille
Though the dancers were fluther'd and bet
With his smart witty talk
He was cock of the walk
As he rolled the dames under and over
They all knew at a glance
When he took up his stance
That he sailed in The Irish Rover

There was Barney McGee
From the banks of the Lee
There was Hogan from County Tyrone
There was Johnny McGurk
Who was scared stiff of work
And a man from Westmeath called Malone
There was Slugger O'Toole
Who was drunk as a rule
And Fighting Bill Tracy from Dover
And your man, Mick McCann
From the banks of the Bann
Was the skipper of the Irish Rover

For a sailor it's always a bother in life
It's so lonesome by night and day
That he longs for the shore
And a charming young whore
Who will melt all his troubles away
Oh, the noise and the rout
Swillin' poitin and stout
For him soon the torment's over
Of the love of a maid
He is never afraid
An old salt from the Irish Rover

We had sailed seven years
When the measles broke out
And the ship lost its way in the fog
And that whale of a crew
Was reduced down to two
Just myself and the Captain's old dog
Then the ship struck a rock
Oh Lord! what a shock
The bulkhead was turned right over
Turned nine times around
And the poor old dog was drowned
I'm the last of The Irish Rover

World's King 03-17-2004 07:18 PM

HURRAY FOR GREEN BEER ANDS GUINNESS!!!

heh a great night. God bless the irish!

Ripp3r 03-18-2004 01:19 AM

As a citizen of Dublin (not irish btw) St patricks day was tons of fun ... lots, and lots of people in the streets, pissant drunk, overcrowded pubs with jolly laughter and general ambient noise... the occasional irish folksong, (best heard drunk for effect)

too bad I had to work all day and could only join in during the evening ... but good fun anyhow :)

Bring on the Guinness !!!!

default_i 03-18-2004 03:29 AM

I coincidintally wore a green shirt not knowing what the day was, and hence narrowly avoided a pinching. That was quite an adventure, let me tell ya'!

gnort 03-18-2004 09:02 AM

I wore a green shirt because I was working and had to :)

But I pretty much listened to the Dropkick Murphys (an Irish punk/ska band from Boston) all day.

Xell101 03-18-2004 12:47 PM

I want a St. Patrick's Day T-shirt involving dionysus.

InTeGrA77 03-19-2004 06:58 AM

Wore a ridiculous amount of green all day, ran, went home and had corned beef, cabbage, and taters!:D
