"I've been abducted?"

http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/...index.html
This 17 year old guy was surfing the net when he found a picture of himself at 3 years old on a missing children's website.

Quote:

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Authorities arrested the mother of a 17-year-old boy who saw his picture on a missing children's Web site and discovered that he was allegedly abducted from Canada 14 years ago.

Acting on a Canadian-issued warrant, U.S. marshals arrested Giselle-Marie Goudreault, 45, at her home in the San Fernando Valley. She was being held without bail until Canadian authorities can extradite her on child abduction charges, authorities said.

Goudreault "was shocked and very emotional" during the February 11 arrest, said Jimell Griffin, a deputy U.S. Marshall in Los Angeles. The boy's father had custody of his son, and Griffin said Goudreault did not return him after a court-ordered visit.

The teen, whose identity was not released, was immediately put in a foster home.

The boy spotted his own photo, taken when he was 3, on a Canadian missing children's Web site a few months ago and told a teacher about it, authorities said. The teacher contacted police, who then confirmed the story with Canadian authorities.

Griffin said although it was Goudreault's son who initiated contact with authorities, the youth was upset at his mother's arrest and tried to comfort her while she was being led away.

I soooo would have been like "Mom, you know that new car i want? Either you buy it for me...or you go to jail."

:D

Really though, i do feel sorry for the kid

Good god, man... she's all he knew as his mother.... can you imagine sending your own mother to jail? Biological or not, she raised him from 3 to 18.

Damn.

Why didn't the boys father try to find his son? Guessing he probably filed a missing persons report but 14 years ago, c'mon!

There's not much you can do about it.

He did filed a missing person report and as a result, the RCMP issued a Canada wide arrest warrent for the woman. You're dealing with a nation of 25 million people. Did you expect to be able actually track down someone within that country? Or even worse, track down that same person in a nation of even more people? And add that equation to the fact that the chances of finding a abducted person ever being found were pretty slim.

Do yourself a favour...google the net and find how many abduction and kidnapping that had a good ending. Now google the net and find out how many didn't. I will bet you a million buck that a lot of abduction case that didn't have a good ending outnumbers those that did.

Edit: Now consider the fact that 14 years ago, the media coverage of any abduction is not even anywhere near as powerful as it is today. Amber alert sure didn't exist back then. The internet existed back then but wasn't nowhere near as powerful as it is today. Media today are used to help inform people of an abduction that occurs and that is clearly shown in Samantha Smart case. She was found because some people who watched the news recongize her. If that 3 yrs old boy were walking on the same street as Samantha Smart were, nobody would recongize him...especially he was from another country.

My thoughts, exactly. I really don't know what i'd have done, were I in this kid's place. His entire world has just been blown to pieces. Everything that he has ever known, has ever been, is false.

Wasn't this same type of situation fictionalized on Law and Order, last season? The kid wanted to stay with his abductor "father", and wanted nothing to do with his biological family.

Yeah its totally bad man. Talk about living a lie.

The thing is you don't know whether the dad was horrible and the mother rescued him when he was achild or whether the mother was horrible to take him. I assume she must have been quite horrible if he went straight to a teacher and dobbed her in.

Kidnapping is still kidnapping it doesnt matter if its 5 weeks ago or 15 years ago. She still stole her son from his father who had custody.
Every case where there has been a period of time go by they always still arrest the person and charge them. A kid that is now 20 years old comes out and says soandso abused me when I was 5 they will go after that person and charge them. Doesnt matter that the person was only 20 at the time and is now 35 with a family and kids of their own.
It doesnt make it right. But I think there should be a time limit set. The least they can do is take it case by case and find out if it warrents further action. If the person is still 18 or under then something should be done about it. But as soon as they hit 19 or older I dont think its right that they can come forward and say I want to press charges on this person for this that and the other.

well at least the boy will be able to see his father again, i wonder what his his mom might have dne for the boy to take such action, why didn't he just say mom, 'i found out and i want to see my dad', or just try to get in contact with his dad first.

The boy didn't want his mother arrested. He merely told his teacher about the fact that he saw his photo. The teacher thought she was doing the right thing.

After 14 years, the entire custody decision should be reconsidered before action is taken, in my opinion. The kids life at that point might have been completely acceptable. The father could have changed dramatically.

The decision on who gets custody is often made be an over-worked or underpaid or poorly educated social worker with his/her own agenda. The judge rubber stamps the social worker's decision. It is often ill-considered and unjust. For the losing spouse to fight the decision legally can cost tens of thousands of dollars and take years.

I have been falsely accused of child abuse by an ex-spouse, so I know what it's like. My sister's husband once tried to kidnap his kids and my sister got in more trouble than him! My brothers and I even kidnapped my sister from the moonies. There's alot of shit that goes on, so don't pre-judge. Don't depend on social workers or the legal system to know what is "just".

I would think the boy is old enough now to choose with whom he will live. I feel sorry for the mother n this case.

I couldn't help but laugh a little. It's funny... you have to admit it's funny.

mystmarimatt 02-20-2004 03:12 PM

Didn't i see this on a Lifetime made-for-tv-movie?

Or like, 5?

macmanmike6100 02-21-2004 11:08 PM

That sucks for the kid. Before I start feeling bad that he sent his 3-to-18 mother to jail, though, I do wonder if she was a "good" mother at all. Who knows, but a weird story nonetheless.
