So ... my dog has terrible gas

and it makes my eyes water when she hangs out indoors. Any ideas? Can dogs have beano?

She hasn't changed food or anything, so I'm a bit lost for the sudden ... output.

It so cold outside so I don't think she needs to be out there right now.

StormBerlin 02-09-2004 10:40 AM

She might be sick. I know, doggy farts are the worste. But take her to the vet if it doesn't improve.

Confederate 02-09-2004 11:27 AM

yea it could easily be diet, I know the dog hasnt changed diets, but its biology could have changed, that's how it was with our dog, we had to change his diet till it went away

TheBrit 02-09-2004 12:42 PM

It stinks in more way than one. Dogs can't complain, it may be a health problem. Can you phone your vet and ask without a billion dollar dog?

PorscheBunny 02-09-2004 01:47 PM

I tried Beano my dog. It didn't help much until she was getting 4 times the human dosage.

Air freshener is much cheaper, that and stop feeding the dog hard-boiled eggs.

ratbastid 02-09-2004 03:46 PM

Enh. Just blame it on your brother or something.

Yeah I have to snort 4 beanos a day to keep my gas under control...

I actually had to look this information up for a patron at the library I work for not to long ago.

Mixing some low-fat yogurt in with the dogs normal food can cut the gas.

Our old dog's farts used to smell like Cheerios.. It was NASTY. Poor old Sandy. I loved that dog :(

Bamrak 02-09-2004 04:46 PM

A friend of mine would try to out stink his dog.. so far my friend has made the dog think he pooped on himself twice.. Sad situation, but extremely funny.

I think if Cherrios doesn't take exception at this, Juanvaldez will. http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/cwm/cwm/eek6.gif :D

Often eating bones will make them smell bad - you been giving the dog a bone?

tritium 02-09-2004 06:14 PM

She has a nylon bone, tuffrr, but would that really mess her up?

gabshu 02-09-2004 06:15 PM

I had an animal nutrition lecture today about the dog's GI tract, anyway. Try cutting out the fiber in his diet, if you give him feed that has more animal than plant products it can help. If you really want to be informed check out the National Research Counsil's guidelines. They publish these for livestock feed, they might also do it for dogs.

Nope, not unless the farts are smelling like nylon?

bernadette 02-09-2004 07:13 PM

we had an older dog who was very flatulent. at the pet store (at least at petco) in the vitamins section, there's a bottle of tablets you can buy. i forget the name now, but it really did help a lot.

i miss my good ol' stinky boy... i don't miss his farts, but i miss him.

Our dog gets really bad gas unless we feed her lamb and rice food rather than whatever other kind.

Since we now know this, she is much nicer to be around.

Nothing like a long car ride with a gassy puppy.

I am so glad to know that I am not the only one with this experience. I recently change them from a lamb and rice formula to that new Beneful. It no longer smells like cheerios but is much worse. But, they are eating better and happier, so I can live with it. Except when I wake up with one of them sleeping on the bed.

This thread is freakin hilarious!!! I don't know what to add to make it any more funny!

runawayfetus 02-10-2004 06:01 PM

HEHEHE. While funny, thats not really true. Like humans who chew alot of gum, dogs that chew bones tend to swallow a shitload of air causing mass evacuations of that air from the chocolate starfish. Take the dog off of the nylon bone and give it milkbones instead. You might also want to check with your Vet and see if shes lactose intolerant. Some dog foods have lactose added and if the dog is L.I. then that could be causing the stink. I know. I have a friend whos L.I. and I can hardly stand to be around him after hes has a bowl of cereal.

mingusfingers 02-10-2004 09:06 PM

Try changing the food, doing that usually helps.

meembo 02-11-2004 05:44 PM

Ventilator fans? I have lots of boys -- it helps

MR_WALLACE 02-12-2004 03:06 AM

Change his food. Try this brand it worked for my dog. http://www.hillspet.com/index.jsp

I'll never be able to look at Cheerios the same again.

Annabella 03-17-2004 09:45 AM

Send it to doctor..!

agball 03-17-2004 11:44 AM

I have an English Bulldog who's gas will make your eyes water and its hard not to gag when he lets loose one of his air biscuits. I have tried everything including beano and nothing seemed to work to well. I think its just the nature of the breed. Try the beano though, maybe it will work for you, it wont heart the dog. Happy Smelling!!

03-17-2004 11:47 AM

Change the dog's diet, fo sho.
Ask the vet what they suggest- sometimes dog food with corn in it can cause problems.
