Tax official's desk death unnoticed for two days

A tax official who died at his desk in Helsinki went unnoticed by colleagues for two days.

The man, a tax auditor in his 60s, died last Tuesday while checking tax returns.

But newspaper reports say no-one realised he was dead until Thursday.

The head of personnel at the office in the Finnish capital said the man's closest colleagues were out at meetings when he died.

He said everyone at the tax office was feeling dreadful - and procedures would have to be reviewed, says BBC News Online.

According to the Finnish tabloid newspaper Ilta-Sanomat, co-workers assumed the dead man was silently poring over returns.

There were about 100 other staff in the auditing department on the same floor the dead tax official worked on.

Next time you think someone is "silently poring over returns" for a couple of days straight, think of "Milton" - save a life!

For some odd ball reason, I sympathize with this ol fellow, yet think it is rather amusing. Poor Milton.

How did they notice, did the smell start to get to the co-workers or did everyone just not like him that much.

So, Milton just sat on his desk...for 2 straight day...holding still...

When I read that headline, the first thing I thought of was office space.

Wow, that is so sad. Talk about an impersonal office. :( I hope everyone who works there uses this as an oppurtunity to get to know each other and care a little more about their fellow co-workers.

And I feel for anyone that is that anonymous, that overlooked, that taken for granted.

Great! ABC News opened their morning radio newscast with it today...

If he was paid by the hour I think his family or estate should get credit for those extra 48 hours at time and a half.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that he had no family at home.

Tax season or no, I think I would notice if my s.o. wasn't home for 48 hours straight.

Well that is both shocking and kind of funny in that cynical sick way. But seriously folks, how does one not notice a dead body for 2 days?

That's why I'll never get an Office job, happy with the job I've got where my legs serve a purpose.

Well, what hollywood movies don't tell you is that after a person expires, their bladder and bowels lose muscle control (obviously) and urine and feces are spilled everywhere. Sitting down, it may have taken time to soak through as the buttocks would likely have been fairly clenched by the weight of the person. Also, after about 2 days the body would start to decay to the point of noticeable aroma.

That is unless someone just happened by his cubicle. And if this was your father, your son, your brother, etc., would you appreciate a bunch of people making jokes about it?

Today, FOX finally admitted that ABC, BBC, and FOX got this story wrong and were hooked by an urban legend....

This one has value in itself - I suppose the answer is nope they don't check snopes. Me? Hey if ABC, BBC, and FOX report something, I'm passin' it on - those guys get paid to check stuff out...

Whew! For a minute there I was really sad, thinking some poor person's tax returns would be delayed!

Well I guess this "STORY" does have a point about death and taxes being linked.<p>He died with his loafers on.<p>Funny even if not true.

Poor, poor Milton. (He should've burned the building down while he could!)
