Cybernetic Organisms? Do you want to be one?
In relation to this thread: Link
I was wondering if you would like to be free of wearing technology, not wearing anything that computes anything for you, such as watches or heartbeat monitor, etc. Comments? |
I wouldn't mind a couple of banks of spare memory, some automatic muscle toners, some sensory enhancements, and maybe an onboard computer and com-link. Basically things that would help me to work and play the way I enjoy working and playing, but without tying me to a desk.
Another thing I wouldn't mind, but which might be more of a nanotech thing than a cyborg thing, would be little critters tha go down into my lungs, scrub the garbage out of them, and eject it either into my body's natural waste disposal system or into an integrated container that I can empty from time to time. I like smoking, and it's going to kill me one of these days if they don't come up with something to that effect. |
I would want enough to make me healthy. Give me my leg back, kidney, repair my insides, and claws, got to have claws.
|
Here's lurkette's cybernetic wishlist (I'm one of the "hell yeah, sign me up" people):
- a wetwired neural uplink to the web. Instant information.....mmmmmmmm....I could browse the web during boring meetings, on planes, in waiting rooms, etc. Streaming audio directly into the auditory system. Too fucking cool. - chameleon skin/hair. They're working on paint that is basically bunches of teeny lcd's - it could change colors with a remote control. Imagine if you could do the same thing with your skin. I could have spots, stripes, plaid, instant makeup, instant tan, be white white white. Purely cosmetic (unless you're using it for camouflage) but very cool. - retractable titanium finger blades (but like Molly from Neuromancer, not like Wolverine from X-Men). Nobody'd better fuck with me :) - I like Tophat's nano-scrub idea. Never have to worry about asthma again. I could have symbiotes that live in my lungs and automatically inject/spray anti-inflammatories into my lung tissue/airway if I start having an attack. Come to think of it, there's some new research that shows the brain knows you're going to have an asthma attack before you start to experience symptoms. It could trigger release of indwelling albuterol nanosites before the circulating eosinophils get to your lung tissue. |
LIke I said in the other thread on this I already consier myself a cyborg as I am dependent on unnatural technology to survive, i.e. glasses to see. I interface with my MP3 CD Player and it is basically a "worn" piece of tech. I'd be all for any other upgrades I could get...how about speed and strength enhancers ala Johnny Mnemonic and of course a very fast input port into my cerebrum. No more of this remembering dreams...make captures and post them! And of course the perverted aspects of cybernetics are too numerous to list. :D

I would like to have enhancements of the body. Stuff like vision that can handle all lightning conditions, with maybe heat sensing and other non normal spectrums. Give me a speed/reflex boost. maybe add a strenght boost. the integrated communications would be great.

i thoght this thread said cybernetic orgasms!
/backs away slowly |

Let's just say that I expect to be able to get an implanted cell (or whatever) phone before I die, as well as a clock, access to consensual reality, and other things I've not yet thought of. Go to work? Why bother? It's right here (thinks) and, Oh, you're up for a game of Unreal Tournament 2050? Let's play! No disks, no desktop equipment, or very little. Modems? They stopped making those 40 years ago! Power? Not a problem. No one wanted to implant nasty chemicles inside themselves, so we found a way to power these things by having them metabolise body fat (or blood sugar, or whatever). Hey, it's my fucking concept, so I'll make it come out as I want it to. I'm a lier; the idea isn't mine. Saw it in a science fiction magazine more than 10 years ago. |

And I'll take a cure for cancer, a cure for diabetes, heck, a Cure For What Ails You. The only problem is the price: another story I read had a character who took over various people's minds so they'd campaign for him. Think of how that could be extrapolated. Nasty. |

Yes, I'm pretty much already a cybernetic organism.
I figure the transformation will inevitably continue. The future is fine with me - whatever happens. |
Anything that will enhance my life, without making me less human is fine with me.
Some things on my cybernetic shopping list are: - Cybernetic eyes with phase-plate optics. Focus-free, lots of zoom, potential for viewing lots of digital information overlaid on my normal vision, built in digicam. - Tiny microphones embedded into ears. Can record sound clips of anything I hear for later playback. - High-speed internet access, and access to various cellular/radio networks. - Lots and lots of onboard digital memory to store all that collected data. - Infra-red port... just to mess with peoples' minds by switching channels on their TV sets :D Basically I need better means to keep track of large amounts of information, and still have room for random stuff I run into in my daily routine. |

While I find it interesting, I don't think I want to become a cyborg of any sort. I'd rather remain as organic as possible.
|
Just some things to consider:
You look the same, but you're only five feet tall. You'd have the strength of five men. Maybe not men, but five gorillas. But, since you're that strong, if you try to pet a kitten, you'd crush it. No laser-beam eyes, but X-ray vision. Yeah, and big chainsaw hands! Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!! You'll have a cloaking device. Big metal teeth. Nails are like candy to robots! And you'll eat tires instead of licorice. If anyone knows what that's from they get a prize. Well, not so much a prize as nothing. But try anyway. |
put me down in the "hell yeah!" category! :-D i've dreamt about this stuff since i was a kid. to have titanium bones that are unbreakable. assisted muscles and ligaments to help me lift all that extra weight, and more. kevlar skin that's impenetrable. dude, that would be so freaking sweet. hey, this kind of reminds me of that one Sealab 2021 episode. :-)
|
i always used to be against borging myself- then I snapped an arm in 4 places and came down with diabetes- at this point my right humerous is literaly more metal than bone- and fuck, at this point anybody that finds a cyber cure for diabete can implant that sucker right quick- the "purity" of me as an organism pales compared to the desire for survival.....

Oh shit. I read "Cybernetic orgasms".
Being an android would be terrible! I don't like the idea of something inside of me that moves without my brain controlling it... But for cybernetic orgasms...... |
My left eye sees sharp distinctions in shapes and colors, but can't read at any distance unless the text is huge, has some 3-d perception, sees extraordinarily well at night, and sees motion like min-head set cams, but can't make out faces after 10 feet. Sounds neat but hideously non-functional and just tends to drift off when my right eye is open. I'd like to replace it.

I would just want to be super strong and run really really fast. Not askin for too much, am i?

well being diabetic.... I had to wear a blood glucose monitor that literally had wires coming OUT of my waist for a week... and took my blood glucose level ever 5 mins...
it was kinda neat, gave me a print off graph of when I took my insulin (entered into a pager thing I had to wear) when I ate, what by body reacted to, and how it reacted... makes me really debate how WELL the pump will really work cause that monitor thing kicked ass ;) soooo I guess you could say.. since I stand in a diabetic standpoint I'd love to be cybernetic |
shadowrun baby... ive allways wanted a shotgun in my forearm... and cyber eyes
