A BA flight to Washington was cancelled at the last minute yesterday after an intelligence tip-off that a woman suicide bomber planned to blow up the plane over the US capital.

It was the third day running that a major security scare had hit the afternoon Flight 223 service from Heathrow to Washington.

US security services told Scotland Yard the woman - almost certainly linked to al-Qaeda - intended to hide eight to 12 ounces of plastic explosive in her vagina.

She would then go to the toilet during the Boeing 747 flight, remove the material and detonate a blast that would down the aircraft.

A senior Yard source told the Daily Mirror: "Smuggling a bomb on to a plane by this method is one of our worst nightmares.

"If you do not have specific information about the suspect, it would be impossible to carry out an intimate body search of every female passenger."

The source said intelligence information indicated only that an attack was planned for "sometime over the holiday period".

Apparently, a particular BA flight number was at risk.

The source added: "Because the intelligence did not identify a passenger by name, it was decided to disrupt the plot by cancelling the flights."

Exactly how large would 8 to 12 ounces of plastic explosives be?

I'm guessing similair in size to and 8 ounce piece of clay. But, being flexible, she could just havesquished it any shape neccasary, and jam it up there. And besides, with some of the videos I've seen on the internet, it most definitely would not be impossible.

now that is quite crazy. But if they just cancelld the flights, what would stop the woman from doing it on another flight? Weird is all i have to say.

ya, or in the case of planes that are redirected and forced to land elsewhere, the bomber could still detonate the bomb mid-air so redirecting it would make little difference except to have the plan not crash on a famous building.

Oh, I forgot, it would look *conspicuous* to go to the counter and buy tickets right there to, say, NY instead of Washington. Its not like that is exactly the kind of thing people would do to get to their goddamn destination while all these terrormongers cancel flights at random (intelligence my ass!).

As far as the article is concerned, there really probably is a valid concern over smuggling things in body cavities.

However, unless I'm mistaken, don't plastic explosives require a pretty strong detontator? Did she hide those in there too?

Anyways, what I think this all boils down to is the idea of sacrificing the few for the good of the many. Perhaps a few hundred people didn't get home as soon as the wanted to, but maybe, just maybe because of the security measures they were allowed to come home alive instead of chunked together with plane wreckage.

Homeland security will never be perfect, but I think its going to take a while to iron the kinks out.
