Lotterys

I just read the alabama sex toy thread and it got me thinking. What other stupid state wide bans are there? Here in Oklahoma we have a number of things that are banned here but legal in like 40 of the other states. Like hardcore porn and tatoos are both illegal. But my main question is how many states have any form of a lottery? I THINK Oklahoma is actully one of the few NOT to have one. I know Texas,New York,Missiouro,Kanasas and Illinois all have them. What other states have them?

Ohio has a lottery. Can't think of any dumb laws off the top of my head though.

JNshorty 04-30-2003 04:38 PM

Cali has a decent lottery and the signs for it are EVERY where..... in fact I cant think of any stupid laws that I have come across for this state.....

apetaster 04-30-2003 04:43 PM

Mass has one and NH/VT/ME share one.

phoenix1002 04-30-2003 04:47 PM

New York and Connecticut have lotteries. I'm not sure about any stupid laws.

On a bit of a tangent, did anyone else have to read the short story "The Lottery"? Its the one where they draw names out of a box to determine who is going to be stoned to death as a sacrifice for the crops... that always comes to mind whenever I hear lottery.

gov135 04-30-2003 04:54 PM

OH, PA, WV I know for sure all have lotteries. Dumb laws - none that I can think of.

I'm sure we must have, because we also got to see a movie of it. Which was a hoot.

We have a lottery - Bet you didn't know this but -

A lottery is a tax on stupidity!

imemine 04-30-2003 07:06 PM

There was a website stating all these laws that didn't make sense :)
Just use Google and type "stupid laws".
I'm sure you'll get something...

phredgreen 04-30-2003 08:23 PM

arizona has its's own state lottery and a couple smaller ones... arizona also participates in the powerball... all of em are a waste of my time. i've never bought a ticket. ld has it right on the head... it's paying your stupid tax.

mrsandman 04-30-2003 08:33 PM

Nevada don't have one...wanna guess why?

Somenosuke 04-30-2003 10:26 PM

For some dumb law information, one might try http://www.dumblaws.com . I find the site entertaining. :) I'm easy to please, though. :p

Sun Tzu 05-01-2003 01:39 AM

Arizona has one. What I'd like to know is this: We also have scratch tickets. Theres a website that lists how many winners are still out including the grand prize winners. If all of the grand prize winners are sold out and they continue to sell them without posting at the store they sell them in that there is no grand prize winners left, isnt that false advertising and grounds for a law suit?

SexyCat 05-01-2003 02:56 AM

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think Utah has a lottery.

Daval 05-01-2003 05:01 AM

goto dumblaws.com for some hillarios and true laws.

troit 05-01-2003 05:50 AM

Here are a few stupid laws from my current home state of Maryland:

1. Oral sex can not be given or received anywhere.

2. Though you may spit on a city roadway, spitting on city sidewalks is prohibited.

3. Eating while swimming in the ocean is prohibited.

Although I just recently moved from Virginia:

1. Not only is it illegal to have sex with the lights on, one may not have sex in any position other than missionary.

2. Citizens must honk their horn while passing other cars.

3. It is illegal to tickle women.

4. It is illegal to kick your wife out of bed.

5. A man may face 60 days in jail for patting a woman's derriere.

6. It is illegal to park a car on railroad tracks.

7. It is legal for a man to beat his wife on the courthouse steps so long as it is before 8:00 pm.

Oh, man. I watched the movie in school. It still haunts me today.

extra taxation on the poor and stupid.

I know people who have played the lottery for close to 20 years @ US$5/ week... which over that time compounded interest would be closer to that US$1 million payout than they are today.

The problem is you don't earn compound interest on investments. Even if you were able to earn a consistent rate of 10 percent over 20 years (which is next to impossible), you would only earn a little more than 18,000 if you bought $25 each month for 20 years. Based on the opportunity for return, the risk is extremely low, depending on your means.

Now if you're spending food money on lottery tickets...

Then you're just an idiot. That's not the lottery's fault.

louiedog 05-01-2003 07:01 AM

Once my friends and I found an unscratched lotto ticket outside a gas station. We scratched it off and won $1 so we took it back inside and exchanged it for another $1 ticket. We won another $1.... took it up and exchanged it. This went on for about 7 or 8 tickets and in the end we were right where we started.... nothing.

ratbastid 05-01-2003 07:11 AM

Utah for SURE doesn't have a lottery. Neither does North Carolina, where I live. They're talking about it very seriously, though. There was a referendum about joining the Powerball recently.

In Utah, where I grew up, there's a law still on the books that all streets must be built wide enough that you can turn your horse and carriage around.

hrdwareguy 05-01-2003 07:34 AM

Oklahoma has an old blue law that makes it illegal to have sex before you are maried. Texas has a law that makes the act of homosexuality a criminal offense.

BTW the Oklahoma lottery will never pass when it goes to a vote of the people.

While the 10% is a little steep, an 8% return over time isn't out of the question. And at that RoR, the investment comes in at around $15K. Which, if I read Cynthetiq's post correctly, is a hellofa lot closer to the jackpot (given the 1 in 120,526,770 odds) than they most likely got for their $6000 investment.

Note: The odds are based on a jackpot per drawing, not counting entering one drawing per week for 20 years.
