Circumcision Does Not Dull Sensitivity!

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Circumcised men appear to have the same degree of penis sensitivity as men who are uncircumcised, a new study suggests -- in a finding that will probably just add fuel to the fire of a controversial subject debated for years.

The findings are to be presented Tuesday by Dr. Arnold Melman at a meeting of the American Urological Society in Chicago.

"We demonstrated that there are no significant differences in penile sensation between circumcised and uncircumcised men in both patients with and without erectile dysfunction," said Melman in a prepared statement.

"This study does not address whether or not patients should be circumcised, however, it merely served to test sensitivity," added Melman, who is with Montefiore Medical Center in New York City.

The current policy of the American Academy of Pediatrics is that the potential medical benefits of male circumcision are not substantial enough to recommend that all boys become circumcised.

Around three-quarters of American-born men in the U.S. are circumcised, although that number appears to be declining rapidly in some regions of the country.

Male circumcision is common in North America and elsewhere for religious and cultural reasons and is known to help prevent urinary tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases and penile cancer, a rare condition. In the minor surgical operation, the foreskin is removed, which can help prevent bacteria from growing under the fold of skin.

On the other hand, many parents feel it inflicts unnecessary pain, and in many countries circumcision is rarely performed. In recent years, the issue has been highly controversial with vocal opponents to the procedure likening it to mutilation.

Still, few studies have aimed to investigate the differences in penile sensitivity, if any, between the two groups.

In the current investigation, Melman's team evaluated the penile sensitivity among 43 uncircumcised men and 36 circumcised men through a variety of methods, including vibration, pressure, spatial perception and warm and cold thermal thresholds. Both groups contained men with and without erectile dysfunction.

In uncircumcised men, the foreskin was pulled back during the sensitivity testing procedures.

The investigators found no statistically significant differences in sensitivity between the two groups of men, regardless of whether they had erectile dysfunction.

In other findings, the researchers found that white men were 25 times as likely and African-American men were eight times as likely as Hispanics to be circumcised.

So now you know.

Hycdubg 04-30-2003 01:20 PM

Well I know that I will sleep better tonight.

rsl12 04-30-2003 01:47 PM

HUH???? What does "spatial perception" mean??????

scope 04-30-2003 02:57 PM

Interesting...didnt know 75% of American guys were circumcised though.

Nothing like the purple helmeted soldiers of the fortune getting some relief over it's turtlenecked counterparts.

MSD 04-30-2003 03:19 PM

That's not my complaint. Without a foreskin, it stretches teh surrounding skin like a tent. If I hadn't been circumcised, I'd have at least another usable inch.

Somenosuke 04-30-2003 03:25 PM

Bah. "Likening it to mutilation." um..You're cutting a baby's flesh off its penis. What the hell else would you call it? Aahh nevermind. I don't wanna get myself into an argument, so I will serve myself a tall cold glass of STFU.

Eviltree 04-30-2003 03:41 PM

Well I'm glad I was never subjected to the pain.

BulletBob 04-30-2003 03:53 PM

Pain? I doubt anyone remembers the pain of their circumcision. I know I don't.

louiedog 04-30-2003 03:57 PM

I'm circumsized but I was so young I don't remember the pain. no big deal

All i know is 80 percent of the women i have ever met prefer the cut version. Some will even tell you that they can't suck an uncircumcised dick.

I have only met one woman in my life who prefered uncut, and a few neutral.

I say, give the kid all the weapons he needs to get a life time of willing blow jobs.

JMHO

If being circumsized did dull the pleasure would you really want to know? I mean who wants to hear "I get more pleasure from sex than you do!"

JStrider 04-30-2003 04:42 PM

i heard that being uncircumsized makes it more used to being touched and rubbed and whatnot because the head is always exposed being bounced around in the shorts...

i could see how that could make other more sexual contact less intense at first maybe... i dunno

as for it being mutilation... its a big cleanliness issue... your a lot more suseptable to different infections and what not...

vermin 04-30-2003 06:19 PM

Which do you think is a bigger, more useless pain:

A. circumcision the kid won't remember

B. urinary tract infections

Which is why vermin jr (my son) is snipped.

PataQ 04-30-2003 06:43 PM

i assumed that getting a circumcision would be more sensitive? the head on mine atleast is very sensitive, i couldn't imagine the sensations without the foreskin protecting it

Halx 04-30-2003 08:27 PM

uncut, natural, clean, and proud.

I can go into all the reasons why I prefer the way I am to the way I could be had my parents been religious, but I will leave that for another day.

phoenix1002 04-30-2003 08:33 PM

I'm not sure which is better sex-wise, but it seems to me that circumcision is a good idea. Less infection=good. Besides, seems to me like lots of circumcised guys are gettin' it... so it can't be that bad. Also, those people likening it to mutilation and inflicting children to pain... I don't remember any pain involved in being circumcised. Besides, a little pain is good, every once in a while... never mind, I'm not going to get into the whole increase in wussiness thing right now.

SaltPork 04-30-2003 08:39 PM

I wish I could have been a subject of that test...I need some.

There are many myths about circumsion, hardly any of which are true.

It prevents Penile Cancer. Myth
http://www.norm-uk.org/penis.html <--just a few of the studys showing it does not

I myself am uncicumsized and havent once expeciance a unriniary infection of any type, it does in no way increase cleanleness, if you wash properly , which you should anyway LOL

and way take off something that was ment to be there in the first place?

God it's good to be a Jew.

louiedog 05-01-2003 06:54 AM

I'd like to propose three things:
1) women don't have one so they dont know how it feels to the man if he's cut or uncut
2) uncut men have no idea what it feels like to cut men
3) cut men have no idea what it feels like to uncut men unless it happened to them much later in life

all i know is it feels extremely good when my girlfriend does things with my cut penis and i'm willing to bet uncut men will say the exact same thing, so what's the point of arguing which is better? and Hal, it doesn't necessarily have anything to do with religion, my parents aren't religious in any way.

hrdwareguy 05-01-2003 07:41 AM

What I want to know is how they measured the sensativity factor of all those guys.

Did they have the guy rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 or hook a bunch of wires up to his penis.

Charlatan 05-01-2003 09:13 AM

I am cut but I chose not to cut my son... I didn't see any reason for the procedure...

Infections don't occur if you wash with soap and water... something you should do anyway.
