What Instrument(s) do you Play? What do you WISH you could Play?

Another resurrected thread,

Anyway, I play decent guitar, although I haven't played enough in recent years.

My baby is my Martin D28. I play folk, classic rock and religious stuff.

I have a harp (midsize) that I am intending lessons on, maybe after this term ends. I've messed around with recorders, but my music reading isn't that great.

I REALLY want to learn Piano, but not until I can buy a full size keyboard.

Spanky Johnson 04-19-2003 09:04 AM

I would really like to play guitar, but I don't think I am cut out for it. My hands are pretty small for a guy, and my fingers are short, which I think is a disadvantage. I bought a guitar and tried to learn to play for quite some time (just self-taught, I never took any lessons). I can play open chords, but can't get barre chords down at all, and can't move between most open chords quickly enough.

forseti-6 04-19-2003 09:05 AM

I too play guitar. I too have a Martin D-28! My baby is a '65 Martin D-21 though. Haha. What year is yours? Mine is a 2000 model. I really love playing mandolin and piano also, but I've always wanted to learn to play some fretless instruments. The cello has always been an instruments that has intrigued me.

Omar12 04-19-2003 09:06 AM

I play the french horn and guitar
I wanna buy a bass, I have played it before and I like it more than the guitar.

Spanky,

Don't think you can't play good because you have small hands. I've got the smallest hands out of all my friends that play, and I can play a heck of a lot better than them. It's all practicing and stretching though. Albeit I used to practice about 4 hours a day for a few years, your hands def. shouldn't dictate how good you can be.

Junchbailey 04-19-2003 09:07 AM

I play guitar, bass, and keyboard. I also have a drum macine but I don't think that counts as playing. I have a Fender DG-10 acoustic, a Washburn XB-100 bass, and my electric is a cheap no name.

spectre 04-19-2003 09:08 AM

I play the guitar and can keep up with most songs, I just wish I was better at it.

alpha phi 04-19-2003 09:08 AM

I play the guitar
I've always wanted to play drums, but I can't keep a rhythm to save my life

yournamehere 04-19-2003 09:09 AM

First of all - welcome back <b>Lebell</b>

I also used to play guitar - alas, some severe financial setbaccks a long time ago forced me to sell my beloved Ovation Dreadnaught - haven't played since.

frenik 04-19-2003 09:12 AM

I play guitar like shit, but it doesn't matter because I really only play to improve my mood. I played trumpet in the 5th grade until my family moved and the school we went to didn't have the music program my old school had, and I had gotten pretty good in that half a year. Don't remember anything now, though. When I was 5 I played piano, and I can still play the song I played for the recital, even though I can barely find middle c or whatever. Very strange the way our brains work.

I want to get a drum set. I don't really wish I could play the drums, I just want to bang around on them for a while, it would be fun.

Well, that's encouraging. I think I'm going to get out my guitar and give it another try. If anyone knows any good guitar tutorial sites, please post them.

forseti-6 04-19-2003 09:17 AM

Spanky,

try this site: http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/f/...8/glw/lessons/

My one friend used it, and he said it was pretty helpful. Also the best advice I can give you for getting better (other than practicing) is to play with people who are better than you. It DOES rub off. Just don't be modest, as you can only learn when you're making mistakes.

Dragonlich 04-19-2003 09:20 AM

I used to play the trumpet when I was young, and was quite good at it. Then I got bored. I can probably still play the thing.

I wish I could play "hide the sausage" with a girl. :)

Fly 04-19-2003 09:20 AM

damn.......i put this same topic in the tilted music this morn.oh well..:D

how's it goin' Lebell?

drums,bass and guitars for me.

like to learn the piano too,for some reason.:D

rock_bottom 04-19-2003 09:23 AM

My family is musically inclined... so they kind of got me into it as a kid.
Piano: Took 5 years of irregular lessons, but mostly taught myself to play later on. I just know "standards", patriotic and Christmas songs, it comes in handy every once in a while.
Cello: Was in Orchestra 7 years. It was mostly a social thing, if we hadn't been having so much fun I would have dropped out. I liked to play, but not being particularly talented, it took a lot of practice to keep up with everyone.
I wish I was good with Fruity Loops or other equipment... it would be fun to make some trance and hardcore music.

b1m2x3 04-19-2003 09:28 AM

is a computer an instrument? :D

played violin for 6 years
guitar for 1
flute for 1 (wanted to play piccolo)
and ukelele

Lebell 04-19-2003 09:42 AM

Hee,

Hi YourNameHere, Flyman (sorry about the repost bro).

Forseti-6, mine is a 70's vintage, bought for 660$ used. It was a super find, one of my prized possessions. I have another guitar that I use outside and I sold my Epiphone 12 string.

Someday I want to pick up a Taylor 12 string and a Gibson Natural Flame top hollow body.

Chilly McFreeze 04-19-2003 10:07 AM

I play guitar, I like Fenders personally. I have a strat and one of those Supersonics they made about 5 years ago (the body is like an upside down Jaguar, and it comes in this cool metallic blue sparkle finish). I was watching the Aerosmith making of Pump video the other day, and I'd love to be able to play the drums like Kramer!

Somenosuke 04-19-2003 10:19 AM

I played guitar a little bit when I was in high school, but then I stopped practicing. So I kind of stink at it now. :P Tried piano, same as guitar. I'd -really- love to learn harp, recorder, and maybe take up violin again. (Tried that in 3rd grade, had to quit, though.) I'm primarily a vocalist. :)

oane 04-19-2003 10:25 AM

The only "Instrument" I can play is....you know.....

Having said that, I wish I could play saxphone. Else piano.

World's King 04-19-2003 10:28 AM

I got the 2 Turntables and a Microphone.

Foo.

MyFakeAccount 04-19-2003 10:28 AM

I play the trombone, and I would love to play the Piano, but that requires something I don’t have, talent.

The_Dude 04-19-2003 11:12 AM

i play a lil guitar

and the skin flute (joking)

SecretMethod70 04-19-2003 12:14 PM

I play saxophone (pretty much any type as they're all very similar, but mainly alto), bassoon, and ... vocal chords ;) :p

I gave up saxophone and bassoon to pursue a career in singing, so that's what I'm doing now. I'm required to learn some piano so I can sort of play that and am supposedly going to get better.

And I wish I could play guitar, drums, cello, whatever - anything really, they're all cool :D

kgb 04-19-2003 12:19 PM

I played the trombone, tuba and baritone years ago. Right now I can still play the piano a bit. What I really want to learn to play is the acordion. I want to be the polka king of the Midwest.

onodrim 04-19-2003 12:30 PM

I play piano, trumpet, and sing. Since I'm studying voice right now, that takes over all the rest. :) I've always wanted to learn to play any strnged instrument from the viola to the Cello to the guitar. Maybe one day if I ahve extra time (riiiiiiiiight) or extra money (this is so not looking good ;)) I'll get a chance to learn. :)

valkan 04-19-2003 12:36 PM

I really wanted to learn how to play guitar... untill all my friends in my grade came back from summer one year, all had gotten guitars, started skateboarding, and wore those punk spiked belts,..... trendwhores lol

genka 04-19-2003 12:42 PM

I play trumpet really badly. Like real bad.

Janie 04-19-2003 12:54 PM

I play the piano - have been playing four years now, but I wish I was lots better.
I wouldn't mind learning bass guitar, upright bass and/or cello, flute, clarinet (I tried once and couldn't even make a sound. it's been bugging me ever since).
Most of all, I want to learn to sing.

GakFace 04-19-2003 12:55 PM

I learned how to play the Cello. I'm not the greatest there ever was but it brought me more than I had ever imagined. First it taught me how to read music. Always a useful skill. Secondly, Cello is usually a background intrument. From playing it, I have gained a respect for the background music. From it I tend to listen to just the music.. its rare for me to hear everything a band says, as i'm too intune with the music. The third is simply that i also like to listen to classical music along side with Godsmack, Manson, Reel Big Fish... everyone :)

bigpappasmurf 04-19-2003 01:09 PM

i play bass, but i'd love to play cello or piano or something like that. i'm pretty good at bass, i have 2 right now, a fretless and a 5 string ESP

semperwill 04-19-2003 01:12 PM

I play the guitar but have always wanted to learn the piano

G_Whiz 04-19-2003 01:21 PM

I used to play the trumpet and the piano. Haven't played anything in years.

I'd love to learn the guitar and bango.

Crimson 04-19-2003 01:22 PM

I play bass guitar

Well

I own a bass guitar - I wish I could play it

I fell in love with the intro for Little Green Bag - years and years ago

And have been playing it ever since - And nothing else - I never seem to have the time for it

guthmund 04-19-2003 01:27 PM

I play a pretty mean guitar and a decent bass.

I used to ham it up on my trumpet and french horn through highschool, but the girls just didn't dig the my Armstrong, so I put it away.

I would love to play the Cello. I love the sound it makes, round and fat like a plump pear. It seems like a background instrument, but it also has it's solo chops, which adds to the interest

boatin 04-19-2003 01:31 PM

I have a HUGE desire to play the harmonica. I watch Springsteen and Dylan, and wish I could do it. Don't really know how to start. Any thoughts?

Plummie 04-19-2003 01:41 PM

Buy one and start messing around! :) It's not too terribly difficult. You can do it!

The piano is my baby. Been playing for 13 years. :)

Foozboote 04-19-2003 01:45 PM

HELLO Lebell, nice to see you around again :)

Grondar 04-19-2003 02:28 PM

I played violin and then viola when I was younger. Yea, I know, both very "cool and hip" instruments. :)

I didn't really enjoy going to lessons and practicing, but my parents made me stick with it, and I guess it was a good experience now that I am done with it.

I played in a local orchestra and don't consider myself to be much better than average, but the change over to viola did allow me to experience more, as the competetion wasn't as great. There aren't as many violists as violinists around here.

I am in college now, and not playing any instruments. I did take one or two piano lessons as a kid, but they didn't amount to much.

Playing a musical instrument is a fun and very rewarding experience, I just don't think I was "into" it enough to do well and sustain interest past high school.

Fob_Magi 04-19-2003 02:35 PM

I dont play anything.. but I'd kill to play the guintar.. I fuck around on my friends sometimes, but I just cant carry a tune, beat, melody anything.. and I think I'm tone deaf..

rogue49 04-19-2003 02:37 PM

Drums, pretty decent. (I just need a new set)

Guitar, just a little bit (strumming for the most part, a few chords)

I'd love to learn piano.

bundy 04-19-2003 02:44 PM

i played Viola and Violin as well when i was younger. and they got me places.

but i only play the piano atm.

wish i could play really great jazz piano!

a1t3r3g0 04-19-2003 06:17 PM

Ya know, I'd really like to be able to play anything... guitar, piano, sax, drums.. hmm maybe I'll set some free time aside this summer.. who am I kidding, I won't have any :(

phoenix1002 04-19-2003 06:29 PM

I play flute (have played for 10+ years now I think), piccolo (evil little instrument), and i'm learning the didgeridoo. I want to learn how to play a guitar, but just don't have the time. Maybe over the summer I'll steal my dad's. ;)

i8one2 04-19-2003 06:33 PM

a yamaha dj2 midi keyboard

oldbob 04-19-2003 06:41 PM

I played piano for most of my childhood, but that was awhile ago. I've been playing bass lately, and i'm looking to learn cello or another (small) fretless instrument. and harmonica.

I appreciate the confidence. I can't seem to make the jump from "Clemintine" and assorted Christmas carols to anything worthwhile... I need to dig around and find a lesson somewhere. Maybe after all my other projects!

vermin 04-19-2003 10:21 PM

I play a yellow Fender strat, a black Hohner copy of a steinberger, a small-bodied Goya six string acoustic, and an Epiphone 12 string acoustic.
I also have a drum machine that I can't program worth shit, and a four track recorder on which I've recorded 6 or 7 original songs. But they suck. All instrumentals 'cause I sing terribly.

Oh, yeah, I wish I could play piano (listen to Lynyrd Synyrd's They Call Me The Breeze, THAT style of piano).

zmbabwe 04-19-2003 10:37 PM

I play cello, I bought a guitar on friday, I don't know how far I'll pursue that one. I'd really love to play drums.

BlueBongo 04-19-2003 11:19 PM

I play the trumpet.... and I wouldn't mind learning the bass guitar :)

04-19-2003 11:22 PM

I’ve played guitar for 15 years. There was a period of 5 years I was in the military that I forth most part, put it down. I started out playing classical, and then I heard Yngwie which motivated me to practice scales and arpeggios flat picking. In the last 3 years I only pick up my guitar here and there: Fender Strat. I took a semester of piano in college and found it pretty difficult. I really wished I would have picked up trumpet, I’d be a stud with the ladies by now.

holtmate 04-19-2003 11:52 PM

I played saxophone for about 10 years, alto, tenor, and baritone. I stopped recently, just got lazy, I guess.

One instrument I would like to learn would be bass guitar. I think it would just be fun.

Xixox 04-20-2003 01:12 AM

I played trumpet in high school. I was good at reading music, but awful at improv.

I wish I could sit down at a piano and just hammer out something by Philip Glass or George Winston. My problem is that I'm too shy about playing. If anyone is within earshot, I can't even practice. Can't even do chopsticks with an audience. Someday I'll get a keyboard so I can just throw on headphones & play to myself.

snowy 04-20-2003 02:04 AM

I can sing and read music, but that's about it. At one time or another I've tried my hand at guitar, piano and the clarinet. But none of them worked out, so I'm still stuck singing. I'd love to be able to play the piano, but unfortunately my hands are too small. If they could make a smaller piano with littler keys, then maybe I'd be in luck :)

apetaster 04-20-2003 04:11 AM

Used to play guitar. Have a 'Fender Stratocaster with a whammy bar' in the closet collecting dust. The strings are probably rusty.
When I have kids I'll take it out of the closet and play them lullabies of Megadeth.

phunktastic 04-20-2003 04:19 AM

I can sorta play guitar (self taught, www.wholenote.com ) ,, and I got a banjo for christmas awhile back. Never learned how to play it though.

My goals are to learn to play the banjo and jazz piano.

ratbastid 04-20-2003 04:34 AM

I currently play guitar and jazz piano.

I HAVE played trumpet, brass baritone, bass, drums, and french horn.

frozenstellar 04-20-2003 06:50 AM

i currently play acoustic guitar and bass.

wish i could play the violin and piano, beautitul instruments

ARTelevision 04-20-2003 10:02 AM

keyboards.
Have a roomful of vintage synths, gear, and some recent stuff.

GuttersnipeXL 04-20-2003 10:14 AM

I play the guitar and naturally wish that I was better at it...practice makes perfect...I would love to be able to tear it up on a clavinet...trouble is finding an original that won't break my bank account.

Pooface 04-20-2003 11:59 AM

Ibanez RX series for me. I can of course also play BASS. I play decent drums to. I eant to learn the piano and bagpipes.

John Henry 04-20-2003 12:05 PM

I play guitar. I have an Aria Pro II. I have a balalaika too, but as far as I can work out, even though it looks a bit like a guitar or a lute, it's not for making music.

degrawj 04-20-2003 05:58 PM

i play violin, viola, cello, bass, piano, guitar, oboe, bassoon, and a little trumpet. i wish i could play every instrument.

greytone 04-20-2003 06:02 PM

I don't really have any musical talent, and the only thing I play is the CD disc changer. If I did play something it would probably be the kettle drums. I would just sit and listen to the rest of the orchestra and then when it came time for the crescendo, it would be my time to pipe in with my two cents.

Atropos4 04-20-2003 06:54 PM

i play guitar ....not very often and not very great
i used to play the flute and wish i still did...i only quit cuz the teacher was a #%$!@ i was going to be first chair too.(for those of you that know what that means) :)
i would like to learn to play the harp ....

Frosstbyte 04-20-2003 07:04 PM

Piano's my deal. I've played for about 12 years. My parents have the piano in their basement because I don't have anywhere to store it right now, which sucks.

I had a brief stint with the cello, but that really didn't stick for me. Had to prioritize and the piano won out.

I'd like to play the guitar. I often mess around with my roommate's, but I'm just not any good at it.

AlphaFox830 04-20-2003 07:52 PM

I play trombone and trumpet, but im a clozet drummer actually.

Does anoyne have any advice for starting drummers?

hiredgun 04-20-2003 08:24 PM

I play.... my voice.

I wanna learn guitar though, I've messed around before and one of my bandmates promised to teach me once we're done recording for a while.

Edit: Oh, and I play the trombone. Or know how, at least, though I forgot to mention it because I don't play nowadays (no need for a trombone in a rock band...)

i played the trumpet and piano when I was in HS.

was in band class with Dave Navarro (trumpet) and Steve Perkins (drums)

Prophecy 05-16-2003 08:03 AM

I haven't had the chance to pratice or play anything lately, but i can play the Violin, Sax, piano, a little organ and some guitar by tab

Minx 05-16-2003 09:00 AM

I took piano lessons for years as a kid then self-taught myself after that. I can play okay but don't have the time to practice to get better. Into the classical stuff mostly and used to be able to play Moonlight Sonata from memory but not now! I have the most beautiful antique upright baby grand (an old player piano and I still have rolls for it!)...it's been in my family for generations. I would like to learn to play the cello - it is such a beautiful instrument (Yo Yo Mah is a MASTER on it) and wish I could play classical guitar.

warrrreagl 05-16-2003 10:06 AM

Rhythm guitar, bass guitar, banjo, dulcimer, harmonica, piano, flute, drums, saxophones, trumpet, trombone, oboe, violin, viola, cello, bass, and French Horn.

Out of all that, I can not coax even the slightest sound from a clarinet. Go figure.

mxyzptlk 05-16-2003 10:16 AM

Played the clarinet and piano many moons ago.

Right now I have a burning desire to buy and learn to play the fiddle. Must be that "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" Movie CD.

Antihero 05-16-2003 10:27 AM

I play bass guitar and (try to) sing :)

krwlz 05-16-2003 05:07 PM

i got the trumpet goin here, im no louie but its all good

Leander 05-16-2003 07:16 PM

I'm kind of like a jack of all trades master of none. I played alto, soprano and tenor sax for about 15 years. Once I left school I pawned the saxes. It doesn't help to smoke.
I also play guitar, mandolin, dulcimer and banjo; all just for fun. My baby is a Gibson RD Artist from 1977. Also had to play recorder for a college theory class, and I'm still trying to figure out why.
I would love to play drums. So much coordination. So much anger, so little time.
