candians look here
how many candians say eh
is it common at all or is it a americain sterotype |
I for one don't, never have. Really the only time I hear Canadians say eh is when they're trying to show off to people from the States. :)
|
I am canadian, and this is a sore matter simply because of its overuse by americans
Allow me to create a metaphor, its regional based, but Californians here will be able to relate. A canadian saying eh, is as common as a person from NorCal saying hella, but it is more natural, so it comes off as being about a trillion times less annoying. Its a natural part of speech, just like you have a tendency to say 'huh' in similar situations which eh would be appropriate. If you dont quite get the metaphor, I'm afraid I have nothing for you. |
that methophor i understand well
interesting |
I say it sometimes. The stereotype is based on fact, but it is used more often in certain regions of the country.
I agree with Numist here. Its used in the same way Americans tack on 'huh' or 'right' at the end of some sentences. |
I constantly catch myself saying "eh". Ususally I start doing it as a joke but then it sticks and I do it without thinking.
|
damn proud to say it myself.................eh.

I'm from the US and I say it. No Canadian family or anything ...
|
flyman said it best.....eh :D
http://www.bgu.ac.il/geol/canada.jpg After all....look at all the great things we have up here.... http://freespace.virgin.net/andrew.s...ase/beaver.gif Who can resist a cute little beaver? http://bryanmccabe.freehosting.net/i...da_collage.jpg Hockey....need I say more? http://www.ontariomaplesyrup.com/images/tin_big_web.jpg Pancakes just wouldn't be the same. http://www.rakuensanka.com/beer/canadian.jpg And well hell...we have the best beer around! http://www.recroomreviews.com/pd/humor/9044.jpg Ya...I'm a proud Canadian.....sorry - what was the original question? |
I was in Boston years ago yapping it up with a local in some bar and this guy couldn't stop bugging me about saying eh! It was all good natured.
Being a polite Canadian I didn't have the heart to tell him the correct pronunciations to labsta (lobster), woata (water) or cah (car). Loved the New England hospitality though. |
Minx, you missed the best thing about Canada...free health care.
I lived in Buffalo for five years and spent a lot of time in Niagara Falls and Fort Erie. Nice areas. Great strip clubs. |
Quote:
I equally love the manner of the people in Canadia. If family/money were no issue I'd move up there in a second. |
Ya, eh.
|
Hey Minx, there is nothing wrong with a cute little beaver at all, and Canadians do say eh I think that it has something to do with the ties to the U.K. way back in the day.
|
take off eh you hosers.
we say it but its more of a joke based on the american stereotype. |
I catch myself on it some times too, I'm not canadian just from northern Wisconsin. Ya know, so north that if you don't get cable all you get are 3 PBS channels... :D
|
Quote:
I adore Canada. I'm trying to find a way to move there myself. Great country, eh? ;) |
I say Eh all the time... better than the constant 'like'
|
i say eh quite often, nothing to be ashamed of at all. Part of the lingo, thats all.
eh! |
Eh is an amazing word. It lets you turn any statement into a question, eh?
|
I end about every other sentence with 'eh?'. I remember seeing a stand up comic saying the difference between a Canadian and a New Yorker was that we put the 'eh' at the end of a sentence while they put it at the start. (as in "Eh! Can't you see I'm walkin here!?")
And Minx, your beaver is adorable, eh? |
I live so close to the American border, and although I use it occasionally, all the American TV I watch has corrupted me :D
|
Avarett, I hereby dub thee as an honourary canadian until you can move up there. Just so long as you keep your spelling good and proper :D
[edited out a million typos, I should be put in asylum... this one was terrible...] |
Like colour and flavour? That's gonna be tough to get used to!!!
|
don't forget to call couches chesterfields.
I say eh fairly often, it's more dignified in my mind than the grunt of "huh" or "hunh" |
Ah, I don't know many people who use it, just the 'rough' people kind of say it...I don't hang out with them.
|
i say it all the time :)
|
Alright, let's clear some things up. The majority of people who use "eh?" alot are east of the maritimes [mantoba, sask. etc], especially in Ottawa. Believe me, I've been out east. Here, in Vancouver, you might hear it being said extremely occasionally, but it's not really all that common.
Basically, it replaces "no?", as in 'You like it eh?' instead of 'You like it, no?'. And for god's sake, it's CanAdians. We don't spell America wrong, so try and get our name right. |
Quote:
Perhaps you guys in BC think you're in the Maritimes, eh? |
I've lived in Canada all my life, and I don't say it.
I've noticed some other people say it though, but it isn't every second word. |
ok I have lived both in Canada and the US and it happens in Canada but some Americans say eh too.
|
I was under the impression that it was primarly the newfies who say "eh" constantly.
|
We say eh every chance we get. I don't even notice it anymore. It's like polite grunting to get attention.
|

You like to say eh, eh?
|
Happens. Its just polite to say eh when someone invites you in his igloo. I love living in Canada but polar bears roaming freely in the city can be quite dangerous.
|
Once you Americans catch on to saying eh, we'll start saying B.
|
I say it all the time, mostly I don't even notice.

I say EH even more than Homer Simpson.
What I don't say is : Don't got Ya'll come back, ya hear huh and pass the grits |
I haven't found that the use of eh is regional, as people way out west in BC use it almost as often as dude.

I occassionally say it. But when I lived in Europe for a number of years a lot of people used to tease me when I'd say it so I basically stopped.

An oldie but a goodie....
You know how Canada got their name right? Well, the folks in charge of naming the country were sitting down and they said "C eh N eh D eh" Wow, I told that joke horribly.... I got playfully smacked for telling that joke in the company of 5 Canadian men :D |
Can't claim to be a canadian here... but lived in Northern Minnesota close to the border for years...
I miss the great north... the beauty... the snow... the hockey... the beer... eh? :D |
Don't forget the Canadian accents on "hoose" (house) and aboot (about). Those are good ones too !!

A proper sentence isn't complete without an "eh", eh?
|
somethin' for the canadians ................eh.

On topic I say eh all the time. |
You guys have to watch FUBAR !! :D EH !!
|
I say eh but its very natural and I dont empahasize it. Its just part of my speech like y'all.
|
I catch myself saying 'eh' once in while, too. I see nothing wrong with using it or with the yanks teasing us about it. Every culture (country) has it's oddities. If we didn't, what reason would we have for laughing at others, eh?
|
Sure I say it all the time. Huh = Eh
|
Quote:
Americans say it too. I have a good friend in Buffalo who says it more than I do. I DO NOT SAY ABOOT, nor have i met anyone who says aboot. I never got that one. I do say roof properly, i.e. rooooooof, unlike my american friends who say "ruff" That one drives me crazy (when i watch all those american fixer upper shows) I also say route properly, i.e. rooooooot, not "rh-out" |
I say eh in the sense of "right"
Them Americans dont understand us,eh. I do not say any words improperly more-so then you. |
I say "eh" and never say "huh". "eh" sounds better, and I guess it is more Canadian so whatever. I don't think about it, it just gets said.
|
It's common AND it's an American sterotype. Sure I say eh sometimes but the way I see how other American protray Canadians saying eh is just fukin stupid. Americans that play as Canadian in some comedian movies say eh all the goddamn time!
So, its common AND American sterotype. |
the shirt on Fubar said it best FUCKIN EH!!!
saying eh is about as canadian as Bob and Doug Mackenzie and Canada kickin the States ass again at hockey. * GO JUNIORS GO* watch tomorrow morning 11:30 on TSN it will happen again. |
Quote:
THEY BLEW IT. Congratulations to team USA, they never gave up. |
I agree James t Kirk...congrats to the US Junior team! Canada will have to look to next year.
As for saying eh..I do say it. I usually don't realize it but every now and then I do and just laugh. It is just a part of speech though...I find a lot of americans say... "you know" and "like", etc. |
it is kind of true but they don't have that accent like "Eiiiiii"
|
Oh my god... I say eh so very much its scary. Me and allll my friends. My b/f recently came to Canda for the first time...and couldnt believe it that EVERONE said it! Even random waitress's!
|
I myself have never said it before.
|
i think all Canadians' can blame "Strange Brew" for all the stereotypes about Canada
|
Quote:
/sarcasm ...And technically, east of the maritimes ~could~ be Newfoundland and Labrador, not considered a Maritime province... but still an Atlantic Province (and probably still wishing they hadn't caved in 1949). That being said, I say "eh" all the livelong day. |
"eh?" "Like" "Hella" "Wicked" "Ya'll"
All these regionalisms make a person sound uneducated. Sorry, but it's true. I have nothing against it, but it does communicate anything positive about you when you use it. |
Quote:
I wonder how many San Francisco lawyers use "hella" in their colloquial language but not in their legal briefs. Corollary: I wonder how many "Y'all" -speaking Southerners actually use "You all" (which is still a silly thing to say) periodically. |
I worked with a Canadian for a while and she said eh, even though she swore she didn't, I caught her a couple of times. She didn't say it as much as the sterotype type would suggest though, only once in awhile. Just my two bits...

Vancouver representing :)
