TFP, December, and how it affects you.

Here's the deal, people. The TFP server is gonna be making it's second trip across the Atlantic Ocean. We will be powering down at the end of the month and we will probably take a few weeks to get to DC, where we will be taken care of by our good friends ServInt.

We will be running the TFP on our old server as our beast makes the journey, however there is a difference between dual 1.8GHz and 500MHz P3. We are going to be disabling a few forums and features during this time, so you'll only be able to use the discussion forums.

Our good fortune has run out in Finland and our sysadmin is moving on, so we cannot have our hosting any more. Thus, we will be incurring a few extra costs each month.

Without the support of PayPal, our donations have dwindled severely. We have Yahoo PayDirect, which works for people in the US, and then we have our Snail Mail address. Please, people, if the TFP is worth it to you, help support us. Donation thread --> http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...=&threadid=718

That's really all for now. Thanks for readin'

************************UPDATE

WE ARE NOW RUNNING ON OUR BACKUP SERVER, FLOUNDER

SOME FEATURES HAVE BEEN TURNED OFF.

GuttersnipeXL 11-20-2003 01:40 PM

Ya do what ya have to do, right? I'm concerned about the old server though. Does anyone remember what happened right at the very end of Version 3.0? It is possible I have know idea what I'm talking about. Anyway, thanks for the heads up.

WhoaitsZ 11-20-2003 02:18 PM

blarg. welp, me whining won't make one single sollution or help in any fashion.

why happened with PayPal? I took a donation break lately. wtf is up?

i know basically nothing about pcs so if i'm asking something dumb just say so. aren't CPUs and MOBOs fairly cheap these days? a 2g cpu is like $90?

the discussion forums may still be up? what about the journals? chat?

sorry to throw so many questions at once. totally caught off guard

seretogis 11-20-2003 02:49 PM

Z: Chat is hosted elsewhere (by irvingnet) so I don't see why it would go down. If so it could easily be hosted, for free, on another IRC network.

I know we discussed this in IRC already, but I really think that ditching the free donation services and going with a voluntary monthly membership system by means of a CC-billing company (along with allowing personal checks by snail-mail) would be the best way to go.

quadro2000 11-20-2003 02:52 PM

It's like somebody just told me my crack dealer is going on vacation!

I'd also like to know if journals will be going down. That's gonna be a rough few weeks. But you do what you have to do. Thank you for letting us know, and I hope all goes well.

Now that I have donated, I feel much better about how much time I spend participating on TFP. I highly recommend it to everyone, it's good for the soul.

Silvy 11-20-2003 03:13 PM

Ok, that's it...

I don't have a CC, and I live in Europe. But -somehow- I will get some cash over there...

Hang in there Halx, another drop in the bucket is on the way :)

Btw: what's up with the server moving?

Sadly enough I feel the same. And now I feel a little pathetic. No offense.

Ahaha, 500mhz. Just disable the porn stuffs and at least half of your bandwidth will free up. Easy.

This is a great idea and, while I am a sporadic donor, if I had to pick between paying my bills and putting food on the table ...well, gee guess who is going to win.
I know it takes a lot of effort ( and cash ) to run this place but for the little people like me who struggle to raise their kids and take care of things...well, let's just say there is one reason I don't have a gym membership and it sure as heck isn't because I wouldn't use it every day.
I would hate to have my tfp cut off because I was late on my payment that month. :(
I try to give what I can - I hope it's enough......
waaaah...now I'm all bummed out!

edit.... *gasp* we aren't going to lose the journals are we??? Oh, say it isn't so!

Halx 11-20-2003 03:41 PM

journals dont take much processing power so they stay

what goes is likely to be the more explicit forums, but this is only for a half a month maybe

World's King 11-20-2003 04:03 PM

As long as I can keep making random pointless comments that get disregarded by the more "high-brow" members the I'll be fine.

Averett 11-20-2003 04:04 PM

I just made my first donation. I'm sure it won't be my last :)

oberon 11-20-2003 05:51 PM

I made my first on November 3rd. :)

gnort 11-20-2003 06:06 PM

Wow, it's times like these I hate being a poor college student. I'll try and rock some donations, but my budget may disagree with me.

sadistikdreams 11-20-2003 07:18 PM

i'll send 50$ in the mail...

spectre 11-20-2003 08:30 PM

I'll be sending in some cash next week.

To anyone who's worried about how much to send in or that they don't have enough, if you send in $5, that's $5 less that Hal has to pay. If you can afford more, it will be more than welcome. Remember, every little bit helps.

WhoaitsZ 11-20-2003 11:48 PM

Since I’m not a mod I can preach a little without sounding like a henchman.

I’ve donated about five times. why? Because this is a quality site that is not free to run but runs for us. To everyone to selfish to donate. . . well, I cannot be rude. Let’s just say I don’t like leaches. If this were a pay site or something it would be different. But it isn’t and nobody is turned away without reason. Not donating at least once is just a way to tell the mods ‘thanks for your loyalty to us, Now fuck off’.

This place gave me a home when I needed it. I’ve met people here who have seriously contributed heavily to my life in reality. I have met a fellow surviver, a man who showed me that not all intelligent people are snobbish assholess, I’ve met someone on her I plan to spend some time with next year if things continue to go as well. Most of all, I’ve found a place where most are slow to judge. If I’m miserably depressed I can whine in the journal or chat without complaint. If I’m overly hyper I am able to get rid of some of the energy without dealing with jerks.

Don’t get me wrong, this place is not perfect. Escaping assholes is not possible. I’m sure if you look in Heaven there will be at least one jerk. But the majority rock. And to Halx I give mad props because he’s taken a lot of criticism without dropping us. Most people will say ‘well, this is my place so fuck you’. I can imagine Halx doing it if he wanted, but he seems to listen to reason and tries to please everyone. Things piss me off at times here. So what? Life is like that.

So, guys, for free we’ve gotten great discussions. We’ve seen people show their bodies and artwork. We’ve seen tons of positive ways for people to learn and grow. And don’t forget the porn.

Donate if you like the place. One fucking dollar apiece could support this place.

Jimbob666 11-21-2003 02:23 AM

What happened with Paypal, that you no longer use them for donations?

Did someone say something????

Hahaha....just playing WK. I read all your pointless comments.

Halx, I will be sending more money soon. Probably within the next few days. Good luck with the move.

Bloodslick 11-21-2003 09:13 AM

I agree with Minx. My little family unit doesn't have any extra cash to go around. Even though I've only been here a few days, I'd hate to think that I'd suddenly get cut off because my personal finances are strapped.

I hope the move goes off without a hitch.

We are not able to use paypal to support TFP anymore due to their account policies.

YzermanS19 11-21-2003 05:23 PM

I'll donate again as soon as possible. I just don't have the funds right now. I either pay for tuition, books, and gas, or dont go to class at this point.

I need the class :)

Mephisto2 11-21-2003 05:58 PM

Well, not being in the US I can't use Yahoo Pay Direct.

I asked a few times if any mods had personal PayPall accounts to which I could transfer money, but no one even answered me.

I'm not going to put cash in an evelope and post it over. Methinks that's just too risky.

so when is Yahoo PayDirect going to accept non-US credit cards?!

Mr Mephisto

oberon 11-21-2003 06:28 PM

Is something wrong with sending a check? I dunno if that works across international boundaries, but I would expect it does??

Mephisto2 11-21-2003 06:45 PM

I don't have a cheque book, and haven't for years.

Sweet Jesus, I've been putting off for almost half a year. I even prepared an envelope for it. -_-. While I am stretched a bit with college, It's not going to hurt me to spare an extra 20 or 30 bucks for TFP.

For those of you I regularly talk to, please beat me with sticks until I stop procrastinating.

GakFace 11-22-2003 01:46 PM

The boards I post on most would probably be General, Paranoia, and Gaming.

JStrider 11-22-2003 01:48 PM

general, members playground, sexuality, health and fitness, how to, computers

those are my fav ones...

meff 11-22-2003 01:51 PM

What I'd like to see stay:

Sexuality
Living
Computers
Literature

Keep up the good work. :)

Member's Playground
Gaming
Entertainment.

Fire 11-23-2003 12:00 AM

I live in the land of the cash strapped myself, and so far thats stopped me from donating- but I got to thinking about it, and would hate to see this place go to a pay site- one of the cool things about it is that anyone can wander in and join up- even us poverty stricken types- anyway, I do not want to contribute to making Halx into a pov, so I have decided to forego Mcdonalds for a while and donate- think about it people- there are 32000 of us- and five bucks isnt much- some of us can't and thats all there is to it, but I for one have decided that I can make at least some allowences to help this place out.....

i8one2 11-23-2003 09:23 PM

No excuses here, I've been here for the ride, posted my stuff and met wonderfully interesting, bright, educated people with a mind and worlds to share..My $ is in the mail this week.

When the KING HALX calls, I answer, period.

PS...HALX, why don't you put a big notice up in the front/first/common page BANNER style for a couple of weeks, reiterating your point, I think it might really help in the cause. Just my 2 cents.

WhoaitsZ 11-23-2003 10:00 PM

right on, fire. point isn't kill yourself financially. and those who can't pay can't pay/ period. but i also knoww a bilion mega lame excuses to be a tight ass who enjoys free rides.

a pay site is the worse thing possible. at least if it died it'd keep my respect.

Midnight_Son 11-25-2003 12:20 PM

Halx, do whatever you need to do.
We’ll survive, we always do.

sbscout 11-27-2003 01:10 PM

snail mail works for me....

it'll be sent out this weekend!!

Dano069 11-30-2003 10:52 AM

Payment is on the way.

On a side note, I can read the journals but can't post.

laconic1 11-30-2003 02:38 PM

Well if my job interview last week went well, I should have my finances rebuilt enough to be able to start donating in February or March. Until then I have nothing to give financially.

Halx 11-30-2003 02:40 PM

You should be experiencing a little slowness for the next couple weeks. The server is moving. The TFP is now running on the backup server.

webfiend 11-30-2003 03:27 PM

Well heck, I've started seeing some good fortune come my way. Why not share the love? I'll have to get a Yahoo whatever-it-is account and send something along when I get another payment from my clients.

Batman976 11-30-2003 03:45 PM

I've considered donating on several occations, but I just can't fit it into my budget. I've got no job at the moment, and I can barely afford to feed myself. I'm sure once I find a job I'll scrape up some cash to donate. Until then, I'll just try to continue contributing by adding to the discussions when I can.

What can I say? I'm in college and broke. It sucks.

As previously stated, i suggest putting something on the main page, or even go so far as a popup (shock horror) to raise awareness of the plight of the TFP funds right now.

I only found out what happened from forum sections that a lot of people do not visit... so im pretty sure a lot pf people would be unaware of what the deal is and why the sections have been disabled.

How about some fundraisers?
"Free Kobe" shirts sell well...

Sorry, but I don't buy that 'i'm strapped for cash stuff'. I don't know anyone who can't afford to drop a few coins on a beer or some smokes or a stupid hat or something. Nobody's that strapped they can't send $5.

12-01-2003 03:19 AM

Halx, sending some cash snail mail soon.

Thanks to all mods!!!!!

merkerguitars 12-01-2003 06:43 AM

phew i was wondering why some of the forums and the search disappeared.....if I can survive everyone else can. I would advise to use liquordealers challenge of not using avatars if that would help any. That reminds me....I should donate again...every little bit counts...

brknkybrd 12-01-2003 09:03 AM

I miss being able to use Paypal, but they don't want their service used for "adult entertainment" (if I understand correctly).

I sent a personal check from my Canadian bank account (and I'm living in Korea!), and that seemed to work.

lowlight 12-01-2003 12:30 PM

gee i feel really shitty about being a leach so long. :( i'll do my best to get something to you Hal but most of my limited budget goes to the university. i grad in march so maybe if i get a job i could send some $$$.

hope its not too little too late....

cowudders14 12-01-2003 12:46 PM

Im interested that no-one has mentioned BitPass yet: https://www.bitpass.com/ - See the FAQ at https://www.bitpass.com/earn/FAQ/. This looks to me to be a better option than paypal, as anyone can use it. They accept payment from credit or debit cards, or paypal accounts. They charge:
There are no setup or monthly fees.
For items priced $0.01-$5.00, the transaction fee is 15%.
For items priced $5.00 and higher, the transaction fee is 5% + $0.50.

What does everyone think? This may be a better way of doing things now paypal has gone and given the constraints of yahoo. Me being in the UK isn't helpful! I will donate soon!

marcopolo 12-01-2003 02:06 PM

guest20 12-01-2003 03:51 PM

Can the Link Post Forum be returned?
I didn't think text as links took so much processing power / space..... ?

Just an idea.
Tfproject is by far the best forum.
I hope to donate soon.
Thanks for all your hard work.

Dale 12-01-2003 06:01 PM

Is that why no boobies threads? I have donated before and have been wanting to donate again, but my daughters have simply drained me. When they leave home they are more expensive than when they were in the house. I will try to send another $50.00 today if I can find it. This site is the best site BY FAR. None of the pay-sites even come close.

kukyfrope 12-01-2003 10:52 PM

donation on the way :)

eschmidt 12-01-2003 11:04 PM

You don't miss some forums until they're down for a while....... yes, I mean the TB. I can't live without it, it's like daily medicine for me! Sad that PayPal don't work within the US.

I still have 15 bucks from my last visit in the US, I could send it by mail to you Halx but I don't know if you get it. Here I can't even use it so it makes sense that my "doctor" gets the money........ where can I send it?

cheesemoney 12-02-2003 04:01 AM

Now I have to get all my porn from the avatars...

tangledweb 12-02-2003 05:53 AM

Thanks, Halx

Sounds reasonably interesting...
There isn't a lot of information on their site, but their payment system seems ok. Biggest problem I can see so far is that they are not accepting earners at this time, they have no info on wether or not they accept anyone as an earner (cfr PayPal's no-adult-content-policy), and they are still in beta stage...

I'd like for this to work (as I live outside the US as well), but I'm not buying their pre-paid cards yet...

*I wonder if Western Union money transfers will work

floonine 12-02-2003 08:35 AM

Yea. I have to agree with Hawkeye there. Many of the member, such as myself, attend college. I can barely afford to eat. I will donate, most likely after Christmas. But right now, I can't.

i am on a 56K most of the time, so it's not really worth it. I have better uses for the bandwidth, like downloading illegal music
and i find more interest in other threads anyway :D

Although i think my brother is using my account to look at the titty board and other restricted threads :( i can't persaude him to sign up and join in, he's just a voyeur.........

Wow, when I signed in I thought I did something bad and got banned before reading this thing.

Has anyone thought of starting a business type deal and having some of the profits donated to the TFP? I dunno.. I run this tax saving thing in Canada where I make a little money (don't ban me for posting a fundraising idea please). I figure if I sign up part the TFP crew - then help anyone who wants to save money on taxes, part of that money goes to me. I would be more than willing to donate all of this to keep the TFP alive. - Just a thought. (been working on this business for a bit, and it's already helping me pay for a lot) mods - send me an email if you'd like more info. (only affects Canadian members however, so everyone else think of something to help out too)

FYI on average, I help people save up to 50% on their taxes (Canadians get screwed when it comes to that), and make about an extra couple hundred bucks a week. It's nothing spectacular, and I don't know what your costs for bandwidth are these days, but like people said - every little bit helps.

To keep things going - I'm going to be sending you some funds via snail mail as well.

Like or not like my message - let me know either way, and I'll either set things up, or never mention it again.

P.S. Would you guys mind donations in Canadian Funds? (yeah, I know it's weird with the exchange, etc, but I'm only trying to help)

Halx

Do you think you can accept via a biil pay from a bank. Maybe you can set up account numbers so funds can come directly from any bill pay systems.

I do know there are some new technologies coming very soon that will allow people to send $$ from phone number to phone number, but since it is not ready yet, I guess its meaningless. $$ will be coming....

To get around the paypal "non-adult" situation, why don't you start a related "clean" company, get contributions to that one, and just transfer the money to the TFP?

Or maybe that's the accountant in me thinking.

WhiteDevil 12-06-2003 09:15 PM

No porn? NO PORN!?!?!?! AHHHHHH!!!!
Curse you cruel fate! Why must you mock me?!?!

ADM 12-07-2003 11:12 AM

I really wish I had more money laying around, would love to send 20 bucks to the cause.

BUt, alas, no bling bling. :(

tard 12-07-2003 09:55 PM

wish I were able to send you something, but XMas is a tough time. Maybe after the new year...

~springrain 12-08-2003 07:06 AM

Come on people... no one here would think twice about dropping $20-$25 for a couple of drinks, that new DVD you've been dying for, lunch or dinner out, or a Christmas gift for a dear friend.

The TFP is a community that is like family. If you can't donate even $5-$10 for the dear friend that is the TFP... I think you need to re-evaluate your priorities and what the TFP really means to you.

*tossing in my 2 cents and another donation via Yahoo*

One more thing that may have been covered before, but I thought I would throw out there....

The search functions have also been disabled....

Thanks for the info JD

I'll kick in $100.00 if I can mail a check. What's the address? And who do I make it out to?

Actually yeah, that's the idea I can continue on. :D

Since Hal has the Stick Figure Peepshow running on the side, he could ask that TFP'ers donate by Paypal through there. Because to my knowledge, that forum does not have any of fore mentioned and has always been clean.

But then he'd probably have a hard time relaying the info between what member @ which forum donated in order to give out Donor status.

I'd make seperate links. ;)
