Ever been in a helicopter?

Just wondering how many of us have actually ridden in a helicopter? I would love to someday.

sillygirl 11-04-2003 06:02 PM

Not yet. But I plan on rapelling (sp sucks, btw) off of one someday. :D

pocon1 11-04-2003 06:07 PM

Yes, rode in high school, went to a military academy and a local guard unit brought several hueys out for the students to ride in. The second time my wife and I did a flight over the Grand Canyon, which was neat.

edited so as to not offend certain people's political correctness.

dogzilla 11-04-2003 06:09 PM

Yes, many years ago I took a helicopter tour over Niagra Falls. I've also been in helicopters once or twice as a kid.

Esoteric 11-04-2003 06:22 PM

No, but I'd like to someday.

Baldrick 11-04-2003 06:29 PM

Yup, quite a bit when I was younger. My Dad flew in 'copters quite often for his job, and he brought me with me every now and then. If you ever get a chance, take it!

crfpilot 11-04-2003 06:49 PM

yep, a few times. UH-1 "Huey" a couple times and dangled by a rope from a CH-46 at about 1000-1500 feet.

WarWagon 11-04-2003 07:38 PM

Yep, when I lived in CT I was 5 minutes from the Sikorsky plant.

heyal256 11-04-2003 08:04 PM

I've been in a helicopter once. It was a business trip from NYC to Hartford, CT. I would have tried for a few more trips but this "perk" of the job got killed due to budget reasons.

ledhead 11-04-2003 08:22 PM

i here riding in a helicopter is quite trippy.

Gungwhooza 11-04-2003 08:54 PM

I went on a ride in air cadets. It was really fun...it had guns and everything. Nothing like a little air cadet nookies flying over the city :D

Jonsgirl 11-04-2003 09:36 PM

I've actually been several times. It's great!
The best sleep I've ever gotten has been in a UH-60, too.
And in some ways, they're the best damn part of my job.

thenewguy 11-04-2003 10:13 PM

I rode in one on a tourist trip over Kauai, HI. It was the most amazing experience. I am afraid of flying and falling and I wasn't scared for a second.

I would highly recommend you take a trip. Now about all that bullshit hanging from ropes or gliding or whatever those other guys were saying up there - screw that. But the helicopter part is a-mazing.

Hrothgar 11-04-2003 11:00 PM

My uncle is a helicopter pilot so I got to go out with him on some of his job sites. Very cool feeling.

Fremen 11-04-2003 11:30 PM

I haven't flown in one, but they fly over my home quite often.

Ever since first watching M.A.S.H. in the 70's, I've wanted to fly in one.

Does anybody know what type they used in the series?

ARTelevision 11-05-2003 02:24 AM

Yes, I've been in a helicopter several times and it is quite thrilling. Hovering over the battlefield at Gettysburg is one of those memorable experiences I have had in helicopters.

bundy 11-05-2003 03:09 AM

i would love to ride in a helicopter.
but only if it was for fun, and not because of some accident.
i can imagine someone wishing all their lives to travel in a chopper, only to have their first flight in one because of tragey...

that must be quite a site from a birds-eye-view. i´ve seen that battlefield from the ground and it was impressive.

wannabenakid247 11-05-2003 03:56 AM

no but i would love to as well.

Destrox 11-05-2003 05:01 AM

I've been in one, just as the pole ask.

But it never left the ground :)

(Your poll and question are two diff things :) ) voted no.

onetime2 11-05-2003 05:06 AM

Yes. Flew in one that the Marine recruiters brought to campus in college (civilian two seater don't remember the make). And then a CH-53 Sea Stallion while at Quantico.

quadro2000 11-05-2003 06:15 AM

Took a helicopter ride in Kauai. Most of Kauai is not accessible by car so helicopter is the best way to see the island. It was a lot of fun although VERY loud and a little nauseating.

John Falcon 11-05-2003 06:37 AM

Been in a UH-1 at Fort McMuffin, AL.

yournamehere 11-05-2003 06:52 AM

As a kid - once at the county fair; once at Niagra Falls.
As an adult - once in Kauai ; once on a site visit during a business trip in Mexico.

It's truly a thrilling experience.

Peetster 11-05-2003 07:35 AM

Over 4000 hours as a Helicopter Aircraft Commander (HAC). It had its ups and downs. ;-)

Craven Morehead 11-05-2003 07:56 AM

Very cool experience, like what I would imagine being on a flying carpet would be. Flew over the lava flowing into the ocean on the big island, Hawaii.

G_Whiz 11-05-2003 07:57 AM

Interesting. With 42 votes, there is an exact 21/21 spilt.

I've been in helicopters a few times. The most exciting/fun was the first time when I was in the the Navy in the 60s. We flew over a couple of islands in Hawaii and landed on a carrier deck.

Gortexfogg 11-05-2003 08:12 AM

I've rode in a helicopter once, and that was on the way to the hospital. It was a actually a pretty cool experience as I remember it.

jvwgtr 11-05-2003 09:18 AM

I would love to ride in one.
I've been tempted to jump on one of those Orlando helicopters where they take you straight up and back down for like $20, just to say I've been in one...but really I'd like to do it right, and fly over the Grand Canyon or something.

supafly 11-05-2003 09:19 AM

No, but i like to try it sometime.

Hornero 11-05-2003 09:54 AM

Yes a couple of times, and one of these carrying an aircraft turbine to be replaced to an aircraft forced to landing near the Amazon.

Orodinn 11-05-2003 10:18 AM

I heard they're building an helicoptor with an ejector seat.

damhna 11-05-2003 10:26 AM

Used to take this to work :

I went up in one at a (large) county fair many years ago. I think he took us up about 500 feet and circled around the grounds. It was really fun. I'd do it again if given the chance.

Sapper 11-05-2003 12:12 PM

I'd love the chance ...

If I recall, there have been helos with ejector seats for quite some time. It was the Russians that did it first, IIRC. The pilots were pretty wary of them because the rotors had to be released with explosive bolts first, and they were worried that the bolts wouldnt fire, and things could get messy.

I havent flown in a helicopter before, but would love to. My uncle used to fly them, and he says they are the closest thing to really feeling like you are flying you can get without sprouting some wings. It is probably best to fly one for someone else though (like the army) because helicopters require a LOT of maintenance. Do it for the army, and someone does all of the maintenance for you.

Hopefully the same amount of each!
I have been in a helicopter a bit, and next Febuary I have been promised a ride in a chinook. Also get to do some air cadet training jumping out of chinooks carrying rifles (me, not the chinook) in a years time or so. It is all good.
EDIT:
Yeah, some military copters do have ejector seats, they blast the bolts off. The pilots I have spoken to still say that they wouldn't trust them.

Snakebyt 11-05-2003 02:22 PM

i rode in one when i was a little kid... was pretty neat

hansthemolemann 11-05-2003 02:27 PM

I rode on one about five years ago, a friend of the family is a helicopter mechanic and he got us free tickets. That was my first time flying too.

GoldenOuroboros 11-05-2003 03:08 PM

When I was just a wee brat.. prolly one of my earliest memories.. don't know what it was tho, but my dad was the pilot and we were flying out over the trees.. I was strapped in the back compartment with the rest of my family and the crew.. just looked out of the open compartment (army/airforce helicopter) and dangled my legs off the seat.. was good fun.. hehe.. :D

tommyboy 11-05-2003 04:00 PM

yup, hundreds of times in the corps

Yep. It was a Bell H-13 Sioux.

cliv 11-05-2003 07:48 PM

Just recently went to my state fair and flew in a helicopter! I loved it been flying many times but that was a unique experience! If you have a chance do it!

Eldaire 11-06-2003 06:24 PM

Just watch out for those damn helicopter eating monkeys.

carpal 11-06-2003 06:55 PM

No helicopters, but I was in a two passenger biplane once. It didn't have any windows but the pilot still thought it would be good to do some dives. A fun experience to say the least.

punx1325 11-06-2003 10:20 PM

I was 6 or 7 when I rode in one. It was fun but nothing special, I need to try parachuting...

Sun Tzu 11-07-2003 12:29 AM

More times than I can remember while serving in the military. I've was never able to totally relax; it sounded like bolts were coming loose every time.

Dilbert1234567 11-07-2003 12:43 AM

only in simulators.

santafe5000 11-08-2003 04:03 PM

Flown in them many times. Few trips in Vietnam and I was on a helicopter carrier(USS Tripoli) for two years and flew a number of times from there. UH-1's and CH-46's Haven't flown in a civilian one tho.

Nice carpal! I'd pay real money to do that! :D

mingusfingers 11-09-2003 12:53 AM

Ahh, I'm still in the supportive, comforting, boring majority. I want to go on a helicopter.

tangledweb 11-09-2003 07:55 AM

My old friend's dad flew a news chopper when he retired from the service. We used to get to sneak on a trip every once in a while.

The first time I flew on one, I didn't much like it but later trips were much more fun.

71classic 11-09-2003 08:47 AM

Many times in the service. My service assignment was flying crew chief. When with the right pilot and doing the right menuveres, there isn't a roller coaster in town that can beat them.

Speed_Gibson 11-09-2003 12:56 PM

never have ridden in a helicopter but have been a passenger on a mail/cargo plane (forget the exact model, was usually below decks in engineering) taking off from an aircraft carrier on the cats.

Angel 11-09-2003 02:28 PM

Nope. I'm kinda afraid of the thought actually. I had the opportunity once and I chickened out.
*walks away with head hung in shame*

Sensei 11-09-2003 02:32 PM

I would have gone on one of those scenic helicopter rides if they weren't so damn expensive.

hunnychile 11-09-2003 04:33 PM

One of the best "highs" I've ever had and I'm ha a LOT of fun.

A must in Kaui over the falls near the scene where the opening for Jurassic Park occurred. It's a great time and worth the price!

id like to fly in a helicoptor .. maybe one day i will!

mml 11-11-2003 02:31 PM

Several times - very cool. The best way to see Hawaii.(Kawai)

jujueye 11-12-2003 09:38 AM

Took a circle-island tour of Kauai. Beautiful. The pilot was ex-military and had more time to show us stuff than most 'tours'. Once the tour was over, he had to take a quick trip up to a weather station on the top of a mountain. We made it up there (with the weather guy) in mere minutes (yow!) and I was completely amazed as the pilot held the rig at the edge of this peak....totally.....still...with updrafts coming on all around. Really cool.

Anyway, highly recommended.

HALDONIA 11-12-2003 11:42 AM

Jam 11-12-2003 01:13 PM

nope, but ive been in an f-18 hornet (on the ground) on a military base

Psivage 11-12-2003 07:03 PM

I don't remember if I ever had, I do remember when I was younger about 13-14 or so, I looked out the window and helicoptered landed in our field, it was fucking cool, my dad got a ride it by this guy who was newscopter pilot, nice guy a fews year later in die while flying the copter. I was sad.

joesmith 11-12-2003 10:30 PM

rode in one when i was about 5 -loved t - scared of heights now - dunno if i could.

MeltedMetalGlob 03-25-2011 08:03 PM

BadNick 03-26-2011 10:45 AM

I wonder if I was around 8 years ago when this thread was started? But I never posted in this thread.

I've been a few times, for pleasure though, not a military purpose (thank you to all of our service people for your sacrifice!) My most memorable was when I took my daughter, who was almost 7 years old at that time, on her first heli ride. We got on up the Niagara River in NY. As we approached the copter with all the noise and whirring I was carrying her and he tightly clutched me around the neck, obviously a bit scared. We sat down next to the pilot since it was a small glass dome front helicopter like one of those Bell copters. As soon as we lifted off the ground, her eyes lit up and a giant smile came across her face :) We hovered over the river heading downstream and you could see how the rapids started to develop, getting more and more formented, and then suddenly it was like the earth dropped out from under us and we were over Niagara Falls...very dramatic view and approach to the Falls.

Not my pics, but to give you the flavor:

You know how zoo's have signs that say "Don't Feed the Animals"? The same thing applies for hillbillies. You're just enabling them.

Given that I know where Whear's Valley, Mirey Ridge, Townsend and The Y and that Sevier County High School has a purple track with solid, rainbow-colored exchange zones and where Uncle Lem's place was, I get to say that.

Vertical reference...Basically either look straight down or line up something with the skid.
