i'm one of those understated sarcastic types with a very dry sense of humor... my sarcasm sounds like insults to most people, so i kind of have it hard... i'm constantly reminding people that i'm kidding... it takes the fun out of it, really...

It's not truly "sarcasm" unless your words have some (at least vaguely) ill intent behind them. The original comment about the compass is just a joke posing as a serious comment -- it might pass for "ironic" but I don't think it was "sarcastic."

"I love you too"

Omg, that happens to me all the time. I laugh everytime and never ceases to crack me up. I think it's a lack of humor.

Easiest among friends and spoken out loud. But not IMPOSSIBLE to do with strangers or typed - just exceedingly difficult.

I saw this comic the other day:

My quite sarcastic friend once said to the petrol attendant " im sure my petrol tank is getting bigger" as she paid for the petrol he replied "no the price of petrol is rising" as if she had been serious. What a numpty! I think he must have thought she was stupid. I laughed at that though.

On that gas station note, a few pals an I were road tripping from northern Illinois where i live to the southern tip and down into MI (about a 6-7 hour drive). We were in roughly south-center of Illinois neither closer to the East nor West border of the state and stopped to fill up. While inside getting snacks I made the snide remark "Gee I sure do miss Illinois" in a blatently joking manner, the pals had a chuckle and the 16 yr old girl behined the counter yelled "YOU"RE STILL IN ILLINOIS" rather rudely in my face. We were somewhat shocked as it was pretty obvious I was kidding. We still make joking refrences to that night about 1.5 years ago to this day...I kinda felt sorry for her if she was really that dense...

However, it may entertain the person who uses it - often at the explicit or implied expense of the recipient(s).

If you feel highly motivated to employ sarcasm as a method of communication, it's best used among friends.

And of course, in typing on the Internet, it is typically problematic.

To answer your question directly, not since I was in college.
At some point, I decided it wasn't how I wanted to be (mis)understood.

I happen to be an extremely sarcastic person, and often I need to watch myself on the forums because it is so difficult to convey certain personalities over the interweb.

Anyhow, entertaining post... carry on :)

I'm very professional when I'm at work (Electronics in Walmart), but sometimes I have to say off-the-wall stuff because I can't help it. Some fellow employees who aren't too bright were asking me which blank VHS tapes to buy, and I told them not to get RCA tapes, because if they didn't have an RCA VCR it would set their VCR on fire. I didn't say it with a different tone of voice, but that is so over the top that I didn't think anyone could believe it, but they did. I had to tell them that I was pretty sure no VHS tape will set their VCR on fire.

That sort of thing happens to me all the time. I always feel so bad afterward too. Even something simple like, "I hate you," (and you all know you can say that sarcastically) will make you feel so bad if someone misinterperets. Even after you explain yourself, you still feel like a dousche.
