From The Good News dept: Panda is a dirty slut!

Ok.. maybe not such a slut.. but I felt like we needed some trivial yet non-depressing news stories.

BEIJING - A 19-year-old panda has given birth to her 13th cub at a breeding center in China's southwest, setting a new record for fertility among the rare animals, the official Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday.

The birth Tuesday was the fourth reported in captivity worldwide in just four days.

The cub born to the panda Qing Qing was the 11th reported this year in China, where only about 1,000 pandas live in the wild. There are 140 in captivity.

Experts believe Qing Qing's cub is the first of a set of twins, and the second should be born soon, Xinhua said, citing Yu Jiangqiu, vice director of the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding and Research Center.

The center is in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province, which is home to most pandas in the wild.

"It is really a great achievement for giant pandas (to) become pregnant while in captivity," Yu was quoted as saying.

A panda named Mei Mei gave birth Monday to twins at the Shirahama Zoo in Wakayama, Japan.

On Saturday, a 13-year-old panda named Ya Ya had a female cub at the Chengdu center, Xinhua said.

19 years old and 13 panda's already? Damn thats alot (especially when there are only 150 in capacity). I'm Amazed.

"I felt like putting a bullet through the head of every panda that wouldn't fuck to save it's species."

I think this girl is safe.

hahahahaha. This one is definately preserver life :)

For a human to breed the same percentage of the human population as this panda did with the panda population, she'd need to have 88,200,000 kids, figuring the human population is 6.3 billion and the panda population is 1000. BTW, both population numbers I used are slighly lower than actual, so this is an estimate, if you are picky.

awww how cute is twin baby pandas!

Just a little off topic, I thought I would point out something that has been puzzling me.

I have seen pandas at three zoos in the states: Washington, San Diego, and Atlanta. In every case, the animals are slothlike in their activity. I thought that is what they are like.

A few months ago, I got to see several pandas at a zoo in Chongking (not too far from Chengdu) and was amazed at how active the Pandas were. One never stopped roaming its habitat while we where there. Maybe that has something to do with why the pandas over here never seem to be successful at breeding.

dont they have aids or any std's for panda's that are loose?

I think its because evey news agency recycles the same damn footage of pandas over and over again. The cameraman probably caught them just waking up. :D

That's neat. Pandas are cool. Not as cool as Koalas, but pretty cool nonetheless.

It's "wouldn't screw to save its species," but that only shows what a Fight Club geek I am.

George Carlin once said:

"And let me ask you this, the two pandas in the zoo, do you care if they fuck? I don't. Why don't they stop telling me on the news the pandas didn't fuck again this year. I don't care, I have no emotional stake in panda fucking. If they want to they will, if they don't, they'll watch The Price is Right."

the world needs more Pandas, yay!

RoadRage 09-20-2003 12:52 PM

Maybe the damn things are finally evolving. Now if they'll start eating something besides bamboo…

David2000 09-20-2003 04:18 PM

What's wrong with AI? (Artificial Insemination)? I think if they used that we could get a lot more pandas.

cetacean 09-20-2003 08:05 PM

They do use AI with some success... I have actually done work on mapping Giant Panda Habitat in China, and the problem is that there is not much habitat left for them. Historically, pandas migrate up and down mountains as different bamboos are in season. They are severely restricted to extremely steep mountains now that have remained natural now only because they are so inaccessible. This is the problem with many endangered species. If there is no viable habitat to return to, we are just mating them for our amusement.

Pandas are big money in the US, zoos actually rent each Panda for around a million a year. And if they have a cub, the rent goes up. It is in the interest of the Chinese to keep Pandas reproducing so they can keep making money on them.

There are many huge environmental problems in China. Just check out the three gorges dam and use of illegal wild animal products such as tiger bones. I am just going on and on, but there is a lot going on that most are unaware of...
