What's the best program to use to send resumes?

Besides Microsoft Word, which I guess is the norm, but I can't use it, is there another program I can use to send my resumes to companies?

I like MS Word, but there have been times where my resume didn't end up as I sent it. Meaning, Word did not keep the format on someone else's computer. My guess is that their settings were different. I now do both - .doc format and .pdf format. Acrobat Reader is free and most or many people have it or can easily get it. I have found sending it as .pdf file saves in KB used as well as maintaining the original format you had.

could use Open Office to save your resume as a PDF file. Any of the 1.1beta or RC builds have that feature (1.1RC4 is the latest currently and rock solid stable in my experience). That is free, and I am not aware of a free legal version of the acrobat PDF writer software. Feel free to correct me or point something out that I may have missed.

I also use PDF files. They are much cleaner looking, and they can not be changed easily by the recipients.

I once wrote my resume as a Windows Help file :-)

It was viewable by anyone with Windows from 3.1 to XP. You need no additional viewer etc. But you do require some knowledge of how to create the files.

It was more like a web page than a document however.

Probably PDF is the best portable document format today.

You can also send them as a ".rtf"
Rich Text Format

A greater number of word processors will accept that,
if they won't do the ".doc" format of Word.

For PDF conversion try www.pdfmoto.com

And I use Abiword:

A stripper gram, with your resume written on her/him. Depending if employer is male/female.

If you're not going to use PDF, you could also use HTML. It's not quite as good with the formatting, but this way you can post it on your webspace and also email it out as an HTML file which everyone SHOULD be able to view.

I know you wrote that you cannot use Microsoft Word. I would recommend you find a way to do so.

Employers often take the resumes they have received and stash them in one folder. Then the rename them according to your last, then first name to prepare to compare them.

I would find some way to use the format (MS Word) that most businesses and HR departments use. Otherwise, its pretty easy for your resume to get "lost." Remember, while it does sometimes pay to be innovative and stick out, you can also shoot yourself in the foot by not getting considered at all.

MS Office is available at a HUGE discount (like fifteen bucks) to all college students. If you're not one, you have got to know one. Spending one-hundred and fifty for Office is a bitch, but you should be able to get it for fifteen.

A lot of places I've seen require plain 'ol plain-text. If you wanna be really bad ass, typeset it in LaTeX and give them a PDF.
