Dentist Experiences..

Anyone ever have a really bad Dentist experience or know someone that has?.

Just asking becuase I had to get two fillings today and it made me think about it.

Before this I had not been to get a cleaning in like two years because of my other dentist. 3-4 of my appointments were canceled by them and it was near impossible to schedual anything. So I was finally able to go to a different dentist, and I had to even though they dont take my insurance =/

Now I'm not saying I couldn't have had a little better brushing habbits or floss ect. But these could have been caught a lot sooner if I had been able to get a damn appointment. I hav ealways had perfect teeth before this.

Anyone else ever have a bad experience?

I use to have this floride coating treatment done when i was a kid.

The last two times the dentist let a student do it.
The sloppy bastard wasn't using the vaccum thingy properly, wasn't paying any attention to what he was doing, so I was choking on floride the whole procedure.

I told my mother I didn't want it done again and she canceled those treatments. I hadn't explained why. She probally would have told the dentist not to let students loose on me instead.

I had a dentist attempt to give me a root canal. He's drilled down to the base of the crown of the tooth, fishing around with a filament, looking at the x-rays, the tooth, and just poking down there. He seemed to have found what he was looking for, and happily drilled away. Unfortunately, the searing, white-hot pain he released into my head told me something was wrong. He had drilled down into the crown of the tooth, thinking he had found one of the canals to remove the nerve from. What he found was an indentation he had made while drilling out the central portion of the tooth. So instead of safely navigating down a bone canal, he had drilled straight through the base of the tooth, into the gumline, and the jawbone itself.

Suffice to say I found another dentist. The damage he did took nearly six months+ to repair by a competent professional.

Getting a tooth pulled, i had one molar pulled because it had a puss pocket over it and first of all the fucker did not allow the novacaine to sink in and just started yankin' on my tooth, felt like the damn thing was a rubber band, then the bastard had the nerve to tell me it did not hurt.....I was like, bullshit you get down here and let me yank on your tooth...FUCKER..

If you have not noticed, I hate the dentist!

I,ve got a damn crown that has been replaced twice and it took three attempts to get it close to corect the first time. It still is'nt right, but I'm tired of screwing with my stupid dentist.

First hard point: Getting a damn appointment.
Second hard point: Waiting forever to be seen.

And last but not least, when I got about 6 shots in my mouth until I went numb.. And eghh how it feels! It's like the damn needle is going through your cheek! :(

Dentists are evil.

Haven't had that horrible ex[eriences.
I had my first cavity filled couple months ago. It was a small one, so no anesthetic(sp). It hurt, but not that bad, but the tooth dust and smell were horrible. It wasn't that bad, just I hated it.
Also, ortho work. I had this thing called a herbst appliance. Corrects a massive overbite, and screwed me up real bad. I HATED that thing.

When I had a couple of wisdom teeth removed (pre coming in), the dentist must have slipped with the knife a little, cause when the freezing came out there were a couple of stitches on the inside of my cheek.

No big deal really, except he had intertwined the stitches in the gum, and the two were attached until the stitches dissolved. I'm sure I could have gone back and quickly had him fix it, but I left on a 5 day hiking trip that evening before the freezing properly came out.

My worst were when I was a child. Like 7 years old, the dentist was talking about putting a hook under my tooth and attaching it via rubber band to the roof of my mouth to help it come out. This was the same guy who asked me "would you like it to hurt a lot for a short time or a little for a longer time?"

*shudder*

I think the worst experience I've ever had was actually after the dentist. I was about 16 and I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed. Everything went fine. After I woke up, I had my mom drive me home. We made it outside to the parking lot when I got this really bad craving for apple juice. But she wouldn't stop by a store and get some. She offered to stop at McDonalds and get me a shake, instead. I started crying because I didn't see why she would stop at McDonalds but not at a gas station to get me some juice. I think I cried most of the way home, but I never did get my apple juice, lol.

Edit: I never did learn to spell, either.

Never had a good Dentist experience. They are either way too exspensive or the treatment doesn't work. Usually both. I have never experienced real pain at the hands of a dentist but right now I have a tooth that is nothing more than a rotting stump because the $1500 (that doesn't include the $1500 the insurance company shelled out) cap one dentist did didn't last more than a year and I refuse to spend more money on it. I have one tooth that hurts a lot but I have paid at least $1000 to have three different dentist fill it.

Teeth suck, you'd think evolution would have given us a better setup than this... What did people do back in the day when they got tooth problems? For some reason I don't think that resiansse dentistry would have been much more fun than what we are doing :-/

My mom once had the anestesia go to her brain. What happened was that she was getting part of one of her front teeth replaced. Well the dentist hit a nerve going to her brain and it went there. Her head felt numb but that was all that happened. The dentist said she was lucky and unlucky. Lucky because it didn't kill her and unlucky because that is extremely rare.

LutherMac 09-18-2003 04:10 PM

I've actually had my two front teeth worked on once, I vow never to go through with that again! The novacaine shot was put into my gumline right under my nose... and I could feel the needle poking around where it wasn't supposed to be. Talk about excruciating. The thing that really sucks is that when he capped the tooth, there was a stain that has YET to go away (that was over 10 years ago). He also informed me that my wisdom teeth would need to be pulled soon..... I never went back.

what?

Dude, really what is a dentist, Britain represent!!!!!!!

ironx 09-19-2003 01:16 AM

my experience was really bad

it aren't the tooth that went under the knife hurt - my damn mouth/jaws/lips hurt. damn assholes use some kinda elastic plastic thinggy, sorta like a clamp, stick it into my mouth. it was suppose to force me to open my mouth wider. Japanese sex toy comes to mind.

And hell, my lips and jaws went numb.

Interesting thread. As some of you know, I'm a dentist and I cringe at the thought of what other moron dentists have done to unsuspecting patients. A few bad ones have created an entire atmosphere of fear and it's not right.

Anyways, although most people only hear of the bad situations, there are plenty of folks who adore their dentists and there are plenty of dentists who do top quality work. You just gotta find them.

:)

umm my dad's a dentist so really the only bad experience(since i've only gone to dentists for teeth cleanings and braces) is the constant beratement to brush the fuck up so i don't shame my dad.I also once helped him work on a patient(it was minor surgery and most assitants are trained by dentists anyways ) and when my dad started drilling on the guy to remove his tooth this guys blood flipped up right on my bottom eye lid(i had glasses and a mouth gard but it came in at the right angle) luckily it didn't seep in my eye but it scared the fuck out of me since i had to keep working for a nother ten minutes or so.

I had a very strange experience with my family's [former] dentist. One visit he told me that I had "fine aryan breeding." He said, "So does your sister. Neither of you will need braces." None of my family every went back to him.

my dental assistant wouldn't stop bitching at me about how competitive my high school was. She kept complaining that her son had too much homework and too many extracurriculars and was overworked. It was at that point that I realized that america's problem with education was due to the schools or the teachers, but rather the parents.
I also had a really messed up cavity ridden tooth that had to get pulled. That really hurt.

manalone 09-22-2003 11:54 AM

I have, it seems, very sensitive nerves in my teeth. I need quite a bit more novocaine than usual.

This is bad because it means I always end up biting my cheek badly. The flow of blood in my mouth always freaks me out a lil.

sailor 09-22-2003 07:23 PM

I am in the lucky position in that my dentist is a very close personal friend, who grew up with my father. He is a great guy, never had any problems.

*Shudder* I hate novacaine... I hate the aftereffects, feeling all numb and drooling all over yourself, not to mention the sight of someone cramming a huge needle in my mouth isnt the most pleasant thing to behold. Last time I had a cavity drilled, I did it without novacaine. It didnt hurt as bad as I thought it would, but I certainly left some nice hand-shaped indentations on the arm of the chair. I wish there was some other form of anasthesia that didnt leave one feeling so nasty after it is done.

Hmm, let's see. First dentist used to smoke while I was in the room with him. He pulled a tooth that didn't have a permanent tooth underneath it. Had another dentist, female this time, try to pull out a permanent bridge during a checkup. Listen, I give these people ENOUGH money as it is, I don't need them trying to make more business by "testing" my bridge. Too bad though, she was a looker! She had the most beautiful green eyes. I've had root canals, bridges, caps, crowns and all other assorted dentistry done. Never had any infection or pain problems. Lucky me, I guess.
