Fifty Nifty United States

Did anyone else sing this song in Elementary School? I was just at the Post Office and saw a sheet of stamps with every state name on it. It reminded me of this song.

"Fifty Nifty United States
From thirteen original colonies.
Fifty Nifty stars in the flag,
That billow so beautifully in the breeze."

I still remember this after 20 years!!

God of Thunder 09-10-2003 11:28 AM

No, but I can still recite all of the words from "Conjunction Junction".

Hah, now that song's stuck in your head:lol:

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-10-2003 11:37 AM

Holy crap!! I was just thinking of that old song maybe a week ago. We sang it in the 5th grade, I think it was. That would have been...oh...1972-1973. I hadn't thought of it in years, before last week. What a coincidink.

World's King 09-10-2003 01:09 PM

No clue what your'e about.

I went to a very Anti-American elementry school. We hung the flag up-side-down and hated everyone. They taught us all about communism and Hitler.

*continues to make up his past*

And once I flew around the world by myself only useing my own urine for fuel.

Those School House Rocks were done by serious musicians. I can't think of any names right now. There is a box set with all of the songs in there. I am partial to the parody the Simpson's did.
I know most of the words... it is awesome.

Redlemon 09-10-2003 01:34 PM

There's also a DVD of the entire collection.

bundy 09-10-2003 01:58 PM

yeah, we even sang that one down here in Australia.

we also recite your pledge every morning.

these are new laws enacted by our new president.

seriously, we used to sing Waltzing Matilda a lot... and i guess we sang the national anthem every now and again... but thats about as patriotic as my school got. we never had the national flag flying in my prep school, just the school flag.

IckUber 09-10-2003 01:59 PM

Sorry man, never heard of it, Oh well maybe cause im only 20.

yournamehere 09-10-2003 07:33 PM

Never heard that one - but we learned a song in 5th grade naming all the states in alphabetical order - and I still remember it.

Of course - back then - there were only, like, a few.

koli70 09-10-2003 07:54 PM

sbscout 09-11-2003 01:00 AM

remember 50 nifty... from 30 years ago!!

Midlandmadman 09-11-2003 05:09 AM

That song is the reason I know all the states alphabetically. It was 4th grade for me. Thats about..... 29 years ago..... damn I'm getting old!!!!!

.... Each individual state, contributes a quaility that is great!
Each individual state, deserves a bow, 1, 2,
Let's salute them now... da da da da daaaa da.

Gortexfogg 09-11-2003 05:29 AM

Yea, I remember the fifty nifty United States song. My whole elementry school used to sing it in the cafeteria at assemblys. Hard to forget such powerful words...

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, how's that function?
I got three favorite cars
That get most of my job done.
Conjunction Junction, what's their function?
I got "and", "but", and "or",
They'll get you pretty far.

"And":
That's an additive, like "this and that".
"But":
That's sort of the opposite,
"Not this but that".
And then there's "or":
O-R, when you have a choice like
"This or that".
"And", "but", and "or",
Get you pretty far.

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up two boxcars and making 'em run right.
Milk and honey, bread and butter, peas and rice.
Hey that's nice!
Dirty but happy, digging and scratching,
Losing your shoe and a button or two.
He's poor but honest, sad but true,
Boo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo!

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up two cars to one
When you say something like this choice:
"Either now or later"
Or no choice:
"Neither now nor ever"
Hey that's clever!
Eat this or that, grow thin or fat,
Never mind, I wouldn't do that,
I'm fat enough now!

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up phrases and clauses that balance, like:
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
He cut loose the sandbags,
But the balloon wouldn't go any higher.
Let's go up to the mountains,
Or down to the sea.
You should always say "thank you",
Or at least say "please".

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up words and phrases and clauses
In complex sentences like:

Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
Hooking up cars and making 'em function.
Conjunction Junction, how's that function?
I like tying up words and phrases and clauses.
Conjunction Junction, watch that function.
I'm going to get you there if you're very careful.
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
I'm going to get you there if you're very careful.
Conjunction Junction, what's your function?
I'm going to get you there if you're very careful.

So, "Consumption Junction, what's your dysfunction?" from http://www.consumptionjunction.com/ is a parody of this song?
