Post Count Disappeared!

I don't know if this is (was) a temporary glitch, or an error at my end, but as of 6:45 p.m. CST, all post count information has disappeared from members' posts.

Did you get tired of us bitching about our lost avatars, Halx?

unknownmf 04-24-2003 03:44 PM

yeh i just noticed that too. I think that Hal just took them away from under our names (on the left). Because if you click on Profile your post count is there. It is kinda good like this because then you dont have to worry or want to catch up to someone with a higher post count.

Halx 04-24-2003 03:45 PM

Dont worry about it :)

Just post quality posts.

yournamehere 04-24-2003 03:54 PM

That's our Halx - always stirring the pot!

Grondar 04-24-2003 03:55 PM

I don't miss post counts.

I am thinking they still may be stored, but just aren't visibile.

Either way, I am thinking there will be less post padding now, even though it didn't seem like that was a huge issue here anyway...

Hycdubg 04-24-2003 03:56 PM

I noticed it too and briefly lost my will to live. I am fine now.

Peetster 04-24-2003 04:30 PM

Oh, I'm fine with it. See:

BigJayz 04-24-2003 04:31 PM

::lights bowl and takes a big rip for Hal!::

Quadraton 04-24-2003 04:33 PM

Numbers! I need numbers!

I'll melt into oblivion if I don't have my numbers!! ;)

krwlz 04-24-2003 04:52 PM

i agree, i liked the numbers man! kinda gave you an idea of who commits time, and who is on occaisionaly

ARTelevision 04-24-2003 04:58 PM

yes they are stored. not highly visible.
let's emphasize post quality.

krwlz 04-24-2003 05:01 PM

qualtiy is always first but i still like to compare....i mean when you looked at lebell or you art, or boco, and saw the post count, you were like holy shit, thats insane, then (for me anyway) that gave their opinions more weight...

maybe its better this way, i dont kno, but i am not to fond of change...

Johnny Rotten 04-24-2003 05:04 PM

Waaah! My avatar! Want back!

;)

ARTelevision 04-24-2003 05:07 PM

your counts are still being incremented and your avatars will arrive when they are due.

KillerYoda 04-24-2003 05:11 PM

There's a big gap where the number used to be. Is anything gonna be put in the post number's place?

The_Dude 04-24-2003 05:22 PM

didnt notice that. cool

Lebell 04-24-2003 05:27 PM

Good riddence as far as I'm concerned.

KWSN 04-24-2003 05:54 PM

I am DAMN GLAD... we can now judge people on how cool their avatar is rather than how many posts they have. Schweet.

Doesn't this require that you have enough posts to have an avatar first????

Although I did use that post count to see who the "regulars" are (if i haven't come across too many posts from that is).

jets 04-24-2003 06:26 PM

I want an avatar :) Thanks Hal!!!

yodapaul 04-24-2003 06:37 PM

I think this is a good move, Thanks Halx.

I think that's the idea... this way the number of posts someone has won't give their ideas any more weight. Besides, you can get the general idea of how many posts someone has by looking at the title, just not the numerical amount.

I think it's a good move.

JadziaDax 04-24-2003 07:05 PM

the important thing is:

QUALITY not QUANTITY.

Please keep this in mind when you're posting.
Stay away from making comments like "LOL" or just a smiley.

And remember...

HAVE FUN :)

BubblegumTeflon 04-24-2003 07:07 PM

Well for the short time I've been here I only looked at my own number anyway. One extra click doesn't make a terrible difference so I don't mind at all.

I agree, the count doesn't give any more credibility to a posters words, it just means that they post often. It'll be nice to judge people based on what they say rather how much they say it. :)

So do I , now you can stop IM'ing me telling me how many more posts than me you have :)

JangoFett72 04-24-2003 09:06 PM

I agree and am kinda glad to see them go. I too was guilty of giving more to weight to posters with higher counts.

Sion 04-24-2003 10:03 PM

"your counts are still being incremented and your avatars will arrive when they are due."

ok, but what is the procedure? Having never had an avatar here, I dont know. Does a moderator PM me, or what?

also, just out of curiosity, whats the deal on the titles (rookie, crazy, etc)? what are the corresponding post numbers to each one? and at what point, if any, do I get to chose my own?

YzermanS19 04-24-2003 10:15 PM

Nice improvment..

Sion--you get them when you hit 250. Its just harder to figure out now. Not that much though. go to the main page, find your name in the alphabetical list of people online at the current time, click your name, and your post total shows up!

There you know where to go. It might be in User CP too somewhere.

Plummie 04-24-2003 10:46 PM

Click on "profile" under any of your posts and it will tell you how many posts you have. Simple as that.

When you hit 250, you are automatically given permission to upload an avatar; you don't have permission until then.

Plummie 04-24-2003 10:49 PM

Oh and I think it goes that if you accrue

50 posts = Tilted
100 posts = Crazy
250 = Avatar + Insane (or Psycho)
500 = Custom title choice

Am I right guys?

Then 500 = Junkie + Customizable title

I could have sworn there was a title inbetween Insane and Junkie.

guthmund 04-24-2003 11:09 PM

Good Idea, I think....

But if this is an idea to curb the amount of crap posts, do you really think it will work?

Won't folks just go crazy til they get their avatar and custom title anyway?

I don't put significant weight on number of posts anyway, so maybe I'm just not seeing the whole picture.

sbscout 04-25-2003 03:17 AM

good move, Hal. Thanks.

ratbastid 04-25-2003 04:19 AM

Amazing how just not showing post counts totally changes the game, isn't it? Suddenly I'm not concerned about getting my avatar, and I'm not scanning for post-count to find out what I ought to read.

Now I feel like what I post should be a contribution, not a rip-off for a number. I feel like I can get to know people for their names and who they are, and not "oh, here's a 200, and that guy's only 15..."

This was a WAY good move, Hal.

I'm sincerely happy to see reactions like yours. That's EXACTLY why this was done. Hopefully everyone can eventually come to understand this the way you do.

Cynthetiq 04-25-2003 05:30 AM

yeah... well then it's going to be like what happened to me on the v3.0 where all of a sudden I looked up and there's THOUSANDS of posts by me from like 300 other people. Not that it's a bad thing... well maybe when you realize just how much time you've realy spent here.

As far as the post count goes, it was a controversy for the moment because Halx and Zerocool both were WAY up there. Why waste bandwidth, typing, and thought on something so infinitely small at this point in time when theres really more to bring to the table right now, like good topics and well thought out responses and discussions.

no big deal...I'm sure it pisses the post whores off.

Troublebot 04-25-2003 06:49 AM

I fear change, but I'm willing to try.

If TFP has taught me anything, it's to have an open mind.

Cuball 04-25-2003 07:17 AM

i rather like to see the post count, but I'll survive :-)

MUSV 04-25-2003 07:18 AM

Hmmm, I did not notice the lack of posts counts. I guess that just proves the post counter's unimportance

Sticky 04-25-2003 11:33 AM

What happened to the number of posts indicator?

Here are some of the things that I think might have happened to the number of posts indicator under our mini-profiles.

- it got SARS
- Too many members making dumb posts just to get their post indicator to 69 and then not making any more posts .
- Year 2000 bug

What do you think?

laughter 04-25-2003 11:35 AM

I suggest that it reached the number that it had been trying to, and stopped.

rockogre 04-25-2003 11:41 AM

The post count line is dead, long live the post count line.

Sticky 04-25-2003 11:45 AM

Oops. Sorry, I just noticed that there was already a thread about this.

Nhanced1 04-25-2003 12:14 PM

Well, it was always a welcome way to track my time that I've spent here. However, from the first time I started here at the TFP, after reading the charter, I always wondered why there was a post count at all.

Jadz is right. I think this'll definitely help make posts better! Thanks, guys, for all your hard work, and thanks to the other members for your quality posts!

Mango 04-25-2003 12:43 PM

Will this lead to

...

less

...

padding?

SM70 EDIT: For the most part, yes. Not only that, it won't stop me from deleting posts by people who pad like I just did with yours ;) Granted, I know it was just a joke, so I'm not actually upset. Just making a point.

4thTimeLucky 04-25-2003 12:45 PM

hahahahaha

Edit> Damn, couldn't get in in time. :(
I'll get you next time Mango.

Frosstbyte 04-25-2003 03:14 PM

I'd rather have them back. I'm clearly the minority in this one, so I'll take a back seat. It was an easy thing to index, and it'd be nice to be able to at least see your own without having to check your profile.

Liquor Dealer 04-26-2003 08:03 AM

The post count only matters in that it is what determines what little perks you have on the board - Avatar etc. I don't know what other determning factor could be used to allot these little perks that now come based solely on post count but I do know that post count isn't the best. You can spend a great deal of time working on a single post. It doesn't matter if you are posting boobies or giving your solution to all of the world's problems. If the post is worth anything at all it took time - sometimes a great deal of time. When you have finished writing or accumalating pictures, edited it so you don't embarass yourself by plastering your ineptness right there for all the world to see, and then hit the magic submit button, it took time - for that time you received 1 post count. The jerk that opened it and left the reply "i'd hit it" got the exact same post count as you did. The next one that typed in "nice!" - He/she also got the same post count. Post quality and not quantity - it will all come with time.

OU812 04-28-2003 03:13 PM

I'll admit to being one of the posters that worked on numbers (mainly to keep from being booted!). Towards the latter part of the V 3.0 board I tried to concentrate on quality rather than quantity. This time around my posts are all about quality. I try to contribute something in each response. :)

Eviltree 04-28-2003 07:13 PM

not my numbers! AUGH!

dvorak 04-29-2003 08:08 AM

I'd rather have my DONOR back. Oh well, I guess this site is worth another $2.00...

I think Halx is working on getting the donor status back but it is low on the list of things that are needed right now.
*sidenote: This site is worth a whole lot more then two bucks but if thats all you have we appreciate it.*

G_Whiz 04-29-2003 10:21 AM

I do hope that Halx is going to be able to put up the donor tag again. I was prouder of that than I ever was of my post count.

My only concern with the post count is when I get my avatar back. That will come, so I only check my count every day or two. I don't get the chance to post 100 times a day, so it's not that big of a deal.
