Walkman radio getting no AM signal
The other day I found a Casset/AM/FM radio walkman in with some junk someone I know was throwing out, and they said I could have it.
It's in good condition, just had dust and pieces of crap all inside of it. I cleaned it out, and put some batteries in, and everything works perfectly, except that I can't get an AM signal on it. FM and the tape deck works, and nothings chipped or broken on both outside or inside, but no matter where I go AM stations won't come in, not even a slight static buzzing of one. Not sure if that means the antenna inside is broke or what. I can get AM stations fine with any other radios I have. Anyone have any ideas other then taking it to a shop to get it looked at? |
Have you checked the switch that toggles between AM and FM? That might be the culprit. It might not be making its AM connection.
Other than that, the only idea I have is that you are the first person with the foreknowledge that the demise of AM radio is being plotted by the evil robots of this world and your walkman is its first victim. |
It's actually a push button switch thing and it is switching, becuase the LCD screen thing goes to AM and gives me the AM channel list. It's one of those new fangled ones with digital tuning and what not. A Sony Sports AM/FM Casset Walkman, WM-FS473 is the model if that helps at all.
The robot idea is possible, never know what their up to... |
Is this it?
http://www.my.sony.com/images/tImages/WMFS473.JPG If it is then if you don't give it back then I will block your FM signal too. Seriously,it's not worth the money to get it fixed. They are so fiddly to muck around with. FM is good. |
My advice: find a tape you really really really really really like, and then...
listen to it. |
Yep, thats the one. :)
Yeah, they're never worth the price to fix, that's why I was hoping there would be a simple solution, or just some way to figure out why it wont come in. I just wanted AM so I could switch to news if I wanted without having to take a second radio with me for it. Not that big a deal, just kinda bugs me that I can't figure out why it's not working, hehe. Thanks for the replies, 8) |
Well for starters try opening it up and see if any of the wires have come loose. A little solder, flux and soldering iron will work wonders. Next double check that switch with a multimeter on ohms, it should read as an open when it is not in AM and should go to 0 when closed. Check all the connections to the switch and see that they are tight. someone could have dropped it and broken something inside.

Record all the AM radio you want on a real radio at home. Listen to the tape in your walkman. Although I guess that doesn't really work for news. Just avoid all other news sources so the news will be news to you when you finally hear it.
Yeah, that works... |
