Anyone who can speak more than one language....

For those of you who can speak more than one language fluently, what language do you dream in?

I can speake English and Japanese fluently. IIn my dreams it's mostly in Japanese. My wife says that sometime I talk in my sleep, and it's also in Japanese.

AL9045 08-26-2003 10:27 AM

You can dream in different languages?

Never knew that, although I always dream in English.

skysooner 08-26-2003 10:33 AM

It all depends on where I am at. I speak English (1st language) and Spanish. If I'm in Mexico and have been speaking Spanish for a couple of hours, I dream in Spanish. Mostly I dream in English.

Cynthetiq 08-26-2003 11:18 AM

ummm no. english all the time.

A. Rothschild 08-26-2003 11:18 AM

Danish is my primary language, eventhough I write mostly in English. I can also speak German... not good, but I can survive. :)

Jim Kata 08-26-2003 11:28 AM

I think that people probably dream in the same language that they think in. My parents think in Urdu (Pakistani) so they dream in Urdu. I think in english so I dream in english. Anybody have any thoughts (whether you think in english or not :D) that they have on this?

skippy 08-26-2003 11:36 AM

I dream in both laguages ... swedish and english.. sometimes in both at the same time. Especialy if the dream comes from my youth where we spoke both languages around the house on a regular basis

Nisses 08-26-2003 12:03 PM

I think people dream in the languages they learned as a kid. Skippy seems to validate that one. Since he learned both languages at the same time, he also learned how to express himself in them, and really "learned" to think at the same time. So it seems logical his thinking-proces would borrow the words he learned to construct a stream of consciousness.

And to make sure I don't contradict myself, I dream in dutch :)

theinfamous 08-26-2003 12:38 PM

i sometimes dream in an unknown language. hmmm...suppressed memories?

Locobot 08-26-2003 12:39 PM

If I'm speaking it a lot I'll dream in German. It's been a while since I have had a good German language dream though. It's funny I have a much bigger vocabulary in my dreams ;)

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-26-2003 01:06 PM

I only speak english, i would like to learn different languages but i'm just way too lazy.

lafemmefatale 08-26-2003 01:11 PM

I agree with you dream with what you think with.

As a child [this is in Canada though] I dreamed w/Chinese, as i lost some of my Chinese, it was and is now, predominantly English. Once in a while little bits of french would sneak on in after reading french or having an intensive french class, but that is rare.

ninety09 08-26-2003 02:34 PM

I don't have a clue what language I dream in :\

(I speak French and English)

The_Dude 08-26-2003 02:49 PM

english, but i've had dreams in malayalam

Easytiger 08-26-2003 05:12 PM

I speak English and Japanese fluently, so I dream in Japanese sometimes. I speak rudimentary French, German and Portuguese, and every now and then I dream in French, but not often, and they're dreams in which very little is said (conveniently).
The Japanese dreams are great! They always involve a giant monster and Tokyo...

forkies 08-26-2003 05:33 PM

I ususally dream in English with some Japanese thrown in if I am dreaming about particular people (Japanese professors, Japanese people whom I know, etc.). I often wondered how long it would take for this to happen, and it began about 1.5 yrs after starting to study Japanese.

IC3 08-26-2003 05:50 PM

Only English here...But would like to expierence dreaming in a different language

And maybe Closed captioning along the bottom so I know what I and everybody else is saying:hmm:

Jasmar 08-26-2003 06:05 PM

If i get mad in a dream i start to speak spanish

Great Scott 08-26-2003 08:47 PM

I will occasionally have dreams in Finnish the same way as if my attention starts to wander I will occasionally think in Finnish. Really slows down the action though.

mirevolver 08-26-2003 09:21 PM

I've had the occasional dream in German. Usually I wake up rather disturbed from those.

fuzzix 08-27-2003 06:54 AM

I've also had the occasional dream in German, and often right before a german exam ;)

FlorentinoAriza 08-27-2003 07:01 AM

sometimes i dream in english (native dutch speaker)
and even before i knew how to speak spanish i had a dream in spanish once when i was in ecuador for a few weeks. the dream was as confused as the days were.
my wife sometimes laughs out loud / giggle while she is sleep, quite funny

ironx 08-27-2003 07:15 AM

i don't think i converse in any language in my dreams, i mean, i know im saying something, but it just all seem to fit in place, no language barriars..i duno.

HighwayStar 08-27-2003 07:55 AM

I speak some decent Spanish thanks to my years in high school, but I'm not sure that I've ever had a dream in Spanish. I don't think so. Thats odd.

Jack Ruby 08-27-2003 01:10 PM

I live in Belgium so in school I get Dutch, French, German and English. I speak Dutch (my native language) and English well, French is so-so and my German is pretty awful.

nostalgic1 08-27-2003 02:23 PM

i speak english which is my native language.. then there's spanish, french, and some italian.

more fire 08-27-2003 04:18 PM

I always dream in english, even though cymraeg is my first language.

Amano 08-27-2003 11:33 PM

English (1st language), very basic understanding of Cantonese Chinese (from my parents), Spanish (haven't spoken much lately, but give me an hour and I can be near fluent), and Japanese (semi-fluent)

TheUnknownSaint 08-28-2003 01:02 AM

Danish as primary.. and english :)

I had german in school, but i suck at german ;)

Silvy 08-28-2003 01:07 AM

I speak 2 languages more or less fluently.

Depending on which one I use the most for some time, my dreams are in that language.

This effect is most striking when moving to a different country. If you learn the language and need it all day, one day you'll wake up with the odd realisation that you've dreamt in that language. That feels really weird, and the effect can take a few days to get used to.

stinkynutz 08-28-2003 05:47 AM

i speak english and russian

but i don't dream much and most of the time i don't remember what i dream about. i simply don't know.
but i do think in english a lot probably because i have to speak it more than russian.

KeyserSoze 08-28-2003 06:26 AM

I speak bullshit! Does that count??:D

raeanna74 08-28-2003 07:30 AM

English is my native language. I know a tiny bit of spanish and japanese. I know Sign Language very well but it's technically not considered a language because it varies a great deal from country to country and even regionally. My grandmother could speak French fluently and one time after listening to a conversation which she had a long conversation with a person who spoke French as well I had a dream in which I spoke French. In my dream I could speak it fluently and understood everything I was saying. Of course it was probably just nonsense if I could have recorded it and viewed it while awake. I think it must have a lot to do what your current experiences. I've never had a conversation in sign language while sleeping. It tends to tap into you motor skills more so I'm guessing that may be partly why.

Regziever 08-29-2003 09:35 AM

I know one languages aside from my native tongue (Swedish).
English (American english) go figure.. =)

archer2371 08-29-2003 10:05 AM

I heard about this phenomenon from my French Teacher, I told my friends if I ever started dreaming in French that they had full permission to kill my ass.

splck 08-29-2003 12:12 PM

My dreams all have nothing but porn music in them...no words required.

drewg 08-29-2003 01:25 PM

I speak Norwegian, my primary, language as well as English.

I can also make myself understood in German.

And by knowing and speaking Norwegian, I can also understand and make myself understood in the other nordic languages (Swedish, Danish and Icelandic)

CSflim 08-30-2003 03:42 PM

I speak English and Irish.
Talk about a pointless language! There are about a thousand people alive today that speak it exclusively.
I mean if you learn French you can go to France, if you learn German, you can go to Germany!
But Irish......?

Well, I guess it's kinda cool to have a language that is unique to our country, you know...culture and all that ballocks...

Either way, we don't get a choice about learning irish. Irish is a compulsory subject from the very start of your schooling, right up until you leave secondary school (high school).

I also studied French, but I majorly suck at it. Couldn't string a sentance together, despite having studied it for five years!
Bonnnnnjoer!

Oh yeah, and I have dreamnt in Irish, while staying in a Gaeltacht, which are areas of the country which have Irish as the primary language...very rare...and very isolated! However, they are often used for students studing Irish to go on an "Irish Summer Camp", to help learn the language.

Xell101 08-30-2003 05:16 PM

I speak english, german, and japanese, but no one ever speaks in my dreams, its all facial expressions and mental feelings as to what they intend to convey to me, like we communicate telephatically and just dump the words.

forseti-6 08-30-2003 06:12 PM

I'm fluent in Spanish and a couple Chinese dialects, but I don't think I've ever drempt in anything other than English.
