Woman sentenced for hurting baby

WETUMPKA -- In a surprise move Thursday afternoon, Melissa Wright, the Coosada woman charged with attempted murder for placing her infant daughter in a hot oven, pleaded guilty in Elmore County Circuit Court.

Circuit Judge Sibley Reynolds sentenced Wright, 27, 100 Harm's Way, Lot 10, to 25 years in prison.

Wright placed her 18-month-old daughter in the oven in June 2002, with the setting on broil. The child received third-degree burns over 70 percent of her body.

"The child has made a remarkable recovery, considering the injury she sustained," said District Attorney Randall Houston. "She is in the care of other family members and still faces years of reconstructive surgery. I am satisfied with this lengthy prison sentence. It is unthinkable that a person could do something like this to a defenseless child. I feel a 25-year sentence fits the crime in this case."

Wright, who was in court Thursday on a change of venue motion when she entered the plea, originally told investigators the child fell into the oven by accident. She told lawmen she was holding the baby when she opened the oven to check on liver that was cooking. She told authorities the child slipped from her arms, fell on the door, rolled into the oven and the door closed.

The anguished cries of the child brought her father from outside, where he got her out of the oven and rushed her to the hospital.

When news of the case broke, it garnered national media attention. The quiet community of Coosada had to come to grips with one of its own accused of such an act.

"How in the world could a mother do that to her child?" said Christie Fuller of Coosada, who has two children. "I hope she was temporarily insane or something like that. I can't accept a sane person could do something like this."

"This was not an accident. This was attempted murder," Houston said. "We were going to argue, and we feel the evidence would show, Wright was jealous of the attention the father was placing on the child. She didn't suffer from any mental illness. She is just mean as hell."

And can anyone give me a good reason why we don't need to get a license to have kids? We need one for everything else. There are far too many stories out there like this.

A 25 year sentence is not enough. She ruined her childs life.. Unfuckingbelievable.....

Cynthetiq 08-24-2003 05:54 AM

i remember hearing about this as an urban legend when i was a kid.... but each legend has something that is a small thread of truth.

JBX 08-24-2003 06:01 AM

Thanks sixate, my morning is screwed. Back to thinking the human race is unsalvageable. I'm for slowly roasting the bitch and feeding her to hungry hyenas.

Hash_Browns 08-24-2003 07:56 AM

OMG...I am totally grossed out by this :( :( :( :( :(

This is a case where if she ends up dead in prison, I will be satisfied completely....25 years my ass...grrr!!

asshopo 08-24-2003 07:56 AM

This is where "eye for an eye" punishment should be allowed. Put this retarded ass biotch in the oven and let her get the same punnishment that she dished out. THEN toss her ass in jail for the rest of her life.

25 years, IMO, is just a slap on the wrist.

I couldn't imagine even thinking about something like this with my kids much less being screwed the head enough to do it.

Unbelievable.

Memalvada 08-24-2003 08:05 AM

What a sick woman!!! How could someone do this to their own child?!?!?!?!

Tiger69z 08-24-2003 08:06 AM

The Website looks legit...

to know this is true is pretty damn sick

JumpinJesus 08-24-2003 08:33 AM

25 years? Her intent was to murder. Just because the father was able to save the baby doesn't take away from what she did. I say a lifetime sentence with forced "volunteer" work at a burn center cleaning bedpans with her tongue in between severe beatings.

Baldrick 08-24-2003 08:38 AM

Yup, I heard this on the news a couple nights ago, and it made me sick to my stomach. I couldn't even begin to think of a sentence that makes sense. The death penalty is too good for her...

Macheath 08-24-2003 09:28 AM

Yeah, this is just awful; but I can't help thinking about all of those amusing urban legends with LSD tripping babysitters - or that Simpson's episode with Chief Wiggum's mock-up of a "hippie pot party".

All thing's considered; microwaves scare me more - being cooked 'from the inside' gives me the heebie-jeebies.

Ashton 08-24-2003 02:12 PM

The kid shouldn't have nibbled on her gingerbread house.......

/going straight to hell

krwlz 08-24-2003 02:13 PM

Two words....Hang her.

I can't believe someone could be that cruel.

MacGnG 08-24-2003 02:22 PM

after a story like this they sure need to have licenses for parents. this just makes no fuckin sense!

there is no way that could possibly have been an accident, that lady need some serious help.

Bill O'Rights 08-25-2003 04:12 AM

Anybody else catch that address. 100 Harm's Way, Lot 10. "Harm's Way"?

onetime2 08-25-2003 05:00 AM

While in college I had a History professor who announced at the last class that he would be leaving teaching. He said he wanted to relay a story to all of us that would give us some perspective as we go into the "real" world and to make us think about the people we have around us in our classes.

He told us how he worked in his spare time for a drug outreach program (I believe he confided that he had once been an addict himself or at least someone very close to him was). He talked about his interest in history and how many of the atrocities he read about and spoke to survivors about just weren't "real" to him. I mean he knew they happened and understood the implications of them but the level of evil necessary for them to occur he could never tap into or understand. An event in his personal life gave him a glimpse into this type of horror.

He then told how there was one woman who he was helping through the group he worked with. He detailed her struggles with her husband/boyfriends, jobs, the police, medical problems, etc which were all wrapped into her addiction. He told of how, when she found out she was pregnant, she changed her life. How she quit drugs, got a steady job, started going to school to get a better job, got rid of her addict friends/lovers. She had been doing really well. Her child was born and, amazingly, had none of the medical problems typically associated with mothers who use drugs regularly.

Then, one day, he realized he hadn't heard from her in a while. Something bugged him about it. So, he went over to her house. As he climbed the stairs in her apartment building, he smelled this terrible stench. As he got closer to her floor, the smell got worse. He neared the stairwell door and heard horrible screaming.

He was visibly shaken as he was relaying this story. A man who showed complete control in the classroom, was always cheerful, and incredibly well spoken was struggling to find the words to convey his message.

He said the screaming still rings in his ears when he thinks about it (and sometimes when he doesn't). He broke through the woman's door to find her in her kitchen with the baby in a frying pan over the stove. He threw the woman out of the way and pulled the baby from the pan.

This was many years ago he said. The mother had slipped back into drugs around the time that crack was becoming the drug of choice in inner city neighborhoods. She was quickly out of control on crack even though she had been relatively functional during her years using other drugs. She said the baby was crying and she had to make it stop. Somehow she associated frying it with making it stop.

The professor then said this baby is now 18 (this was around 1990 or '91) and will be entering college. She has terrible scars over the lower half of her body but she is an excellent athlete, student, and person. Going forward, he said, all of you should not take the people you meet for granted. There is an incredible breadth of experience in the people you see everyday. Some are truly amazing people who have overcome immense tragedy. You will never know, just by looking around the classroom, if you are lucky enough to know this girl or others like her. She may be sitting next to you when you come back next year.

With that he thanked us for listening and left the room. A few months later I read a tribute to this man in a local paper. It seems he had been diagnosed with cancer that semester and it had already spread throughout his body. We were among the last classes he ever taught. He chose to spend some of his last days on earth with us instilling a bit of knowledge and hopefully an appreciation for life.

onetime2: It's people like your prof that keep this world from blowing up.

quadro2000 08-25-2003 05:37 AM

What a horrible story. Like Keanu Reeves said in Parenthood, "You need a license to buy a dog, drive a car...catch a fish. But they'll let any butt-reaming asshole be a father." Or mother, as this case may be.

What JBX said, only make sure she's still alive when they start feeding.

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-25-2003 02:25 PM

Wow, that is crazy and she only gets 25 years? That bitch needs a lot longer than.

I agree with this statement 100%

stories like this are horrible

this reminds me of the few babies in the last month that have died trapped inside of cars when neglecting parents leave them in there :[

mml 08-25-2003 04:12 PM

I can't say that I believe in "an eye for an eye" punishment, but let's be real, this lady (and I obviously use this term loosly) deserves much more than 25 years.

This morning I read a story about a couple who keep their two 5 year olds in cages, which follows on the footsteps of a couple who was keeping one of their kids in a closet. Now I hear this and it just makes me sick. What the hell is wrong with these people?

DEI37 08-25-2003 05:42 PM

People need to die. This country, and the people in it are getting more and more fucked up every day. This sickens me...I have a three year old daughter...and it pains me to think of her getting hurt...in ANY way. I've never hurt her...never will. Even on accident, it's only been a time or two, and at that, not very bad. Please send this bitch to my house. I'll lock her in the oven for 4-5 hours at 325*, and then let some dogs loose on her.

DEI37 08-25-2003 05:43 PM

And, by the way, I don't believe in "an eye for an eye." I want TWO!!!

StormBerlin 08-25-2003 09:24 PM

What a sick and horrible thing to happen to an innocent being. She'll get hers, I have no doubt about that.

Snoogans 08-26-2003 01:59 AM

The fact that these kinds of people are allowed to have kids is fucking sickening.

25 years is a fuckin joke.

ssander9 08-26-2003 03:14 AM

This is truly disgusting. Not only did the child get hurt badly, but the legal system sucks, too. She would have gotten more time for possession of an illegal substance with intent to sell. Twenty-five years....she will be out in 15 years with good behavior. Maybe then she will move to 101 Get your A** Kicked Lane.

I dunno; I can kind of see her being stabbed to death in the prison laundry within a year or two - Convicts are mothers too.

vermin 08-26-2003 04:23 PM

WOODCHIPPERS!! They're not just for child molesters anymore.

merkerguitars 08-26-2003 07:49 PM

Just when you thought people couldn't get more fucking weird....

fuzzix 08-27-2003 06:57 AM

freakin hell :/

water_boy1999 08-28-2003 08:59 AM

Our country is run by a bunch of pussies. We put so much into our legal system, humanity, and being a peaceful society that we somehow think 25 years for this atrocity is an acceptable punishment. I tell you, if the powers that be pulled their heads out of their asses and realized that "punishment should fit the crime", we would have a lot less of these incidents in the world. Yes, I believe in peace, I believe in humanity, I believe that people are inherently good, but I also feel there is no place in this world for the types of heinous crimes people commit nowadays. These crimes should have stiffer consequences for the sake of humanity.
