Hmm... you keep blaming Ohio. Isn't that a state in your country?

And... what if the screw-up on that power company just moved in from New york?

But then, not knowing enough about US, maybe the idea of a New Yorker moving to Ohio is just stupid. Sorry. ;)

The solution is very simple.

Build more power generation plants.

The problem is that that takes shit loads of money and no one wants to belly up for that one. I read not too long ago that Ontario at one time had its own plans to build a mega hydro facility at James Bay like Quebec did only it got sqashed in the environmental assessment phase and some IDIOT decided to build nukes. Well now the nukes are shut down half the time and falling apart and we still get most of our power from conventional sources like Niagara Falls.

It was interesting to note that Hydro Quebec had NO PROBLEM coping. They have tons of capacity. Why?? Cause they are smart and built a huge installation with future growth in mind.

It's time ontario hydro woke up and started thinking James Bay. We could generate enough clean hydro power there to feed half of north America.

Of course, you would have to flood a million acres. Details details.

I think the problem was lack of communication, not lack of power generators. The power companies in Ohio didn't tell anybody anything. They were assholes. They had bad credit and were likely afraid of bad publicity. Now they've got all the bad publicity they could want.

Quebec probably is more isolated from anybody else and is so power-rich and with newer technology, they are a model for the rest of us. They are a little paranoid and don't rely so much on communication from the "english", so they cut themselves off from the rest of North America in a heartbeat and that saved them.

Quebec was quick enough to exploit James Bay first. It may be too late for Ontario. The natives and wildlife have already been displaced and the environment has suffered enough.

Ontario should should buy power from Quebec and scrap their antiquated equipment. The nuclear power plants in Ontario remind me of "The Simpsons". Only with hundreds of Homers.

Newer, automated equipment would've kept the power blackout from speading past Ohio.

The power grid must be regulated. As it is now, its a disaster. The companies have no incentives to build power plants or transmission lines. They are trying to make as much profit they can.

I heard in a report that a power plant in Valley Forge, Penn. prevented the blackout from spreading to the south. They were doing their jobs unlike the power company in Ohio.

Glad

I don't believe for a second that the blackout was an accident.

My feelings are even stronger now that the UK had it happen also (although not for nearly as long).

Can you say T E R R O R I S M......

But later on the radio, was a report from Niagara saying (warning: paraphrase ahead) ,
"Lightning, my ass. It was a clear blue sky today. And, oh by the way, we still have power."
That's when I started singing the South Park song, "Blame Canada!"

Of course they still have power. Niagra has huge backup gens that can power that entire area just incase something like that DOES happen. As well, there was a huge storm I dont know why they would deny that. Probably not the cause, but still just dumb.

playing the blame game is a waste of time, fix the problem!

Obviously American politicians love to point their finger at Canada and say, "They did it." There are a couple reasons for this:

1) It's a different country so none of the American politicians could possibly be held accountable for the problem/mistake.

2) There is no way, at least at first, for the general public to know any different.

Bling bling...give the man a carrot. North America has enough generation, the problem is we send it North-South rather than East-West for the most part.
It's amazing how much havoc this caused. I don't know how 13 hours without power could thaw freezers...do people keep the door closed?

well you do need to open it in order to get the food out

No shit sherlock:hmm:
I still have a hard time believing people had to throw out the contents of their refridgerator after a 13 hour power loss. I lived for many years in a tropical country that had between 5 and 10 hours of no power every day and we still had frozen food and cold milk.
