I think it's fine for resume padding and the like, which is the only place I've even seen a membership "used". As much as MENSA is derided here, most people don't and won't qualify, and it's one way to identify a strength when you need to sell yourself.

I had grades high and low in college, but I had high aptitude, so I use measures of aptitude as selling points. Everyone likes to put their best foot forward, and it would be foolish not to use the advantage in your career if you can do it without boasting.

Quoted for truth.

Mensa carries different weight with different people, but overall it is a way to signify that one is capable in the area of thinking. It is not dissimilar to good grades in school or measures of success at a job: it is a mark by which you can be compared. Part of the reason I joined was that I needed a job really badly coming out of college, and I had a feeling that adding Mensa to my resume could help. I got the job over people who were more qualified and experienced. I also attend meetings infrequently with my wife. Mensa *can* be a decent social club if you can find the right group of people.
