Young Activist Changes Name to GoVeg.com
Thu Jul 31, 2:42 AM ET

By MARTHA IRVINE, AP National Writer

She knew her new name might finally stick when she got a phone message recently: "Hi, GoVeg.com. This is your mother. Please call me."

It might sound more than a little odd — but it's true. A young animal rights activist from Indiana once known as Karin Robertson has legally changed her name to that of a Web site run by her employer, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

It's not a first name or a last name — just one name. And don't call her "Veg" or "Dot," as some have tried to do.

"I like the whole name together," says the 23-year-old recent college graduate, who is now a youth educator for PETA and living in Norfolk, Va., where the organization is based.

The point, she says, isn't necessarily to promote PETA, where her bosses were as surprised as anyone when she came to them with the idea this past spring.

She says she made the switch to get people talking about vegetarianism and animal rights wherever she pulls out her new driver's license — at the airport, the bank or anyplace else.

"People are really perplexed," she says. "They say, 'You've got to be joking.'"

They usually laugh — and so does she.

"Every time I go to the bank, the tellers will report back about vegetarian food they've tried," she says, gleefully.

Her decision to take on such an unusual name also offers a chance to talk about the treatment of animals on farms and in processing plants — a source of heated debate.

The conditions under which chickens are raised and slaughtered was, for example, the topic of much discussion at the International Poultry Exposition in Atlanta earlier this year.

Agriculture experts there said animal rights activists are simply choosing sentimentality over science and practicality.

Now those in the agriculture field are rolling their eyes over GoVeg.com's name change.

"It sounds like she needs to get a life," says Kara Flynn, a spokeswoman for the National Pork Producers Council, a lobbying group in Washington. "If she actually went on a farm and saw what was happening there, she might be pleasantly surprised."

The activist formerly known as Karin Robertson seems undaunted by the criticism — and that's not unusual, says her mother, Melanie Robertson, of Culver, Ind.

She says her daughter first became concerned about conditions of animals on farms after doing a science project for school. While still in high school, her daughter then joined an animal rights group on the campus of nearby Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.

Admittedly, her mother says, the name change has been difficult to get used to.

"My first comment was 'But your real name is so pretty. Why would you want to do that?'" says Melanie Robertson, a kindergarten teacher who named her daughter for a college friend.

GoVeg.com's father, Bob, regularly eats vegetarian food, too, since having triple bypass surgery two years ago. But when it comes to his youngest daughter's name change, the fisheries biologist, who counts many hunters among his friends, is taking his share of ribbing.

Still, the family — most of whom GoVeg.com says aren't vegetarians "yet" — is standing behind her.

"To us, she will always be Karin," her mother says. "But I think she has a good reason for doing what she's doing."

It's unbelieveable the zombies that work for PETA. Living in Hampton Roads, where their world HQ building is, completely sucks because you can't go anywhere without seeing their signs, pamphlets, or protesters. If YOU see a PETA zombie in your town doing something, it's 10 TIMES worse here in Norfolk/VA Beach.

In downtown Norfolk, the battleship USS Wisconsin is permanently moored as a museum across the river from their building. I wish I could get a SEAL team to climb aboard under cover of darkness, load up those 16 inch guns and fire a fucking broadside right into their building.

And is it GoVejj or Go Vegg? If I ever meat her, I'll simply call her GoFuckYouself.com.

Perhaps if she ate some meat, the protein would feed a few braincells so that she could see how ridiculous and stupid she really is.

SiN 08-01-2003 05:26 AM

bleh.

i hope freaks like this chick don't give normal, harmless, non-PETA supporting, non-fanatical vegetarians like myself a bad name.

whatever.

hopefully all you TFPers are a bit smarter than that.

:)

Gotta respect a person for being dedicated to one's beliefs, but this is a little much.

The publicity these people get is quite amazing.

I'm sure that's what this is - a publicity stunt.
Perhaps if some of these folks got laid once in a while...

Okay, I will be the first to cheer for another animal rights activist doing something to make a difference even if it is in her own family and town.

You give her a hard time but you know what? She is an American and what she did is what we do.

Yes PETA can be a bit over the top but without them no one would get things changed as far as cruelty to animals goes. If you could see how some of these animals are treated you may think twice about knocking her. Chickens with their beaks cut off while they are still alive so they don't peck each other (because of the tight spaces they pack them all in together). Then dropped in boiling water to remove the feathers, while still alive. Trust me it is pretty nasty.

Sometimes you got to be a bit extreme to get things done. As long as they are not hurting anyone or breaking any laws they are fine in my book.

Halx 08-01-2003 11:30 AM

Ok, which one of you wants to change your name to tfproject.org ?

World's King 08-01-2003 11:31 AM

Bomb PETA

Phaenx 08-01-2003 11:40 AM

You know, PETA would be useful if they weren't completely crazy wackjobs. They're like a hate group right now, they hate everything that's not an animal, or a member of peta.

You're right..she is an American and she has the right to do this and to speak her mind. I have seen how animals are treated. My uncle has chicken houses and yes I worked with him.. did it alarm or shock me? No.. they did what they had to do to produce the quota for the contract. Did some of it seem over the top.. at times maybe..but you know I still eat chicken and I love it. I also have friends that raise cattle.. I've worked with them also. They love those animals but they take what they need to take to the slaughter houses..and yes I've been in the houses and seen what happens.. it's a little disgusting but I don't think it's unpractical or unethical. I think that Peta is WAY overboard. I can understand making sure that animals and pets are treated right but when it's poultry for food.. does it really matter in the end?

JohnS72 08-01-2003 08:39 PM

I want to name my son "Napster" Just because hey, it's a pretty retro name, isn't it?

Soggybagel 08-01-2003 11:32 PM

As far as being american and all the great stuff...yeah she has a right to do it...overall though pardon my french but what she is doing is hilariously bullshit stuff. I have no problem with vegans and any other non meat eater...not that this is really related but I despise PETA...in essence they should be pretty good...but there guerilla like tactics piss me off. For example a few years ago this guy I knew from school his uncle owned a Mink farm and they kill them to make mink jackets etc. Well PETA people thought it would be a good idea to break in a building and release over a few hundred mink in the wild. Too bad they had been cage fed all there life and soon died in the wild due to no nature outdoor skills. Well this almost put the man into bankruptcy ruining his lively hood. Also what is this ANTI Milk Crap. My grandparents run a farm and the last time i checked there was no cattle abuse nor did milk make me sick.
