Internet slow down

I'm sure some of you have seen that story that only 42% of Americans are online, much less than when it "boomed." However, I have noticed lately that a lot of the sites I visit are constantly down or encredibly slow, and it seems like nothing is being done about it (FTP excluded, of course), as if the server admins just don't care.

Anyone else noticing this? Maybe it's just me...

i've not noticed a big change really. I have DSL so everything loads pretty fast.

That's a sort of nasty generalization. I promise you, if one of my clients' sites was running slow, I'd hear about it within minutes, either from my automated uptime-monitoring tools, or from the clients themselves.

It's not like there's some cadre of Server Admins out there who have decided not to care.

More than likely there's a routing problem somewhere between your ISP and a major backbone. If a large swath of sites appear slow to you, it could be something to take up with your own service provider.

Well I access the net from different places on different machines, both high speed (campus connection - Dual DS3s, home connection - cable), so I can tell when sites slow down and it's not just the ISP or computer.

And I know there are thousands of sites out there with constantly great speed and uptime, but I find an increasing number more that aren't..

I don't think it's too bad out there. No more so than usual. Some sites move, some sites crawl. Either way, it's all gonna work out as soon as they intall that chip in my head. Then I won't even need a monitor!

The internet might not be the culprit. Maybe the sites you are visiting bought new routers or reconfigured the systems thereby causing a slow down in the data transfer. Maybe one of the backbones was down for maintenance. Could be any number of things. Maybe your ISP was having node troubles.

I always check the Internet Traffic Report when I think something may be up.

there have been inordinate numbers of netbios attacks and ddos attacks - these are increasing because the number of viruses/trojans that spawn them increases as the spam in your inbox increases, etc etc - obviously.

you can track this sort of thing at:

http://isc.incidents.org/

and other similar sites.
