jury duty?

I have to be at the courthouse at 8:45 AM on Friday. Actually they want me to call Thursday night to make sure it's still on.

Anybody done jury duty? Do I have to dress up? I dress like a freakin' stoner. I work nights. What happens if I fall asleep? Will they give me smoke breaks?

Tandem 07-29-2003 09:34 PM

lol - good luck to you.

If you're lucky, you could be removed from the Jury in pre-selection. You never know.

What's the case ??

laxative 07-29-2003 09:47 PM

beats the hell outta me.

numberfive 07-29-2003 09:51 PM

Dressing up is recommended. If you fall asleep chances are the person next to you will wake you up. It'll be long and boring even if you don't get selected, so be ready.

If you REALLY want to get out of jury service, I'd suggest turning up in a VERY conservative suit, short, trimed hair, polished shoes, Republican Party lapel pin, & if you can wear a pair of rimless "Heinrich Himmler" glasses then so much the better.

The object of this is to convince the defense that you're the sort of potential juror who views the trial as a sort of meaningless prelude to finding his client guilty & then hanging him.

Mike.

hotzot 07-29-2003 09:58 PM

LMAO!!! sorry miked10270 thats a shoo in here in NH!

YourNeverThere 07-29-2003 10:13 PM

oh goodness mike thats great, it all depends on if you want to do it or not, if you want to i suggest complete cosmetic surgery untill you look excatly like Heinrich Himmler, and if you dont want to come stoned and set yourself on fire everytime someone says your name, thats what i would do anyway

laxative 07-29-2003 10:21 PM

not totally against it. I have a feeling looking like a stoner and setting myself on fire would make me a shoe-in here.

What's the penalty for not showing up?

hotzot 07-29-2003 11:15 PM

jail

YourNeverThere 07-29-2003 11:18 PM

the penalty for not showing is getting set on fire...

Stare At The Sun 07-29-2003 11:18 PM

i dunno, you could have fun with it, answer all the questions right, but make a total ass of yourself in the courtroom....like "fall asleep" in your chair, and then throw yourself foward, kick over your chair, and then spring up real fast and try and sit down all casual like...or, bring an electronic fart machine, and have fun with that...*laughs* or just cough A LOT. or dont wear any deoderant, but that would only affect the poor jury...or bring a pen, one you have to click to write with, and click that a lot...just be the biggest ass ever...unless you can get in major trouble for that(contempt of court) but i'd press it to the limit regardless...:D

Mael 07-29-2003 11:19 PM

penalty for not showing up would most likely be contempt of court which would be a fine and possibly a night in jail. dress in at least khaki's and a polo style shirt, any more casual could land you in contempt of court as well.

i've been summoned twice. i have not made it to jury selection though. they'll sit you in a big room with lots of people and assign you a number. if your number is called, you and the group you're called with will be brought to jury selection where you will then be asked questions, and you will either be selected for that case or you will go back to the big room and wait to be called to possibly sit on another case. at least that's how it works out where i live. you're there for the day whether you like it or not, you're not going to get dismissed from it, so just suck it up and try to enjoy the ride.

Mael 07-29-2003 11:21 PM

oh, i read an article recently that a judge called a mistrial because a juror fell asleep. not sure what happened to the juror though.

dy156 07-30-2003 08:51 AM

If you seriously do not want to be on the jury, once you are called into the room, you will undoubtedly be told a little about the trial and asked questions about your feelings on various things, such as, "is there anyone here who could not set aside their personal convictions and ---sentence this man to just probation/death/award the plaintiff 18 million----. Answer the questions, and focus on your strong feelings about some matter. They will try to get you to agree that you could follow the instructions the judge gives you about setting aside your personal feelings, but if you do not agree, you will be struck "for cause" and hopefully get to leave early.

tenchi069 07-30-2003 09:16 AM

dress is how you want. some people view it as formal as church, others view is as formal as a civic or pta meeting. as far as dress goes, as long as you dont dress flamboyant for the sake of drawing attention, unless you normally dress like dennis rodman, then no problems. if the judge is offended by your dress, or if he/she thinks it is only to get attention, you will be "asked" to wear something more "desirable" next time. i was dismissed from jury duty when i told them i was moving out of the county within 3 months time. I really was, and i don't suggest lying.

Nisses 07-30-2003 12:41 PM

actually, what dy says is the best and safest way to do it.

Also, make it widely known that you can spot whether someone's innocent or not by just looking at them. Since they have that "look" about them. You know, that evil "I am scum" look.

bobw 07-30-2003 01:33 PM

Doesnt sound like you have any chance of being selected anyway...

thebigk 07-30-2003 06:39 PM

I was called to jury duty once...I phoned them up on the day I was supposed to be there and told them I was sick...did this for a couple of days and then stopped calling...never heard anything from them afterwards!

more fire 07-30-2003 07:01 PM

don't go. no-one will care.

cliv 08-01-2003 08:06 PM

I know someone who forgot to go. He received a call from the court clerk --- "...come over right now or the county sheriff will be over to pick you up."
