Sometimes I wish...

...that I didn't have to be polite on the TFP because some people really deserve a good asshole-ripping.

Hrumph.

Actually, I have this problem in real life, too. I meet an idiot and my blood pressure goes up and I have all of these choice words that if I use will make me very unpopular with said idiots and the parents of small children.

Is it better to be repressed but civil, or expressed and mean?

It depends on the situation. On here, civil is always best because an asshole will always end up getting into trouble on their own. In real life, if the person doesn't stop, then and only then is it okay. I tend to be civil, but when pushed enough, I'm not fun to be around.

I worship at the altar of Miss Manners, who believes that courtesy and assertiveness may walk arm in arm. I can't say I've gotten there, but I'm working on it.

Agreed, spectre...civil's the best thing to be, but depending on the circumstances, you might need to open up a verbal can of whoop-ass.

Dearest Lurkette -

I feel you are mistaken.

Please take a look an at asshole ripping which I recently perpetuated.

http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=18172

I tried to do so in a civil manner, yet pulled no punches. The result? I think the target of my ripping got the point. So fire one off! Just be fair. Be reasonable. Be brutal.

* Please note that this post is in no way intended to call The_Dude an “asshole,” because he isn’t.

Point taken. I know you don't have to be rude to point out when someone's out of line, but sometimes it's just too hard to be nice. It's easy when it's The_Dude Not so easy other times. No names.

I get so pissed off at people like that sometimes too, but I always remain civil, because I think that sometimes in public, other people won't notice what the asshole is doing, but when you rip into the asshole, people notice, henceforth making you the asshole.

Hello there,

I use the ignore list.
I know, there is no ripping involved but there is something pleasing about making it so their opinions do not exist. Cool, refreshing silence where there once was just noise.
I wonder if anyone ignores me?

I just hope that if people have an issue with something I say, they feel free to pm me if they don't want to air it in public.

Well if they are TRUE idiots (people who use CAPS LOCK for example), you should be able to tell them off without them really knowing, but all the smart people around will be all "booya", and you will go on to greater things (which may or may not involve cheese).

I always try to be courteous and polite, I have never found much use for enemies, either online or off. Although, there is a point when enough is enough.

yep, i generally try to be courteous, polite and empathetic, however if the outburst is somewaht justifiably it is then ok. It depends on your nature, i am more of a pacifist and mediator, but i think its is important that everyone does release anger/frustration in some capacity otherwise it is self destructive. Again, music and sport for me is a good outlet for releasing these emotions and i feel a lot better for it.

Just remember, don't go looking for a fight yourself

btw i hope i am not one of the assholes you were getting angry about

do what you can when you can and learn how to do it quietly. PM then if you wish to clear it up in a civil way. Or post a reply that defiantly shows your dislike of their ideals without being a bitch yourself. It’s difficult. I love this place because despite that there are indeed some assholes on here, if they slip up they get banned.

So if I were you, I’d either go straight in and PM em or I’d learn to agree to disagree or work in the shadows.

I try hard to be polite and I fail. A lot. The thing is, you have to remember that wires and words are major easy to cross.

But the moment you say ‘STFU, you idiot!’ yer gone and they win. It’s simply a stupid idea.

Learn some tac annnd there’s the difficult, difficult, difficult thing I do sometimes. I learn to tolerate.

I would also say repressed and civil in real life...then when you get that crap pent up inside you, you have to let it out in your own way, whether it be playing paintball, or screaming at idiots on irc, or blowing someone's head off in battlefield 1942. But in real life I wish more people were just polite even when they didn't want to be.
