Levels of Porn?

I did a search in this forum to see if this topic had been brought up already.. and I don't think it has.

In another thread someone said how they get bored with porn and don't look at it as much for a while. They thought other people may get bored with (I guess "normal") porn and go onto another "level" of violent/abusive stuff. This got me thinking. Do you see porn in levels? I know there's softcore porn and hardcore porn, but I mean besides that. Do you see something with toys as being on a higher or lower level than normal penetration? Is violent/abusive (Bondage is what I'm thinking of that as) on a different "level" to say, a threesome?

The way I see it, porn has the hardcore and softcore levels, and everything is in one of those two levels. Bondage vs. Toys vs. "normal" stuff is just different types, not on different levels. What other views/opinions are out there?

Oh, where I read the original bit was at: http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthr...threadid=17823

johnnymysto 07-24-2003 04:51 AM

Maybe I should clarify my original thought. Ted bundy said that he started out by looking at porn. He ended up killing people. Now, I'm certainly not saying that all people will wind up like Ted Bundy. Please don't think that. I'm just saying that after seeing softcore for a while, you move on to hardcore. After that, maybe you move on to bondage. After that, maybe you move on to scat, or snuff. So that's what I meant by another "level". At first, it's just T&A. Afterwards, it can branch to include LOTS of other things. See?

Latch 07-24-2003 05:03 AM

I understand what you meant. It just got me thinking. I see bondage and hardcore on the same level (for example). Just seeing what others thought. I don't mean any offense to you or anything.

johnnymysto 07-24-2003 05:04 AM

right on, brotha, right on

denim 07-24-2003 05:13 AM

Sure, it's like most anything: you get bored with the "same ol' same ol'" after a while and look for something more intense.

burntmonkey 07-24-2003 06:00 AM

I agree, johnnymysto. You may laugh, but I remember that when I was a kid, the Sear catalog was my lust igniter. After that, I moved on to Victoria's Secret, soft porn, and then the harder stuff.

I hate it. I wish that I had never looked at porn at all. It is so easy to get on the Internet that it seems even harder to avoid it. When it was only available in magazines, at least you had to go out of your way to get it and faced possible embarrassment. Now, you can get it instantly and fairly anonymously.

manalone 07-24-2003 06:08 AM

I would like to say that bondage and s/m is not the same as the "abusive and violent".

Safe Sane Consensual as the watchwords of BDSM

Jim Kata 07-24-2003 06:35 AM

There is nothing wrong with watching porn, unless its softcore.

ARTelevision 07-24-2003 06:49 AM

Figurative are is a subset of art.
Erotic art is a subset of figurative art.
Pornography is a subset of erotic art.

These follow traditional principles of categorization.
I suppose you could continue the exercise ad infinitum.

rev_skarekroe 07-24-2003 08:42 AM

Ted Bundy said lots of stuff.
Maybe he did look at porn, but killing people because he was addicted to harder and harder smut? Nonsense.

I agree with burntmonkey. When I was a kid, a scantly clad boobie was enough for me... but then as I saw more and more of that, it became less exciting. Over many, many years, I definately find myself seeking the harder material. I think though, its not so much the 'hardness' I'm seeking. Just a difference. I get tired of seeing softcore, so I look at something more hardcore... I get tired of hardcore, so I look at prego lesbians anal fisting. (just kidding). But you see, its not so much stepping up the level, its just finding new and exciting genres.

For me though, I've never been excited by violent material... I'm just not interested in it.

Ralvek 07-24-2003 06:26 PM

Most people are misled by the term pornography. What most people think is porn is actually erotica. Things like Playboy are erotica, while midgets eating poo while sucking wang is porn....

Pornography is bad.We all should be spanked by Gauge in a nurses uniform.

hobo 07-24-2003 07:02 PM

Could someone tell me what s/m is? I've seen many references to it before but I never did find out what it means.

Reikes 07-24-2003 07:12 PM

There are levels of porn, but it is more like what are you open to... For me at the start of looking at porn, anything normal was fine, then anything semi-kinky, and now nothing seems kinky anymore at all.

s/m is sadism/masochism i.e., getting sexual pleasure from giving pain/or receiving pain.

FYI, BDSM is a combination of the terms Bondage/Dominance, Discipline/Submission, and Sadism/Masochism

Thanks for helping to clear that up!

no, you're wrong. I've been looking at porn a long time, maybe 20 years now... and I've found that panties are sexier than nude. Take that to mean what ever you want, but I'm just saying your idea of escalating porn is misinformed. I'm not ever going to get sick of looking at a playboy centerfold!

Da-Gimp 07-25-2003 02:13 AM

There are definitely levels, when the speculum comes out is when I usually get out of dodge.

I absolutely think that there are levels. Actually, I think that I the analogy of streets and roads better. Different ones lead to different places at different speeds. Some are the safe cul-de-sacs of the Sears Catalog, and others are the superhighways of Playboy, Penthouse, etc. There are even some illegal street races with kiddie porn, bestiality, etc.

The reason that I like this analogy is that you get used to certain "speeds" of porn, just like you get used to driving a certain speed. Just like when you come off the highway into a 35 MPH zone, going from, say, Hustler to Maxim is going to be very noticable. And just like there are some people that stop at the top of the on ramp and watch all the traffic go by, there are going to be folks that look at the covers of the magazines at the Gas-N-Sip and never go any further. And of course the Ted Bundy's of the world who lead the police on a high-speed chase.

yournamehere 07-25-2003 12:32 PM

Before you can define different levels of porn , you must first define porn itself.
Is the Sears Catalog porn? I think not.
Is Playboy porn?. To me - no.
Penthouse? Again, to me - no.
Hustler? Tasteless, maybe - but porn? meh.
Well then - where does "porn" start? Suggested sex acts? Dildo insertions? Penis insertions?

It's all relative - I don't think porn has a ratcheting effect - i. e. you only keep getting "more into it". It's nice to enjoy something different for awhile, but "different" doesn't necessarily mean "more hardcore." A lot of times, I get tired of hardcore and switch to just looking at models and enjoying the female form. Maybe the next day I'll be into blowjob photo sets again. Who knows?

Think about it - sometimes the most innocent thing will turn you on. Hey - if I'm an hour into looking at facial movies, the observance of a single nipple doesn't do much for me. But if I'm at the grocery store an hour later and the lady next to me reaches down on the low shelf for something and shows me her wares, well - that's altogether different, isn't it? Stimulation is relevant to your surroundings and expectations at the time. A girl flashing her tits 45 minutes into a "Girls Gone Wild" video is nowhere nearly as exciting as if the girl at Blockbusters flashes you on your next rental, right?

monty121052 07-25-2003 05:05 PM

How can beautiful women getting banged by a good looking guy be called porn? Not in my eyes.

Gorgo 07-25-2003 05:26 PM

There are definitely levels of porn.
That's why there are X, XX and XXX as adult movie ratings.

X= Softcore, nothing gross or animalistic
XX= Mediumcore, normal sex with some closeups
XXX=Hardcore, almost anything goes, anal, oral, bsdm, beast, golden

Playboy = X
Penthouse = XX
Hustler = XXX

As for me, past Penthouse is too far, I don't like to see Humans having sex at the same levels as barnyard animals.

Call me crazy, but naked or nearly naked good looking women are timeless. I will never get tired of viewing naked beautiful girls in pictures or in person.

obediah 07-26-2003 10:34 AM

I've been looking at porn in one form or another for 15 years. My tastes and interests haven't changed much or degenerated. Sure, I've found new things that I liked, but I've found more things that I didn't like...gagging, abuse, child porn, gay porn (I'm loathe to include gay here, because everything else is deviant. I only include it because it doesn't turn my crank).

wiseguy1100 07-26-2003 11:07 AM

i agree - I think there are different levels of porn, but I do not think that the levels will be the same for everyone.

collide 08-19-2003 09:03 PM

I tend to think of it as a train wreck, and not so much as "levels" of porn. Once you get exposed to the more taboo forms of sexuality it just becomes one of those things that you look at to appease whatever morbid curiousity that you may have with it. You don't necessary need to be sexually aroused by it, or even agree with it or enjoy it. I doubt than many of us would even try the more extreme forms of porn/scat/smut. Thinking about it is one thing, but actually doing it is another.

kel 08-19-2003 09:34 PM

I am pretty confident I consume a well above "normal" (such as there is a normal amount of p0rn, I go through gigabytes of video and pictures daily, aroudn 2...) amount of porn. I don't feel the need to move onto the next level. My taste has changed drastically over time... first it was anal sex, then it was cumonherface.com (great orgies along with the moneyshot... careful, the site can be offensive) and now it's back to softcore cute girls like suicidegirls... all going hand in hand with a satisfying sex life... I don't really see bondage as another level... it's just plain not my cup of tea... neither is scat... I hate japanese porn because they abuse the women... it's a major turnoff, scat is even worse...

The_Dude 08-20-2003 06:08 AM

there was a law n order on last night that was kinda about this. their shrink was talkn about how people advance on their porno levels.

anyway, i dont think porn can make me do something i wouldnt normally do (like rape somebody like the guy on law and order did cuz he looked at porn).

i guess it's a matter of self control.

^dude 08-20-2003 06:56 AM

I definitely think people start with maybe topless stuff, then movie into softcore, then hardcore. But i think alot of people, me included, won't go much further than hardcore (ie. bondage etc).

GuttersnipeXL 08-20-2003 08:11 AM

Softcore porn is a gateway drug!.....Ha....I've been checkin out porn since the days of old, and I still look at pretty much the same stuff...women's behinds. I love it, I don't need anything else besides that...I don't need to graduate to anything else.

Kaos 08-20-2003 11:41 AM

I thought there was only 2 "levels" of porn: Softcore and Hardcore.

All the other stuff (anal, bondage, etc.) was just categories of hardcore porn.

I slightly disagree. I do think there are "levels" of porn and I think they've all been covered here, but I think you'll find that not all levels appeal to all people and that's the big distinction.

For instance, if I get bored with "regular" porn movies, I have the option of going to the next level, let's say bondage. That stuff really doesn't turn me on so now what do I do? I don't look at porn for awile or pick up a copy of Playboy or something.

My point is, I think people only go to the "next" level if that happens to appeal to them, it's not some uncontrollable force.

As far as Ted Bundy, he was damaged from day 1, the fact that he was a serial killer AND looked at porn is only incidental.

Fifteen Short 08-20-2003 01:07 PM

I have looked at porn for many many years. And yet, I look at intercourse. But I still very much so enjoy softcore stuff. Ive seen a lot, and intercouse is pretty much where Im staying as far as Ive seen. It doesnt seem to graduate that much...

jbrooks544 08-20-2003 04:43 PM

If you have never seen porn before then a victoria's secret or playboy will get you goin'. Once you discover sex and let out the horndog side of yourself then you might advance to higher levels of fantasy and stimulation. If you have never seen a pussy before in real life then soft stuff is really gonna spin ya. If you have been f-ing and sucking and playing with women for years then you want to keep it interesting and try new things. Porno is the same. It would be pretty boring to just do the same old things sexually and fatasy wise your WHOLE LIFE, wouldn't it? Humans like new and interesting things. Males always need something "new" sexually. Novelty is somewhat of a requirement for men sexually. "different levels" of porn can satisfy this need for novelty. Instead of cheating on your wife to get new pussy you can look at a dildo or bodage or fisting photo set or video, or whatever gets you there, instead. I think it is GREAT! If you are lucky, you can bring your partner along with you and keep you REAL sex life new and fresh and wild. Porn can do all of this. Forget about the guilt or thinking it is "bad" or anythng. I've been into porn for decades and I don't think I have seen anyone getting hurt against their will or anything "bad". Levels? sure, but levels are good...

MichaelFarker 08-20-2003 11:18 PM

I believe that some porn is more societally acceptable. It seems to me that the more you care about your own sexual pleasure and the less you take time to really love and be loved, the more likely you are to indulge in porn that society rejects. So if someone lives for porn, they'll get more kinky.
On the other hand, I don't know how you'd set strict levels. What feels daring and fun to one person is boring or nightmarish to another.

Raw Kuts 08-20-2003 11:23 PM

I wish I was desensitized. I watch normal, and funky porn, but I still get aroused at the sight of a mildly attractive woman in anything as revealing as a sweatshirt two sizes too big for her.
Damned hormones, go away, shoo, shoo.
