I just wonder if it's something with the culture that allows some of these inventions to be created/sold, or if maybe they are created more to showcase some sort of technology for a more advanced technology (i.e. those cool robots that they are always working on).

Then again there is a market (however small) for just about anything that can be bought (just look at ebay).
