I think it's in the best interest of Canadians to have a debate about this. This mission has been going on long enough, and so a backroom deal between the Tories and the Liberals would be disrespectful of the troops and Canadians who have stock in what we're doing in Afghanistan.

That said, this could also be the perfect opportunity to see a shift in stance of the Canadian military back to our traditional role: peacekeepers, rebuilders, and security.

At the very least, combat operations must end, but I think parliament should have a say in the shape the new role will take. I don't think combat training in a war zone is what most Canadians have in mind when we think of the function of our military abroad.

It's disheartening to hear that your prime minister has as little regard for what the people think as some of our leadership have. I've always viewed Canada as more civilized than the U.S.

Although we do have several fail-safes that will dissolve the government, it's important to remember that the Prime Minister has more power over Canada than the President does over the United States.

If there is one thing Layton is good for, it's "I'm angry and I'm not going to take it."

Between him and the NDP, it's the kind of thing Canadian politics needs—a dissenting voice representing a subset of the Canadian public.

Yeah, it's kind of a murky time in Canadian politics. I guess that's why Harper has been so bold. This is by far the longest running minority in history. No one wants an election right now.

I could have easily done without the one we had a couple week's ago...still and all, discrimination is more politically incorrect than recriminations are. It seems even morons understand that. I want no more troops of any stripe to die - almost all the folks I talk to, including a lot of strangers, feel the same - but it's not going to not happen while our fearless leaders feel different. (&, yes, I left off the 'ly' on purpose.)

It's time to get the fuck out of that hell-hole.

I just don't see any good coming out of it frankly, just a continued loss of life.


The only way they should be keeping guys there (even as trainers) is if the soldiers themselves volunteer to go. I don't think that they should be sending any more soldier there.
