His magazine was a hot alternative "mainstream" skin magazine to Playboy - a lot sleazier and with cartoons that don't bear the test of time very well. I remember the women usually were extremely lovely, even if they sometimes weren't the kind of girl you'd bring home to meet mother. Not to mention Mr. Guccione was quite happy to be showcasing the beautiful B cups out there. I did take issue with his fuzzy vaseline-coated-lens photo shoots - those were usually a pretty crappy waste of ink and paper even if the Pet of the Year was always a total fox. But he did it his way, lived it large, and was willing to put his wealth back into his magazine when she started to need life support.

RIP Mr. Guccione.

I always preferred Penthouse to Playboy back in the day when they were pretty much the only choices of skin mags (without driving to a sleazy part of town to find a porn store). I always thought the girls were much prettier, and I thought it pretentious and hypocritical of Playboy to not go pink like all the other girlie magazines in the early 70s.

Although a relic of a past age, Bob Guccione was a true pioneer; his passing is sad.

I am sooooooo sad. He was responsible for my sexual being.....RIP bob

Dear Mr Guccione,
You are responsible for my bravery.
After seeing your magazine, I used a make-up compact mirror
to thoroughly check out what my nether regions looked like.

If you're into hauntings & carrying around ponderous (gold) chains,
feel free to lose one or two at my place.
That stuff's up to 1200 an ounce, I hear.

Bye for now,
ring.

Best. Eulogy. Ever.

Thanks, ring.

Bob, you managed to fuck up "Caligula", but otherwise I like most of your contributions to the media world. Which weren't always limited to porn. Thanks.

I miss Omni Magazine too. Please don't focus everything on the naked ladies.

That said, Penthouse Forum was my porn of choice as a youth.

Tully Mars 10-22-2010 06:21 PM

The chicks were hot but "Dear Penthouse Forum" thanks for making my young mind race and expand all at once.

If a movie is made about the birth of this magazine, I'm there.

There was quite the furor when it was discovered that the September 1984 issue of Guccione's Penthouse had (besides suggestive lesbian photos of Miss America) nude pics of porn superstar Traci Lords, who had been just fifteen years old when the pictures were taken, sixteen when they were published. The Penthouse spread helped launch her spectacular underage porn career, (over one hundred films before she was eighteen) which was aborted a couple of years later in 1986 when her ruse was discovered.

My best friend and I used to go to the local porn store on our girls' nights, where they have bundles of issues of magazines for purchase; we'd look for the bundles with Penthouse Letters in them. We'd let her boyfriend have the Playboy in the pack; all we wanted was the Penthouse Letters.

RIP, Mr. Guccione.

...he was a formative part of my outlook.

God bless his soul.

That magazine was fun back in the late seventies-early eighties.
It was hefty, too. I moved too many times to keep them all.
I would enjoy perusing through them again.

Omni mag was good...........but Variations was better.......
