Poland legalizes castration ...

A Polish law that can force some rapists and paedophiles to undergo chemical castration has come into effect.

The legislation, passed by Polish MPs last September, applies to men who rape children or immediate family members.

The procedure has been tried elsewhere, but usually on a voluntary basis.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk proposed the measures after a series of high-profile paedophilia cases last year.

Under the law, prisoners would be forced on their release to take drugs to reduce their sex drive, but courts are required to consider the opinions of psychiatrists before ordering it.

According to Polish politicians, the country now has the toughest legislation towards paedophiles in Europe.
It is an interesting idea that people talk about doing to rapists / pedophiles. The question is in a lot of cases of pedophiles they think they are helping the child, there have been cases of elderly pedophiles using fingers or other items to help 'educate' as they call it the children. But it does remove the weapon of choice and would be a huge deterrent. Personally for me if you can prove 100% beyond a doubt, they should just be killed bullet to the head, but since that is unlikely to happen, I think this is potentially dangerous since people and courts make mistakes, but potentially the best deterrent.

Just make sure you do not get wrongly convicted in Poland, and remember age of consent is 15 there.

I'm pretty sure that has been offered as a "treatment" here in the States.

Here's a story about it in Florida. There was some controversy surrounding this in Michigan but I don't recall the details. It is only effective as long as the injections continue. Once stopped, everything returns to normal.

While I can see the benefit of using drugs to treat psychological disorders, there are ethical problems regarding their forced use. For example, I'm assuming there aren't other options, such as an elective residency in a institution for long-term psych treatments or whatever. I'm sure that would get expensive, however. This is a difficult issue.

It's possible to correct a rapist/pedophile's mentality. You're either a rapist or you're not, no switching back and forth. I'm feeling a little lazy to look up stats, but I'm sure a large percent of rapists have struck more than once.

Who wants to get castrated? No one. This is a great deterent and I think it will work very well if applied in the right way.

I thought they were talking about cutting or chemically burning it off. Now that would be a deterrent...

I was a little iffy about calling it castration, because my definition would be total removal, not medicine making you less horny. Since the article and everyone else is calling it castration, I will too.

Yeah, a permanent deterrent.

i think repeat offenders - be they rapists or pedophiles - should be castrated. i'd think it'd be pretty hard to get wrongly convicted twice. by the second guilty verdict, it's off with the smoothspot

If I recall correctly from my days of slinging pills, I believe the meds they put the pervs on is Depo Provera. Kills their sex drive.

Makes ya wonder why they're surprised when women on the pill have no desire for bumping uglies.

...

I'm all for physical castration of rapists / pedos. From the few articles I've read on the topic, recidivism is outta control... a sure thing.

I believe that once someone violates the rights of another person in such a way that they've lost their right to reproduce.

It isn't like we're running out of people able to reproduce. Let's start fixing the molester problem by nipping it in the nutsack.

Huh. Wouldn't Chemical Sex Drive Reduction (or some other snazzy term a lawyer can think up) work better here? I hear castration and I'm thinking genitalia getting hacked off. Not, a sex-drive inhibiting pill.

Plan9 10-07-2010 11:05 PM

Yeah, I agree. PCin' up the term for the program would make it easier to swallow for all the sensitive types out there.

ASU2003 10-08-2010 12:07 AM

So, are they basically giving them estrogen?

Plan9 10-08-2010 12:14 AM

Yeah, it'd be cheaper to make them watch soap operas and wear pastels... but that would be cruel and unusual.

Baraka_Guru 10-08-2010 03:57 AM

I think there are more health problems related to physical castration than with chemical castration. It would cause more problems that I think would cost more in the long run. Either method seems to be equally effective. But I'm seeing different numbers regarding recidivism...but rates as low as 2%.

I wonder if there's a female method.

Anyway, this still seems to treat the symptoms and not the problem. I guess whatever stops them from re-offending is a start. This seems to be relatively humane (the chemical method, that is).

I was referring to untreated.

For chemical castration? It's called Yaz or Mirena. *rimshot*

Yeah, supposedly it decreases their sex drive to that of someone who enjoys Tonka trucks and fruit snacks.
