How much data storage do you have?

I was just about to buy another 1.5Tb drive and it got me thinking just how much storage I actually have in my house.

2 x 1.5Tb HD
3 x 1.0Tb HD
3 x 500Gb HD
3 x 250Gb HD
1 x 200Gb HD
2 x 150Gb HD
2 x 128Gb SSD
2 x 80Gb HD
5 x 40Gb HD
2 x 30Gb HD
2 x 4Gb SDHC
4 x 2Gb SDHC
2 x 4Gb USB drives
1 x 2Gb USB drive
1 x 1Gb USB drive
1 x 160Gb iPod
1 x 80Gb iPod

I have a box full of drives rated in the MB that I do not use but aren't being thrown away.

I have approximately 9.5TB of data storage in my home currently.

Jaysus, Cyn....I'm not even going to bother ask what you do with that much storage.

I have a total of 1.1 TB, which includes a Dell desktop PC, a Macbook, an Apple Time Capsule, a small USB key drive, and an iPod Touch.

I didn't think to include my iPod. That's another 30GB for me, and 16GB for my SO.

I also forgot about the 4GB HD in my netbook. Tiny, yes, but with a USB drive/data storage on campus/online it was all I needed.

Most of it is video, one need lots of storage to do video editing. So while 1/2 of that is Skogafoss' video editing, mine is mostly archived Tivo shows and other digitized content.

It gets worse as I get blu-ray rips, which can be 22Gb for 1 single 1080p movie.

Right now I am seriouly under what I need in terms of storage but buying hard drives is very low on my list of shit to buy.

6 x 250gb
1 x 200gb
1 x 1tb
2 x 80gb
1 x 160gb
1 x 16gb
1 x 2gb

I need like.... 4 x that. I'd love one of those hot swapable mini HDD servers that run on esata. Plus the HDDs to go with it.

That I'm aware of...

my 150G desktop
250G Seagate Backup
2MB thumb drive
2G camera memory card
512 MB camera memory card (back up)
16G iPhone 3GS
60G laptop

I don't know how much is on the PS3 or S's enormously huge gaming PC + Media Server or his MacBook. I think he's got 2 250G Seagates, 4 thumb drives, a 16G iPhone 3GS, and we have random iPods of around 30G total, I think. Plus my work laptop that has around 28G available to me... since I'm not an administrator, it won't let me see the total... storage nazis.

Lets see;

about 900g on my laptop
a 60g ipod <-- really need a bigger one though
2 4g memory stick things
and I think my PS3 has around 60g (might be wrong about that)
No idea what my phone storage is

I think that's about it, but other then music I don't really need much space for storage. Actually the laptop is way more then I need but when my old Dell studio bit the dust (which I think was around 500-600g) Dell sent me this Alienware monstrosity I'm currently using as a replacement. Its a great computer but its ugly as sin, stupidly heavy and is way more then I really need out of a laptop.

I'm seriously shocked at people having more than 2 or 3 TB at home. But 8 TB?

I have, at minimum:
7 x 750gb
2 x 1.5 tb
3 x 500gb
2 x 500gb (external)
1 x 320gb (external)
1 x 120gb (2.5" external)
1 x 80gb (2.5" external)
2 x 8 gb (thumbdrive)
2 x 16gb (CF)
2 x 8 gb (Micro SD)
2 x 2gb (thumbdrive)

That's not including misc internal harddrives in three laptops and the wife's imac, as well as a stack of older hard drives all under 100gb, and the 36gb SCSI drives in my processing server.

All told, probably right around 12TB.

And I feel substantially less nerdy after reading this thread.

I forgot I had moved two of the 500's into external shells, but this is all I could rustle up at the moment. You can't see very well, but in front of the UPS is a bunch of thumb drives and a 2.5" drive out of an old laptop.

It is largely due to photos and videos. A 15 megapixel photo from my digital camera is 25-30MB if you consider the RAW+JPEG files combined. An hour of 720p video is about 1-1.5GB.

Plus, the actual effective space is much less given that things like flash drives and media card generally stay vacant for day-to-day use. On top of that, one of the 1.5TB drives is serving as a backup for a pair of 750GB drives in RAID.

I have turned up some way old files that I have started to delete, but some of those old games and pictures are just too awesome to let go!

Some of these...Wow. Seriously, Wow.

1 x 80gb HD
1 x 40Gb HD
2 x 2gb Thumb Drives
2 x 2gb SD

=128gb

The hard drives are in the same computer and each run a different OS (Ubuntu, XP) - I only boot one at a time. I use my burner for excess storage. As soon as I get to 5 gigs of something (mostly photos) they get burned in triplicate. One copy on the desk for use, one copy in a box under the desk for storage and one copy in a hard plastic lock box in the basement. I figure it's dark and extremely stable in terms of temp/humidity.

I have about 1.25TB online plus several hundred GB of backup to CD and DVD. Also 32GB compact flash for my cameras.

I've kept burned CD's in boxes under my desk and out of direct light and still had them fail, especially a cheap brand I bought that started to fail almost immediately. Anything I burned about 10 years ago has a good chance of being unreadable now.

I found this media which is a little expensive but which is supposed to last for a long time if not mistreated.

I guess my thing is that I'm still set firmly in the world of books, and I view the Internet as a broadcast medium—generally.

Most of my storage is for small collections of photos/wallpapers, music, and production/work files.

Yeah, I just don't download much in general. I never download movies, 'cause I rarely watch them more than once; I've only got about 3 albums worth of tunes on the old hard drive.

I got about a thousand pinup girl pics, though.

Most of 'em I keep on a image host.

Since this is a storage topic, what do you guys do to protect your data? Right now, I have plenty of free space to backup my important things but in the event of a fire or break in, I have no protection. I used to think that a fire safe might work but it would get hot enough to seriously damage the stuff.

I was thinking the only way to really be safe would be to buy a separate set of HDDs and store them in a safe place away from home and update them every few months. Is there anything that really works better if you are talking about backing up 2TB+ of data?

For family photos, everything historical is backed up on an external drive at four other family member's locations, and everything new is uploaded to Picasa.

For music, I have enlisted two of my friends to be my off-site backups---they bought 2tb drives that I regularly borrow and refresh as I get additional content, on the condition that they are not allowed to delete any of it.

Movies/TV, I don't care enough about to back up other than internally to the server so I'm safe from a drive failure. In case of fire/theft, I'm not going to care that I have to go out and reacquire "The Wire" and Pineapple Express.

Problem with the online backups is the resource usage. My mom uses carbonite and her system is noticably slower than my dad's and he has the exact same system. I built both systems at the same time, identical components and near identical program load.

also, I have:
pc
150gig
1tb
1tb
1tb external

macbook
250gig

about 20 assorted drives not in use totaling about 3 tb

most of my space is tv shows.

I've trusted orbitfiles for a while now, and its quite affordable.
(the only rub is I kept two of my accounts as free there, and I let them lapse in terms of "continuity", and subsequently found all of my files were deleted 45 days later. They used to give 30 days, plus a 60-day probationary period to log back in to show you still operate the account, but I've got a lot on my plate, and I forgot, by just two measly days. )

I'd also highly recommend Divshare.
