Newark, Murder free

For one month anyway...

For those who haven’t heard, the state of New Jersey catches a lot of flack. Our guidos pump their fists in Belmar, Seaside Heights, and across MTV’s airwaves. The oil refineries and shipping ports plastered around our main airport and highway make for some great eye-sores for visitors passing through. The Garden State also claims home to three of the most dangerous cities in America: Newark, Trenton, and Camden. Yea, we’re proud of that too.

Of those three cities, Newark, is very publicly undergoing a citywide revitalization under the leadership of Mayor Cory Booker. The state’s largest city recently completed a feat of mind-boggling proportions: zero murders in the month of March. If you’re not familiar with Newark’s violence, their recent lack of a body count is similar to Los Angeles going a month without rush hour traffic. This shit never happens. In fact it’s been 44 years since the last time Newark has had a murder free month. Almost half a century has gone by since the last time this had occurred, exactly two of my lifetimes.

Police Director Garry McCarthy credits the heavy sweeps on the city’s most notorious drugs rings, which included a six-month case that resulted in 150 arrests. In fact there were only eight shootings in the entire month of March, compared to 11 this time last year, which had resulted in three deaths. The Newark crime rate has also dropped 13 percent comparison to the first quarter of last year.

Now there must be some degree of luck involved with this murder-less phenomenon. Maybe the torrential rain that graced the NJ last month played a role. Who wants to go on a murderous rampage in the rain? It’s difficult to look tough while wearing a poncho, and it’s harder to aim your gat while holding your umbrella. Hopefully the current beautiful April weather will warm the hearts of gang-bangers everywhere to leave the semi-automatics hidden under the floorboards.

Interesting news. Newark goes a whole month without killing anyone. That's gotta make an great tourism tag line "Come to Newark, we had an entire month where we didn't kill anyone."

Wouldn't it be nice if murders were rare? Instead it's news when none happen.

hmmmmm, New Jersey....Isn't that the state where the 15 year old girl sold her 7 year old sister for sex?

Indeed it is. They should just convert the whole state into a bomb testing site.

I remember that story and thinking, who in the hell finds a 7 year old hot?

But of course she was raped, and that's about power and hatred and anger.

I'm happy Newark is pleased with its toxic avenging troma in real life self. I will never go there again. There are some nice people there, who mistakenly believe they are happy. The 7 year old thing happened in Trenton, home to Princeton. This shows once again that most Ivy league schools are located in Shitville. New Haven is a crime mecca, Cambridge has Irish hooligans (were they not Irish I would call them gangs), Penn is attached to the ass of Philly, Dartmouth is some place I've never heard of, and Ithaca is.... well Ithaca is swell.

Trenton is home to Princeton? Princeton is in Princeton, NJ.

I always think in media markets, ingrained from years in the industry. Princeton's WPRB is in the Trenton market.

Reminds me of here in Baltimore. Of course, Baltimore will only go a month without a murder when there's no one left to kill, so it would go unreported.

From what I understand, Hanover is a pretty nice place. Granted, I don't know much about it, and what I do know is based off of conversations with a Dartmouth professor I know. Still, looking it up on Wikipedia seems to confirm my impression:

In 2007, CNN and Money magazine rated Hanover the second best place to live in America.
Anyway, it's nice that Newark went a month without a murder, though I agree it's still not exactly the best PR. I'm not sure if it's possible for New Jersey to get good PR though.

Every single part of nj that I have gone through was, definitely, a shithole- urban blighty poor city planning, not a clue what it is, but its almost palpable- that said, when we stopped at a small pizza place, the people were quite nice, and the food great- so we should spare that place at least from any bomb tests.... it was nice....

How much money did she get for selling her sister?

Looking for something else I found info but not the answer.
