Non-payment of GI bill

Any one who is Ex-military trying to pull there GI-bill this year and has yet to receive payment you NEED to check this out.

The VA has recognized they cannot keep up with GI bill claims and are issuing emergency funds of up to $3000 to vets to pay for school. go to the VA website for more info.

Good post, though from what my financial aid office is telling me, vets have to drive their happy asses (on their own dime) to a VA regional center to maybe get a check. Or they may just get some peice of paper that then then have to take back and submit to their financial aid office, who then sends it back to the VA regional office for approval. Nobody seems to know, including the fucktards at the GI Bill help line - provided youre lucky enough to get someone to answer the phone.

Oh, and it has to be during the normal business week....meaning that you're missing a full day of classes.

I submitted my paperwork for the Chap 33 GI Bill in June and I still haven't received shit. I refuse to miss a day of school to drive to the nearest VA regional office (4 hours away, round trip) on my own dime to get the fucking benefits that I have decidedly earned even though I desperately need that money. Instead, I have to take out loans and count my change jar to pay for groceries and my power bill.

Fuck the VA.

Don't be frustrated, Walt. It's the government. It could be worse. You could still be getting $1400 a month. This new GI Bill $$ upgrade is going to be rather nice.

Submitted my Chapter 33 the same time you did. Granted, I've got a metric shit-ton of savings because I did nothing with my life for four years except fill sand bags.

...

And I don't want any bullshit emergency funds... I want the $4k first paycheck (tuition, rent, $1k allowance) plus the rest of the money I'm due in monthly payments.

I've been Chapter 30 since March 2007. I don't know why its so hard to transfer us Chapter 30 guys over. I suppose it's because its veterans and not a group that has a voice... like bilingual gay minority amputees.

Yeah, another reason I'm politely declining the emergency fund is it just gives the VA another chance to fuck up my paperwork and short me a years tuition. I dont want special help/treatment. I just want what I am owed.

I started receiving my Chap 30 in the fall of last year! I havent changed addresses or schools since. I still maintain the same checking account. Nothing has changed, all of my information is still on file somewhere in the VA. It shouldnt be taking this fucking long.

Dude. You and I both know that the support doesn't go beyond campaign speeches and "support the troops" bumper stickers.

I'm not allowed to be a pessimist anymore according to AR 670-1. It's unbecoming of the uniform or those who still have them piled in their garage.

Dude. Youre missing the boat here. The frat boys, hippies and the skater kids will pay top dollar for "slightly worn" BDU's. Ironically wearing a uniform is totally unique and nonconformist. Im surprised you didnt know that.

Nobody seems to dig the ACU's, though.

Yeah, turns out nobody will buy my starched BDUs, stained DCUs, or faded ACUs.

Velcro sucks. That's why nobody likes ACUs. Buttons, while perfect, weren't tacticool.

...

Is it me or does the GI Bill site's "ask a question" feature seem like the Frustrate-A-Tron 4000? The whole site is garbage. The questions, while A = B are still leaving me clueless. And that other indy help site is just as bad. Also: How do you know if anybody got any paperwork at any time? My university says they have everything they need... but the endless chasm that is the VA isn't even sending back an echo to me yet. My Help Line experience has been the same.

You can call the VA @ 1-888-GI BILL 1 and hope you get through to a caseworker. Best bet is to start calling at 0759 EST. The VA offically opens for business at 0800 EST and their phone lines are immediately flooded for the rest of the day. Or you should be able to talk to you financial aid office. They should be able to tell you if anyone at your school has received benefits yet. I asked my financial aid guys yesterday. Only the guys that volunteered for the pilot program (all 4 of them) have been paid.

After you submitted your initial VONAPP application, did you receive something in the mail around August that said your application has been approved and that you needed to submit said paper to your financial aid office? If so, the government just gave your school an IOU for your tuition....meaning your school has to cut you some slack about late tuition payments, etc. It also means your BAH is coming...eventually.

---------- Post added at 01:33 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:30 AM ----------

Oh, and I called the VA yesterday. They said that my paperwork that I submitted in June wasn't received until 31 Aug. They claim that SOP stipulates that everyone be paid within 6 weeks of submitting their paperwork. So I (and probably you) should get paid sometime around mid-late Oct.

Wait... is it all still lump sum or do they dole out separate WAVE payments for "tuition," "BAH," "Yearly $1k for books and kegs" ?

I was under the impression that the only thing to change was the amount paid when I click authorize.

The VA lady told me that the whole monthly verification thing on WAVE is over and done with once you get hooked up with the Chap 33. You should be getting paid monthly, lump sum, by direct deposit.

Fuck that, I want my button.

...

I heard the "Late October = November" time frame thing from some navy dude in my privacy law class. He's just as lost as everybody else.

I don't trust weenie squids, but it seems like that would be an appropriate gummint fuck-up-the-TOT buffer. They first said, what? September? We got November. That seems about right given the fact that they were surprised that anybody would be interested in doubling their monthly payments so they could move outta mom's basement while still slamming college full time. No clue as to why they would have expected such a program to be so popular.

This is why I didn't swap over to the new GI bill - every time those clowns over at the VA have cause to pull my file from the cabinet, they forget to change what they were going to, change something completely irrelevant, then drop the damn thing behind the copier for 2 months.

Luckily, I'm only taking 1 more class to finish up my associates, then I'm working full time for a while. Good luck guys.

OK. i Just got back from driving to milwalkee (my regional center) and this is how it went down.

I walked in about 8:30 got through security by 8:32. asked where to go and was pointed around the corner.. i was IMMEDIATLEY greeted and shown to a guy at a table.

i introduced my self and he asked me to fill out a 3 line form ( name address and SSN) then he asked for my school schedule. he looked at it said "OK, very good jason. Did you want the full amount of $3000" i said "yes that would be nice" he then reached behind him and grab a blank US bank check filled out my name and the amount of $3000 and signed it.. had me sign a form saying i received it and handed me a letter to give to the bank explaning why there was a hand written $3000 check. he then shook my hand and said " have a nice day"

8:40 i walked out $3000 richer.

Assume your pulling chapter 33
they way that it works is Say you started school in september and BAH for your schools zip code is 1000 . that means the VA is 2 months behind on your payments(for September and October). you take the full 3000. You mostlikly will not see any money from the VA untill december because they owed you $2000 , then you took a $3000 advance. so you now owe them $1000 a month worth of BAH. december 1st you shoudl receive your first Direct deposit for $1000

Now keep in mind that this is completely separate from your Book allowance and your tuition. So once the VA processes your claim they will pay your school for your tuition ( you school will reimburse you i assume you have already paied it out of pocket) and you will receive your $47.63 ( i think) per credit hour for your book allowance.

any questions i will be on the video chat in a min.

---------- Post added at 04:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:10 PM ----------

OHH also.. you can request you check online.. will take ~6days to get it. if you can make the trip to the VA they are open Saturday and Monday dealing out checks.

Impatience'd! I still haven't seen a dime yet. Anybody else? Any new and amazing stories about frustrating phone calls?

Can't see myself fucking up the process even more (potentially) by getting an Emergency Check or whatever. Do not want.

I guess the biggest thing for me is that I can't get through on the phone, I don't know if my paperwork made it, and I don't want to submit another claim if my paperwork made it but hasn't been processed yet. This is almost as awesome as doing a divorce in country while out on the road 20+ days/month.

I mean, I'm not really worried... yet... but it turns out the rent is due next year as much as this year and I'll need that $$$.

...

So many rumors... some disability'd Marine chick said something about being able to ride out Chapter 30 and switching to Chapter 33 for a year. Sheeeit, I'd totally do that and use the Chapter 33 to pay for my MPA or something. Too bad that smells like a steaming pile of T-rat boolsheet.

This isn't much, but a few days back I caught part of a local TV news story that said the VA had set-up a special office here to get immediate $3,000.00 payments out to vets waiting for their GI bill money.

Another way for veterans to beg for money:

If you were stoplossed, as I was in 2006, you're eligible for $500 a month for every month they kept you beyond your contract.

If you got extended a year, that's $6000. I'm a Total Sellout, so I'm going for it. Check it out: Retroactive Stop Loss Pay

Bump.

I got a letter from the VA a month ago telling me that I was overpaid by $198 last semester because I had to drop a class. No worries. I got online, payed my bill and received a letter in the mail telling me that everything was kosher, do not send any more payments. Got a letter today from the VA telling me that they had received my $198, and now I only owe them $2,801.34. The $ is to be paid ASAP or they will withhold my tuition assistance. They still haven't paid this semesters tuition and I'm starting to get angry letters from my University. What the fuck?

Of course I've been trying to call their "help" line literally every 5 minutes from 1200-1700 EST. The line was always busy. Called back at 1701 hrs and got a recorded message telling me that the office was now closed, try again tomorrow.

This is not the kind of shit that I want to be dealing with during midterm week. Fuck the VA and all of the incompetent twats who work there.

Shit, I'm sorry, bro. They're all over the place these days. The help line is just about useless. I call the university's VA dude to vent my frustrations.

I told you about my bullshit half-payment situation. They withheld a portion of my rent money for like 45 days and then lump sum'd me the next pay period this February. I have no idea why they would see it as acceptable to pay half of your rent check. Pfft, my landlord wouldn't take that as an excuse.

PM me if you need any help.
